NOW HERE’S A TIPBy JoAnn Derson
* Need a patch for old woodwork? Try mixing paint (whatever color you are using) and fl our. Make a paste, fi ll in the holes and let dry. It’s hard like cement, and can be sanded into shape if necessary.
* When you get near the end of a roll of paper tow-els, save it to put in your car. Put together a kit with the following items: a small bottle of Windex or other cleaner, a squeeze bottle of water, some wet wipes and the short roll of paper tow-els. Now you’ll always be ready for a quick on-the-road cleanup.
* Use baking soda to scrub
away stuck-on food on your grill. Sprinkle it on the met-al brush, and scrub away. If your grate is beyond the power of fi re and baking soda, remove it and lay it on the ground on some newspa-per. Spray with oven clean-er and let sit (keep pets and kids away from it). Rinse with a garden hose and re-place on the grill.
* “I have a plastic cup that changes color when the drink is hot. Oddly enough, it changes at the perfect tem-perature for my baby’s bath. So, I fi ll the tub and toss in the cup. When the cup starts to change back to its origi-nal color (blue), I know the bathwater is not too hot.” --
P. in Idaho
* Sprinkle baby powder indish gloves to help themslide on in an instant.
* “To remove muffi ns orrolls from a pan, set it on anold, damp towel for a min-ute. The steam must loosenthe bottoms, because theyjust slide right out. I thank my mom for this tip.” --Janey R. via e-mail

Local Author Mary Jo Hodge The second novel of the trilogy, “Journey Through Dark-ness” is now available from createspace.com and amazon.com. and at the Eden Kazoo Gift Shop plus Snippets and Gems in Hamburg. Mary Jo Hodge, local Western NY au-thor’s most recent novel, “RITA” expands on the stories revealed in “Johanna” - the first book of the trilogy. Set during the turbulent years just before and during World War I, these novels emphasize the consequences when little girls grow up and find their parent’s love isn’t so ‘unconditional’ after all. Important life decisions involve doing as parents say or risking loss of their close knit con-nections from childhood. These were the years when in some cultures women insisted on their right to vote. Now, in America at least, we have forgotten the difficulty with which that right was won. Now the big question is the right to choose regard-less of gender. Then, often marriages were arranged by parents with economic and status factors outweighing love and caring. Sometimes they still are. Cultural change is slow and has many ups and downs; checks and balances. The author, Mary Jo Hodge, calls on her eighty years of life to address issues that today have different faces, but in someway are as old as time. Much has changed; much has stayed the same. She hopes her novels entertain and, more importantly, offer food for thought. Mary Jo lives in Eden, NY, choosing to retire here with her husband. She holds a MS in psychology and a DPA in public administration, emphasis on mental health policy. Since retiring she has worked with youth gardening pro-grams and served on the board of Housing Options Made Easy, which she was instrumental in starting. Mary Jo re-ceived a lifetime achievement award from this not-for-prof-it group a few years ago. An avid quilter, Mary Jo was one of the founding mem-bers of the Eden Quilt Guild. Her novel, “Stitching Togeth-er” tells the stories of how this group started. The women who originally formed this group and are still quilting to-day, contributed their stories to this book which is based on actual events. Some of Mary Jo’s quilts will be featured at the next Eden Quilt Show when they celebrate their twenty-five year anniversary in September. In addition to writing fiction Mary Jo does interviews and prepares short articles for the National Parkinson Founda-tion, Western New York Chapter Newsletter which is pub-lished quarterly. She is interested in all types of movement disorders, having personally coped with Parkinson for the past several years. Her many friends and her devoted hus-band have made living fully with the disease possible.

The Eden Stampede 4-H club is very excited for the Erie County Fair in August. We will be entering a variety of 4-H projects in the Youth Development Building in-cluding container gardens. On May 17th we went to Henry’s Gardens and Mrs. Henry taught us how to choose a plant depending on if it would be in the sun or shade, how to correctly plant in a pot, and how to take care of our plant every day. Henry’s Gardens gener-ously donated all the plants, pots, soil, fertilizer, and a yummy snack too! Club members chose their own plant from a selection of dahlias, coleus, ornamen-tal purple peppers, and im-patiens. We then got our hands dirty putting the soil in the pots and pinching the flower heads off to increase flower budding and growth. Once our flowers were planted we watered them with a liquid fertilizer mix. This is important because it feeds the plants nutrients

to make them grow healthy. Mrs. Henry showed us a special faucet in her green-house where we can bring our own gallon jugs and fill them up with fertilizer to use at home! We had so much fun at Henry’s Gardens! A big thank you to Mrs. Henry
for teaching us so much about flowers and planting. Thanks to you we feel con-fident that we can do a good job caring for our flowers until the Fair! By: Elle Noecker, Ella Ar-chabald, and Lexi Wierzba

COUCH THEATERDVD PREVIEWS
By Sam Struckhoff
PICKS OF THE WEEK“Kingsman: Secret Service” (R) -- Behind a London tailor shop conspires a top-secret group of elite spies named after knights from King Ar-thur’s court, whose gadgets, skills and wit are the world’s best chance against super-villains. Colin Firth stars as “Gallahad” a bespectacled veteran agent who takes an interest in “Eggsy,” a rough-around-the-edges youth and promising recruit. A villain-ous Samuel L. Jackson stirs up chaos as a super-wealthy American mogul with access to mind control. This ultra-violent adventure lands somewhere between James Bond and “Kill Bill.” There’s even a gorgeous fe-male minion who fi ghts us-ing weaponized prosthetic legs. The violence gets inten-tionally gratuitous at times, but when the scenery gets drenched in blood, the movie wipes it up with dry humor.
“Serena” (R) -- A dashing lumber baron (Bradley Coo-per) and his ravishing new wife (Jennifer Lawrence) be-
come entangled in a web of jealousy and violence in this lukewarm suspense drama. George Pemberton (Cooper) proposes to Serena (Law-rence) the minute he sees her. After their whirlwind romance, they settle into his North Carolina lumber mill where a jealous business partner, a conservationist sheriff and George’s preg-nant ex-fl ing are all waiting to tip things over. Cooper and Lawrence have quantifi able chemistry, but the reactants just didn’t re-act in this environment. The duo lit up the screen in “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle,” but the script works against them here. More suspense? More murder? It just needs more room for the actors to breathe.
“Project Almanac” (PG-13) -- In this found-footage ad-venture (which is apparently still a viable genre), a gaggle of modern-day teens discov-er plans for a time-machine, and get to work using it on the most pedestrian appli-
cations. With extraordinarycosmic power, these kids go back in time to help a buddypass a chemistry test, or buy the winning lotto numbers, orget back at a bully. Of course, these little indulgences rippleinto larger consequences for the time stream. Time-travel adventures are hard to write-- so many paradoxical rulesto follow, even when you’re playing it loose.
“Red Army” (PG) -- From the ‘70s up to the fall of theBerlin Wall, the Soviet Unionhad an iron grip on the Olym-pic gold and world-cham-pionship titles for hockey. The Red Army team was un-beatable on the ice, and evendrew the attention of RonaldReagan, who urged the U.S.hockey team to prove the su-periority of capitalism by de-feating the Reds in the rink. This funny-now documenta-ry focuses on the USSR teamcaptain, Slava Fetisov, as he gives his account of hockeyglory, Russian pride and So-viet oppression.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Woman’s Eyebrows Have Almost DisappearedDEAR DR. ROACH: I am an active 63-year-old female of normal weight. I exercise several times a week and am in seemingly good health. About a year ago I noticed that my eyebrows were dis-appearing, starting on the outer edges. They are now almost completely gone.During my annual physi-cal in November, my gen-eral physician found that I have thyroid nodules. Three large ones were biopsied and proved negative. Blood work, including a TSH lev-el, is normal. Both my GP and dermatologist feel cer-tain that the nodules are not causing the eyebrow prob-lem, because I don’t have any other symptoms of thy-roid disease, but they don’t know what is causing the loss. -- K.F.
ANSWER: The loss of eye-brows, superciliary madaro-sis, has many possible caus-es, but low thyroid is the fi rst that most doctors think of. A TSH level is a reasonable screening test for thyroid disease, but if the suspicion is high, I check additional thyroid tests, such a thyrox-ine (T4), free T4 and T3. Oc-casionally TSH still can be in the very broad “normal” range for most people but be abnormal for that person.Other causes of eyebrow loss include autoimmune disease, infl ammatory skin conditions and infection. Repeated plucking of the eyebrows can lead to per-manent loss of the follicles. Allergies to cosmetics also can cause eyebrow and eye-lash loss. Have you changed your makeup recently?***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 42-year-old woman in good health. I am beginning a new job soon, and I feel it’s a good idea to build up my im-munity before I work in this new environment. I chose an over-the-counter support supplement, but I am com-ing down with a cold!I have found that I regularly react in this way to vitamins and supplements. Is this common? -- D.F.ANSWER: Having a strong immune system is always a good idea. However, sup-plements, even those that say they are good for the immune system, have no proof that they prevent colds or shorten their duration. A healthy diet, exercise and good sleep are much better for your immune system than a supplement. Some readers insist that these products are effective for them, but the science so far has not proven it. Also, any drug, herb, vitamin or other supplement always has the potential for side effects. I would advise you to save your money.***DEAR DR. ROACH: I often wonder if the white mold
one sees on supermarketblueberries is at all danger-ous to one’s heath. I’ve eat-en a few with such mold, but with no apparent effect.-- A.W.ANSWER: I contacted anexpert at Michigan StateUniversity, who told me that the white mold is likely atype of trichoderma. Trich-oderma are not usually dan-gerous to humans, althoughsome people can have an al-lergic reaction to it.Still, moldy blueberries arelikely to be old, not have asmany nutrients and not tasteso good. Eat berries rightaway, before they can get moldy, and if you notice that they are moldy as soon asyou get them home from thestore, take them back.***Dr. Roach regrets that he isunable to answer individualletters, but will incorporate them in thecolumn whenever possi-ble. Rural Transit Brings New Vans to North Collins, Collins, Gowanda and Holland, Sardinia
Volunteers needed to Drive and Dispatch On Thursday, May 7, 2015 Rural Transit Service volun-teers, staff members and elected offi cials gathered to intro-duce the new Rural Transit Service vans. One van will ser-vice Collins, North Collins and Gowanda a second van will service Holland and Sardinia. Transportation has become a serious problem for many citizens in Erie County. As families move away and inde-pendence becomes a greater challenge for seniors and the increasing transportation costs the need for Rural Transit Service arises. Rural Transit Service allows independence, companionship, and security to our riders. Rural Transit Service is a non-profi t transportation service for the elderly, disabled and low/moderate income residents of rural Erie County. Transportation is provided for medi-cal appointments, grocery shopping, banking and personal business trips, etc. with medical taking priority. Client reg-istration is as simple as a phone call to your local dispatch site. Since I cannot drive and live alone, I would have diffi culty in shopping and keeping medical appointments. I would be lost without the van. Thank you so much,” voiced a client. Rural Transit Service is asking anyone who hears about their service to get the word out to all of those eligible - “We want everyone eligible to use our ser-vice.” But Rural Transit needs volunteers who are willing to give back to their community! Since Rural Transit Service is entirely volunteer driven we are looking for all kinds of dedicated volunteers -drivers, dispatchers and driver aides Our volunteers can work four or eight hour shifts one day a week between 8AM and 4PM Monday through Friday. We also need volunteers who can help seasonally or would like to be back-up volunteers. We are currently in need of volunteers in the Southtowns areas.
