W hat an absolutely bizarre time we live in. We live in the midst of a pandem-

ic which has changed almost every aspect of our lives. We have wel-comed in a new Associate Pastor, whom God is going to use to do amazing things at this church. I, per-sonally, am thrilled with the passion I hear in his voice for God’s people. But then our playground burns, half of it destroyed. But then we saw peo-ple step up to find ways to rebuild and fundraise. But then people step on each other’s toes when it happens and arguments broke out.

Thankfully in our area, not too many have lost their jobs, but people have still lost jobs. We see people stepping up to help out in times of need, but then our Faribault Food Shelf closes.

One day we see articles and charts that COVID numbers are falling and people are surviving, but then a moment later we see the numbers rise; we see our own friends suffer with the disease; some of us have even lost friends to the disease.

The constant question in times like these, and really in all times, is what do we do? How should we act? What is God’s will? What does He want us to do?

In times like these, stick with what you know. This is why in church we have the same message every week—you are

loved by a God who has taken your place in death and risen from death to give you life. Your pastors, whether Pr. Tyler and myself or a guest, will always say the same thing. Jesus loves you, and He shows that love by giving His life for you so that you might be set free. Paul says it best in Romans 5:8, “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” We repeat this message over and over because, it’s what mat-ters most.

Then knowing that love, we then live. To live in this love means to study God’s Word and see how He express-

es His love to the world. He feeds and nourishes us by His love through people. He works His good and merciful will through evil things.

And in all of this we are able to adapt. We carry the cross as our symbol of victory and strive through challenges.

Our VBS, while being all virtual, will be used by God to proclaim His strength and love to many. Our livestreams are averaging at around a thousand peo-ple a weekend.

Children ages 3 through 6th grade are participating

from anywhere! We have some people from Iowa who

are watching! Registration is now closed, but we may

have extra craft supplies. Please contact Nancy Simon-

son if you have interested in VBS supplies at 507-210-

8486.

Our church services on August 1 at 5:30 p.m. and

August 2 at 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. will include our

theme: “Jesus’ Power Pulls Us Through – Trust Jesus!”

Currently we have 72 children enrolled and a report on

our VBS adventure will be given later in August.

W e are not sure what our Sunday School year for children will look like, so please keep us in your prayers. If you are willing to help by serving as a teacher/helper/presenter for the fall quarter, full-

or part-time, we welcome you. The Sunday School program uses a site rota-tion schedule so a teacher is only needed to lead small group activities for about 20 minutes. Others lead the story presentation and music. All materials are supplied. If you have a love for children, here is an opportunity to use your talents! Contact Nancy Simonson.

5:30PM WORSHIP SERVICES START UP AGAIN

PIES FOR SALE

B eginning August 1, the Saturday 5:30 p.m. worship services will resume. We will continue to practice social distancing of at least 6 feet and all who attend

in-person worship are asked to wear face masks. Please note that the 5:30 p.m. service will NOT be live streamed. Pastors Rieger and Tyler are going to stream Bible studies between services on Sunday mornings, beginning August 2 at 9:15 a.m. The first will be a 6-week study on Ephesians. Bible studies will be available on YouTube and Facebook.

Trinity Members:

O ur LWML (Women In Mission) has been asked for our congrega-tion’s help. The Faribault and Owatonna Sexual Assault Program (SANE) has a need for any size women’s new T-shirts, (neutral col-

ors and no graphics), sweat pants, underwear and socks.

The collection box is located in the narthex on the Information Center. Items will be distributed on August 15 to the centers, so please have your donations brought in by then.

T rinity Quilting Group stopped meeting in March this year when the restrictions on meeting went into effect because of the Corona Virus. Now that we can gather once again as long as we follow guidelines given

to us by the state of Minnesota, it is time to start quilting. All are invited to find your scissors and your needle and join the Trinity Quilters on Wednesday mornings at 9:00 a.m. We will begin meeting on August 5. Please wear a face mask, and we will be spread out on our usual work tables so that we are all working at a safe distance. It will be good to gather again and begin working on quilts. See you on August 5!

F rozen, ready-to-bake pies are for sale through the church office, Monday-Thursday, during the summer, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Cost is $10 a pie. There are many varieties available including apple,

Trinity Lutheran Church Lay Leadership Board Minutes

1. Opening devotions and prayer by Pastor Rieger. Devotions on John 3, followed by prayer.

2. Changes or additions to agenda: None

3. FLS Report Krystal Sevcik gave the report on the FLS finances and an update on the FLS issue concerning the interim adminis-

trator. There will be information in this Sunday’s bulletin and the Sunday announcements.

4. Sudanese Ministry by Rev. Reat Rev. Reat spoke on his past, present and future here in the US and the challenge he is facing in spreading the

Good News to his Sudanese congregations in Faribault, Albert Lea, Austin and Columbia Heights. Discussed the possibility of $5,000 going to Rev. Reat from Trinity to continue. 5. FOC report

a. We are meeting expenses and there was discussion on paying off the Building Fund. b. Parking lot re-sloping on the west side to 6th Avenue. Probable estimate is $12,000. Motion by Carl to approve the re-sloping of the parking lot. Seconded by Jim Boldt.

6. Senior Pastor’s Report a. Pastor Werner reported that he feels supported by everyone at Trinity, and he is eager to begin

working with groups and organizations. b. Pastor Rieger stated that the Sunday services with communion are going well. c. Confirmation planning is being done by Pastor Werner. d. Pastor Rieger is updating the Organizational Chart to create a clear discipleship path. e. The Stewardship Study Committee will be formed by Pastor Rieger.

7. Audit completed by Shari Schreck and Barb Beatty.

8. Policy manual review No policy review tasks needed for July according to schedule.

I hope all of you are doing well and keeping in good health. We all miss each other and I know I miss seeing you at church. A few more people than before are coming to

church services these days and as time goes on more and more will feel comfortable enough to come also. But it may be a long time before everything is back to normal. I wanted to catch up on the church financial situation. Thanks largely to online giving and the many of you who are still bringing in or mailing in your church envelopes, we are doing fairly well so far. April and May were very good months and along with reduced expenses during that period, we gained some ground. June wasn't as good, but we got by okay. God has answered our prayers and sent us our Associate Pastor. How great it will be to have dual pastor services again and to reduce Pastor Rieger's heavy load so things can get back to a normal level for him again. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that starting now, we're dealing with two salaries and bene-fits instead of one. So now our expenses rise considerably, there-fore we will need to have our con-tributions increase accordingly, by about 10 to 15%. One thing I've noticed in my years here is that when necessary, our congregation steps up and helps us resolve the issues. In this case, our members understand the meaning of good stewardship and do what they can to keep us solvent. That's why we haven't gone into serious debt in the last fifteen years. What property-based projects are ongoing this summer? The main ones have been: 1.) upgrading of our fire/burglary alarm system, 2.) the west parking lot re-sloping and 3.) air condition-ing unit repairs/replacements. The alarm system was found by inspection to be out of state code and had to be upgraded in order to continue its function. The work was done during May and June and is now complete. The parking lot work is needed so that ice build-up doesn't oc-cur during the winter and present a safety hazard. The plan is to do that in the fall. A portion of the west lot will be torn up and re-paved so the water drains away properly. The air-conditioning systems associated with our new church are getting old (30 years now). Three of them broke down dur-ing the high heat period we had in July. Two were fixable and one had to be replaced (the furnaces are separate from the A/C

units; the church furnaces were replaced three years ago during the period of renovation we did using the mem-ber estate money we received ). We plan to replace one or two of the eight A/C units each year until they are all renewed. Another project that is complete, but not yet paid off, is the New Church Offices. Back in June of 2017, when we kicked off the project, we asked for pledges of up to three years maximum from our members. This June, the three year period was over. I am in the process of cleaning up the reminder of the pledges still due, at which point we will know the balance due to the Luther-an Church Extension Fund (LCEF). We took out this

loan during construction to fin-ish off the construction cost. I would guess it will be in the area of $10,000 to $12,000. I am planning on asking the congrega-tion to do a fund drive to pay that loan off so Trinity will again be debt free. It's probably not easy for some of you to increase your dona-tions at this time, especially if you are not working because of the Covid virus or are on a fixed income. However, our church

is still going strong and needs to continue going strong with streaming services, virtual VBS and now the planned streaming Bible classes. And our property needs to be kept up-to-date and in good condition. Together, our two pastors and other staff and volunteers will continue God's work and expand it. But the expenses keep coming and inflation makes them even higher. Please do what you can to keep us in the black this year and in the future. As a side note, I've noticed that peo-ple are not giving as much to the Improvements Fund as before. The Improvements Fund is important for keeping up our property. It is just as important as the General Fund . Please try to dip in a little deeper for it if you can. Meanwhile we all pray that God be with us in these trying times and that He will keep us safe.

Podcasts of the weekly messages from the pastors. You can

either watch just the message (without the whole service) or

you can listen to the audio of it. You can also sign up for

our audio podcasts at Apple iTunes or Google Play.

With VBS going online only this

year, we will be recording, mixing

and publishing each day’s video for

streaming online. This will be ac-

complished during the week of July

27 so everything is ready the next

week for VBS. We’ll be using

some of the technology we’ve had

but never used before! Hopefully by the time you read this,

it’ll be done and it will have been a success!

We have also purchased a portable video camera and associ-

ated equipment which will allow us to stream the Bible

studies that will be returning to Sunday mornings. This will

include the ability of those who are watching to send online

notes and comments that can be relayed to the pastor during

the study making it interactive! We are excited to bring this

to you!

Financially, you have all really came through for us. We

paid off the 2019-2020 KDHL contract. Streaming service

has been paid for 2020-2021. The new KDHL contract will

start October 1 for 2020-2021 year, and we’re well on our

way to pay that off. THANK YOU! We couldn’t do this

without your prayers and contributions!

Please continue to pray for the Radio and Video ministry.

We will continue to find innovative ways to deliver the great

news of the Word of God. Our goal is to keep Trinity at the

forefront of technological trends and spread the Word!

W inston Churchill reportedly said, “we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” According to Churchill then,

our lives are defined less by what we have gotten and more by what we give away. Our Lord’s life is defined in this way. He gave completely of Himself for us. He became man for us. He taught the truth of God’s Word. He healed those with many and various diseases. He died the death that we deserve because of sin. He gave of Himself in order to save us from sin, death, and hell. So it is that by giving completely of Himself, He got us for Himself, making us citi-zens of His eternal kingdom by grace. As it was for Jesus, so it is also for us. We get more from giving than we do from simply getting. Giving softens our hearts and frees us from the worries of this world and mak-ing a living. For when we are singularly focused on making a living, we are singularly focused on what we get.

That mindset begins to bleed into all areas of our lives – our relationships with friends and family, with neighbors and coworkers, and with the Lord. It shifts our focus from asking “How can I be a friend, family member, neighbor,

and servant to others?” to “What have they done for me lately?” We become more selfish instead of selfless. But, when we give, we do not have less, and we do not become less. We have more and become more. Because when we give, we join in the bond of friendship and family, the bond of ser-vice to those around us out of love for them. And love is the fulfillment of the Law. It is the nature of God Himself,

for God is Love. Thus, we are participating in the divine nature. As Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).

garage sale in the church parking lot.
