From Your Pastor

Beloved in the Lord, What a wonderful novena we had to St. John Vianney! It was great to see everyone, and the procession last Sunday was marvelous! I have seen many graces coming to our parish during these days. As we continue on now, in these August days, the coming weekday Masses will present us with a number of great saints. Monday is the feast of St. Teresa Benedicta, better known as Edith Stein. Edith Stein was born of Jewish parents in 1891, but at age 14 she stopped believing in God. She said, ‘I consciously decided, of my own choice, to stop praying.’ Later, during her studies at the university, she happened to pick up the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila and found that she couldn’t put it down. Upon completing the book she said: ‘This is the truth!’ For her, that meant she had to change her life. Her faith grew, and she knew the Catholic Church was true. From there she began a spiritual journey leading to Baptism in 1922. Twelve years later, she became a Carmelite nun, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Before becoming a sister, she was a major force in German intellectual life. A protégé of the famous Edmund Husserl, she studied phenomenology and earned a doctorate in philosophy. Soon she was a university professor and appointed as a lecturer in Munich, but that ended when pressure came from the Nazis. She entered the Carmelites in 1933, in a monastery in the Netherlands. By 1940, the Nazis occupied that country as well. Now in the Netherlands the Bishops spoke out forcefully against Naziism, and as a consequence, the Nazis came down hard on Jews, including those who had become Catholic. And so, the knock finally came at the monastery door. The Nazi death knock. This brilliant professor, nun, and future saint, was transported by cattle train to Auschwitz. Teresa Benedicta and her sister Rosa, also a Catholic, died in the gas chamber in Auschwitz on August 9, 1942. She would be canonized a saint 56 years later. In her classic work, The Science of the Cross, she says, nothing has value except getting to heaven. To please God, in every detail of every action we do: this is to love God. If we seek the praise of others, or to become important, we make no progress in holiness. In fact, we owe God everything. She says: ‘God is most pleased by those works that demand more self-denial.’ Edith Stein followed Christ because she encountered the life of St. Teresa. How great it would be if our own saintly lives, could also lead others to follow Christ. Have a great week!

In Christ and Mary, Father Luke Winkelmann

Lesson 2: God and His Perfections

“I BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHER ALMIGHTY, CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH…”

Q 9. What do we mean when we say that God is self-existing?

Answer: When we say that God is self-existing we mean that He does not owe His existence to any other being.

(a.) God i0s the first and completely independent source of

all being. Every other being is given existence. God is His own existence; God is His own life, or He who is.

(b.) It is a manifest contradiction to hold that God, who is self-existent, could have been brought into being by anyone else.

Scripture: “I Am Who Am” (Exodus 3:14)

Meditation: taken from “The Imitation of Christ”

by Thomas A. Kempis Chapter 25 Paragraph 1

On the Fervent Amendment of Our Whole Life

1. Be alert and diligent in the service of God, thinking often why you were born and why you have left the world. Was it not that you should live only for God and become a spiritual person? Certainly it was. Therefore, set your heart on striving for perfection, for shortly you will be rewarded for all your labors and after that you will never experience sorrow or dread. Your labor will last but a short time and then you will receive everlasting rest and peace. If you are faithful and fervent in doing good, there is no doubt that God will be faithful and generous in His reward. Have a firm hope that you will attain the victory; but do not presume on this, for then there is danger of your becoming careless and proud.

Pro-Life Corner

“Although we may feel unsure how best to comfort those who mourn, we must stand with them in their time of

suffering. Miscarriage touch the lives of many people, yet all too often this tragedy remains unaddressed. This lack of response not only often leads to unresolved grief,

but also fails to clearly manifest our belief that each person, from conception onward, is precious and

unique.” USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities “Solace and Strength in the Sorrow of

Miscarriage”

Our daily spiritual adoption prayer: “Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.” Ven. Archbishop Fulton Sheen

______________ _____________

USCCB Word of Life:

“For those grieving after a miscarriage: May they be comforted by God’s everlasting love

and His presence amidst their sorrow; We pray to the Lord.”
