Acting responsibly means, proving to be a reliable partner.

With its numerous compensation and substitution

measures, 50Hertz feels a certain degree of obligation

towards the common good. 486 compensation and

substitution measures are currently being planned and

implemented by 50Hertz. This will safeguard the

ecological balance and preserve natural spaces and

habitats.

Our approach is always close cooperation with com-

petent local partners. This opens up completely new

paths, with objectives that benefit everyone.

As a transmission system operator (TSO) in the heart of

Europe, 50Hertz is committed to the secure integration

of renewable energy sources, the development of the

European electricity market and the maintenance of a

high standard of supply security. We are responsible

for the management of the entire electrical system in

the areas of the federal states of Berlin, Brandenburg,

Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony,

Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. Our grid forms the

backbone for a secure electricity supply to more than

18 million people – 24 hours a day, seven days a week,

365 days a year.

We ensure the grid integration of some 38 per cent

of the installed wind-power capacity in Germany by

accepting the electricity into our grid and forwarding it to

the centres of consumption. Above and beyond that, we

are committed to the transparent and nondiscriminatory

planning of our responsibilities to society.

50Hertz

Locations

50Hertz is headquartered in Berlin. The heart of our busi-

ness is the Transmission Control Centre (TCC) in Neuen-

hagen bei Berlin. We maintain seven regional centres to

ensure optimal maintenance of our transmission system,

substations and switching stations in the federal states

of Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western

Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.

Core task

Our name reflects our program: 50Hertz (50 Hz) is the

target frequency for the electricity grid and thus forms

the basis for a reliable electricity supply. The core task

of each TSO is to permanently ensure the stability of

this grid frequency. We work together with our domestic

and foreign partners to maintain 50 Hz, the pulse of

Europe’s electricity supply. We also promote the devel-

opment of the electricity market, integrate renewable

energy sources securely into the grid and expand the

grid as needed.

Transparent and non-discriminatory op-eration is the rule at 50Hertz, complete-ly in line with the independence and neutrality of systems as required by the European Union. Since 2012, 50Hertz has been the only German TSO certified by the BNetzA [“Bundesnetzagentur”: Federal Network Agency] as a fully un-bundled system operator under property law. As a result, 50Hertz operates as an independent electricity system opera-tor and is part of the international Elia Group at the same time.

Company shareholders include the Belgian TSO Elia

System Operator NV/SA (Elia) with 60 percent and

infrastructure fund Global InfraCo S. à r. l., managed by

IFM Investors, with 40 percent.

Legal framework

As a transmission system operator, 50Hertz has the

task of “operating, maintaining and, as required,

optimising, enhancing and developing a secure, reliable

and efficient energy supply network in a non-discrim-

inatory manner” (§ 11 of the German Energy Industry

Act [EnWG]). 50Hertz’s social obligations are defined in

a wide range of legislative documents – laws, regula-

tions and directives at national and European level. The

central German regulations for transmission system

operators are laid down in:

Evolution of the installed capacity of EEGgenerating plants in the 50Hertz balancingzone

Trends in the EEG levy

Particulars of the nature and extent of the levy calcula-

tion under the EEG for 2010 through 2015, as well as

information on the forecast for the EEG levy for 2016,

can be found on the transmission system operator

website (netztransparenz.de) under the menu item EEG

levy and/or annual/medium-term forecasts.

Due to the negative EEG account balance in 2014,

the liquidity buffer and the account balance settle-

ment (account balance/retroactive receipt) are only

cited as a balance in 2015.

Good ideas are needed to ensure proper nature con-

servation during the grid expansion. Ideally, what

is economically necessary will be tied to a high benefit

for nature. One example is the construction of

transmission towers. These are excellently suited for

the installation of species-appropriate nesting aids

for birds.

Around 450 “homes” for birds have been installed on

50Hertz towers – securely mounted with fasteners

developed by 50Hertz.

The balancing zone of 50Hertz includes onshore wind

turbines with an installed capacity of around 13,589 MW.

This equates to round 38 per cent share in the total

installed wind capacity in Germany and a growth of

around 7.4 per cent compared to 2013. The connected

onshore wind turbines in the Baltic Sea have an installed

capacity of 48 MW.

13,90050Hertz transmission towers cover the grid area between the Baltic Sea coast and the Vogtland region. They have different forms depending on the location and voltage level and can be either a two-level “Donau” pylon, a three-level “barrel” pylon or a single-level pylon.

3,966GWh were traded by 50Hertz in 2014 in 590,549 trading ope-rations on the intraday market. The trend to-wards small tradable units continues.

Acting responsibly means, acting in harmony with nature.

The necessary expansion of the transmission grid

entails interventions in nature and the landscape.

50Hertz has a special responsibility here to keep these

interventions as small as possible. We are therefore

being careful to preserve nature and habitats through

extensive and careful planning, environmental

supervision of construction projects and numerous

compensation and substitution measures.

10,000kilometres is the length of the electricity transmis-sion system operated by 50Hertz between the Baltic Sea and the Thuringian For-est, between the Oder and the Harz mountain range.

Acting responsibly means, instilling trust with comprehensive information.

Reinforcing and expanding the electricity transmission

grid is integral to the successful implementation

of the energy revolution. Citizens in the regions have a

great need for information. For this reason 50Hertz

places great value on having an open and transparent

dialogue with the public in order to get them

involved early in the planning.

26350Hertz had to intervene in the grid on 263 days in 2014 due to the fact that the grid expansion is still progressing too slowly.
