Dear Friends,

Each life is precious. Every death is significant. Tragically, it’s hard to remember this truth during these sad days of grief and devastation. As of this printing, almost 750,000 human beings infected with COVID-19 have died. Horrific as that number is, and knowing it’s going to get bigger still, more upsetting is the loss of each and every one of them as a beloved parent, child, sibling, grandparent, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, cousin, loving partner, colleague, or dear friend.

This Yom Kippur, we’re also mindful of personal losses. The passing of our loving parents, siblings, relatives and friends in the past year. Grief we ought to share by embracing and being with one another. Not offering our condolences at a physical distance, no less sincere.

Bound together and caring for one another, we hope for life’s renewal during this sacred season. Yet, dimming our hope is our awareness of so many deaths near and dear to so many people. Each life is precious. Every death is significant. We cherish and strive to remember each individual in life and the memories of all whom we personally recall with love today.

Over the course of a year, more than 58 million people die. It’s a staggering statistic. Balanced by the birth of almost 150 million new lives each year. Everyday murders and accidents end the lives of 1,300 human beings. Mosquitoes take 2,800 lives daily. More than 50,000 people die from illnesses. I don’t present these numbers to shock or upset. Nor do I diminish the current plague of death in our Coronavirus impacted world.

I want to remind each and every one of us of a risk. We cannot ever become de-sensitized to death. We must always pause. Honor the dead. Care for the bereaved with abiding compassion. Cherish life. Do all we can to live it fully. Do all we can to help others live fully, safely, and in health.

At this memorial moment we confront loss and disappointment all around us. We all grieve. How briefly it seems we have and we hold. When we feel sad, we long for consolation.

Experiencing the joys of pride and accomplishment, we grow sensitive. How briefly it seems we reflect and rejoice. When we feel happy, we hope for perspective.

Each Life is Precious

Each of us with our memories understands. We prevent ourselves from being de-sensitized to death by remembering our loved ones’ purposes in life. We honor their accomplishments. We internalize the lessons of their lives as wisdom for our own.

During these difficult days, personally for some of us and collectively for all of humanity, we declare. Each life is precious. Every death is significant. Ironically, that’s why the future is bright. Those we’ve loved and lost taught us how to live. Our memories of them from the past sustain us today and, collected to-gether, assure our people’s and our world’s future. We hold onto our memories because they inspire us to move forward.

Our memories inspire our lives. Our lives inspire our hopes. Our hopes inspire our faith. Our faith inspires our vision. Our vision inspires our goals. Our goals inspire our striving to touch the edge of eternity. Every death is significant because each life is precious.

B’Shalom Rav,

Rabbi Ron Shulman

During our Yizkor Memorial Prayers, we’re aware of the Jewish calendar.

Four times each year, on Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Passover, and Shavuot we recite Yizkor. We do this because celebrating our holidays connects our personal and family lives to the continuing life and heritage of the Jewish people. We do this because the ritual of Yizkor allows us to express our people’s collective and shared memories in the most personal way possible. We each remember our parents, spouses, children, siblings, and loved ones. Their lives along with ours tell our people’s story.

Our last public gathering at Congregation Beth El was for Purim this past March. When Passover arrived, we celebrated our Seders in seclusion. Since then, we’ve completed counting the seven weeks of the Omer, including observing Yom HaShoah and celebrating Yom HaAtzmaut. Next came Shavuot, Tisha B’Av, and now the High Holy Days – all online.

During our Yizkor Memorial Prayers, we’re aware of the Jewish calendar.

The courage and dedication to Jewish identity we frivolously celebrate on Purim is a set up for Passover. Then we get serious about what it means to believe in God and to represent God in the world. Freedom, human equality and dignity along with social justice are the ethical demands of our monotheistic religious tradition.

Gratitude for all that sustains our lives in God’s world is the reason for our daily counting of the Omer. Tempered by the sadness of mourning the generation of the Shoah and enhanced as we rejoice in the creation of the State of Israel, our Omer season of blessing and history anticipates Shavuot. We receive Torah, the revelation of God’s presence in our lives. The substance of Jewish purpose. The wisdom of Judaism. On Tisha B’Av, a day of lamentation and national sadness, we recollect our history and consider our destiny.

Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur celebrate the moral me. We measure the character of our lives and the merit of our choices in order to earn the gift of our lives. Soon it will be Sukkot. Dwelling in our Sukkot, we celebrate life as a journey from beginning to arrival, from slavery to freedom, from personal con-straint to moral responsibility. We strive to care for one another and our natural environment. Hanukkah is a partner holiday to Purim. Courage, dedication to Jewish identity, and devotion to the light of God’s presence in our lives through ritual and learning.

The Jewish Calendar

During our Yizkor Memorial Prayers, we’re aware of the Jewish calendar.

At no point over the past many, many weeks did we cease celebrating, stop demonstrating, or were unable to actualize the ideas and ideals our calendar of Jewish holidays symbolizes. Especially Shabbat, our weekly respite for joy and renewal celebrating God’s creative and redemptive presence in the world.

During these pandemic months, we’ve lost the chance to be with those whom we miss. We also recall our loved ones whose deaths changed our lives. We’ve lost their smiles, their hugs, their cheers, and their support. We cherish about them these simple, personal gestures which we hold onto as memories but no longer as realities. We’ve lost hearing the wisdom in their voices and seeing the love in their eyes. We’ve lost their laughter and tears, their complaints and their compliments. Yes, we hear it all and see it all in our memories of them. No, it’s not the same.

As a synagogue family, we grieve similar losses. We’ve lost our synagogue routines and habits. We’ve lost the chance to sing and talk together. We’ve lost the shared marking of life milestones. We’ve lost the chance to randomly see someone and catch up, or to meet someone new and welcome them to be with us. We’ve lost familiar rituals and comfortable traditions. We’ve lost the chance to voice our complaints and hear each other’s compliments. Yes, we’re doing our best online. No, it’s not the same.

We recite Yizkor to remember our loved ones. Aware of the Jewish calendar we discover our path forward during these trying times.

We hold on to what’s precious from the past. We build new experiences on the foundation of our memories. We honor yesterday’s hopes and achievements with visions of who we are now and dreams of what we can accomplish tomorrow. Those whom we lovingly remember at this sacred hour did this for themselves aware that, in time, we would, too.

During our Yizkor Memorial Prayers, we’re aware of the Jewish calendar.

The calendar’s cycle and values are constant. Which is why we conclude each of our holidays by connecting the lives of our loved ones to the on-going life of the Jewish people. We recite Yizkor Memorial Prayers to express our people’s shared memories in the most personal way possible. We each remember our parents, spouses, children, siblings, and loved ones because their lives from before inspire ours today.

Some of us, blessed with parents who are alive, have a custom of leaving the sanctuary when Yizkor Memorial Prayers are recited. This gesture gratefully reflects our respect.

Others of us, blessed with parents who are alive, have a custom of remaining in the sanctuary when Yizkor Memorial Prayers are recited. This gesture sensitively reflects our memories of other loved ones and honors the lives of those for whom no one else is present.

Yizkor Reflections

For Yizkor Memorial Prayers on Yom Kippur please refer to pages 290 through 294 in our High Holy Day Prayer Book Mahzor Lev Shalem.

For Yizkor Memorial Prayers on Shemini Atzeret, Passover, and Shavuot please refer to pages 330 through 338 in our Prayer Book Siddur Lev Shalem.

Some of us recall parents who gave us life, who cared for us and nurtured us and who taught us to take our first steps on our own.

Some of us remember a wife, husband, or partner - our friend and lover - with whom we shared so much of our lives, our failures and achievements, joys and sorrows, intimate secrets.

Some of us recall brothers and sisters, who matured together with us, sometimes competing with us, and sometimes encouraging us on, bound to us by a life-long relationship.

Some of us remember children, entrusted to us too briefly, to whom we gave our loving care and from whom we received a trust that enriched our lives. Their memory is always with us.

Many of us recall relatives who knew us, teachers who affected us, and beloved friends who walked beside us in life, guiding us, listening to us, supporting us.

Our lives are shaped by those who were alongside us as we walked on our path.

May our inheritance impel us to strive to live lives of holiness and service. May memories of love inspire us to love; may painful memories impel us to mitigate the pain others experience. And may we be granted the strength to affirm life's meaning, even in the face of death.

— Siddur Lev Shalem

Memories Live and Memories GiveMemories live. They cannot replace a loved one's presence nor fill the void we feel in their absence. But our memories do live. Our memories keep our loved ones among us. They remind us at all times of whom we miss and how important they remain to our own lives. The influence of those whom we remember from yesterday continues to shape our own experiences today. Our memories are real and the feelings they stir within us are genuine. Memories live.

Memories give. They provide the background for our choices and preferences. Our memories remind us of things we have done, joys we have shared and sorrows we have overcome. Each of our memories lays a foundation for a new discovery or opportunity. In memory the people whom we still love motivate our efforts and encoura=ge us. Our memories also provide strength and courage. They guide us as we cope with challenges or difficulties. Memories give.

Memories live and memories give. So do we. As we remember our loved ones today, we can seek to emulate our memories of them. We will do this by leading lives of quality and giving of ourselves to those with whom we live and share our current days. The life and gift of each of our memories can enrich us in the present moment as they connect us to both the past we have known and the future we can only imagine.

Mourn me not with tears, ashes or sackcloth

Nor dwell in darkness, sadness or remorse

Remember that I love you, and wish you for a life of song.

My immortality, if there be such for me, is not in tears, blame, or self-recrimination.

But in the joy you give to others, in raising the fallen and loosening the fetters of the bound.

In your loyalty to God’s special children – the widow, the orphan, the poor, the stranger in your gates, the weak – I take pride.

My immortality is bound up with God’s eternity,

with God’s justice, truth, and righteousness,

And that eternity is strengthened by your loyalty and your love

Honor me with laugher and with goodness

With these, the better part of me lives on beyond the grave.

The first time we recite Yizkor Memorial Prayers, we are slow to gaze at the words. They’re not familiar. The Mourner’s Kaddish is better known. So, we read the words like new members in a select club. A group to which, unwillingly, we all gain admittance. We join the sacred cohort of children and spouses, parents and siblings, relatives and friends who recite the heartfelt hope of every Jewish generation, Yizkor Elohim. May God remember our loved ones’ souls that we may remember their lives and their love.

May God remember the souls of our brothers and sisters, martyrs of our people, who gave their lives for the sanctification of God’s name and the honor of Israel. May their bravery, dedication, and purity be reflected in our Lives.

May their souls be bound up in the bond of life. And may they rest eternally in dignity and peace. Amen.

Let us stand silent in memory of our dearly beloved sons and daughters who gave their lives for the liberation of our homeland and and the security of our people. They gave us all they had. They poured out their very lifeblood for the freedom of Israel, even as the living waters quench the thirst of the arid soil. Not in monuments of stones or trees shall their memories be preserved, but in the reverence and pride which will, until the end of time, fill the hearts of our people when their memory is recalled.

El Maleh Rahamim Memorial Prayer

God-full source of compassion, by your presence through us, grant peace to them and remember the souls of all our beloved who have gone to their eternal rest. May their memories endure as inspiration for deeds of charity and goodness in all of our lives. May all that is worthy and righteous about them be remembered in life always as their souls are bound up in the bond of life. May they rest in dignity with our eternal love, and in peace. Amen.

Today we recite words of prayer and condolence taken from the wisdom and depth ofJewish experience. Among them is El Maleh Rahamim, a prayer that the bonds of family love and devotion, the closeness of friends, as well as our memories, may become the bonds oflife continually bringing us blessing and goodness.

As we recite these heartfelt words, may we consider ways to transform our love for those whom we recall into a new beauty within the lives we now lead. We acknowledge that so little separates us from them. Therefore, we pray to recognize our need for one another today. Together, let us seek faith, meaning and the comfort of trust for our own lives.

May we live, as our loved ones rest, in dignity, love, and peace.

May the soul of ________________________ whom I remember this day know peace. My thoughts of (him/her) right now bring to mind the many blessings which God has given me through (his/her) life. Well do I know that (his/her) spirit dwells with God. And yet, to think that (s)he is no more with me on earth grieves my heart and saddens my thoughts.

_______________________ so lovingly cared for me, supported me, awakened my mind and raised my spirit. (He/She) helped me to know kindness and compassion. In (his/her) affection I felt genuine love.

May I ever cherish ________________________ 's memory as among the holiest treasures of my life.

In Loving TributeWe place stones on the Grave Marker or by a Memorial Plaque. Why?

To show that we came here respecting our loved one's memory and life.

Stones, pebbles are natural, but do not wither or blow away.

Stones, in the Torah, represent the altar of service to God.

The Bond of Life is symbolized in our memorial prayer by pebbles, or stones, which were used as an ancient way for counting, recollecting the lives and souls for which we are responsible.

God is the "Rock of Israel" - a solid, strong, long-lasting and dependable, Eternal presence.

We pray that our "Rock" grant us strength and comfort, embracing our loved one's soul for eternity.

On the evening of the yahrzeit, and on days Yizkor Memorial Prayers are recited in synagogue, it is customary to light a 24-hour memorial candle and to let it burn the entire day. Though no special prayer or blessing is recited, you may read this kavanah-devotion and/or share your own reflections.

In loving memory, I/we remember our beloved _______________________. In hushed reverence I/we kindle this memorial light grateful that who I/we re-member remain(s) in my/our thoughts and sustain(s) my/our hopes.

The Psalms declare, “Ner Adonai Nishmat Adam – God’s light is the soul of every person.” As I/we kindle this light, I/we dedicate myself/ourselves to the truth that __________________________’s life/lives and memory/memories will always radiate the Divine light of purpose and goodness.

May this memorial light reflect the love my/our loved one(s) shared with me/us in life for which I/we am/are eternally grateful. Thankful for the lives of all whom I/we cherish, I/we remember __________________________ inspired by his/her/their memory/memories to live today and every day with compassion, honesty, and devotion to the heritage of my/our family and people.

Zikhrono livrakhah – May his memory endure as a blessing.

Zikhronah livrakhah – May her memory endure as a blessing.

Zikhronam livrakah – May each of their memories endure as a blessing.

May the glow of this light remind me/us of the significance which I/we strive to bring to my/our days blessed by the memories I/we recall at this quiet moment.

YAHRZEIT MEMORIAL PLAQUE

We welcome you to honor and remember your loved ones on our yahrzeit wall, located inside the Stone Family Sanctuary. Our memorial plaques provide a place where family and fiends can commemorate yahrzeits by placing a stone on the marker. Names inscribed on these yahrzeit plaques are included in Congregation Beth El's annual Book of Remembrance.

If you are interested in purchasing a plaque for your loved ones, please contact the Synagogue office at 858.452.1734.

Sitting ShivaWe sit Shiva. We dwell in our homes, somewhat still and certainly sad. Surrounded by the memories and mementos of a loved one, we sit. Ourbeloved whom we escorted to their graves do not come home with us. Even so, they are present in our thoughts, our tears, our aloneness.

We sit Shiva. Sitting does not tire us out. Sitting Shiva exhausts us, physically and emotionally. We feel the constant activity of family and friends coming and going, serving and helping, praying and paying their respects. Everyone keeping us company with their questions and listening to our often repeated answers. Deriving great comfort from it all, we’re ready for calm when Shiva ends.

We sit Shiva. Lower to the ground. Less focused on our appearance. We sit down to grieve, to slowly reconcile ourselves to a darker reality. To seek meaning in our loss and new routines in our lives. It seems surreal. It can be overwhelming. Better first to sit. Reflect on and assimilate what happened.

We sit Shiva. Shiva is seven, symbolic of what is complete. The world’s creation. The week’s conclusion. Our loved one’s days. We mourn this truth in response to a death. There are many sacred sources for counting seven days as the Shiva period. Among them this Talmudic statement: “What is the source that mourning is for seven days? The Prophet Amos has lamented of God, ‘I will turn your festivals into days of mourning.’ Therefore, just as the festival is seven days, so too is mourning seven days.” It makes poignant sense. A loved one’s death changes our mood, reverses our emotions. Holidays without familiar family members or friends are among our most difficult times, observances of very mixed emotions.

Jewish tradition teaches us that on the first, and especially on the last day of Shiva, “part of the day is equivalent, sufficient to equal the whole day.” In other words, Shiva begins upon our return home from the cemetery, regardless of the time of day, and Shiva concludes on the morning of the seventh day.

This rule, as the whole of Shiva itself, teaches us to stop when our world comes undone. When we think to ourselves we may be too busy, Shiva forces us to pause, but not stop everything else in loving memory. Sitting Shiva helps us refocus our attention.

A general principle of Jewish law guides us in support of a bereaved individual. “The halakhah (law) is according to the most lenient regarding mourning.” Loss of a loved one is hard enough. Jewish tradition does not wish to add to our burden, but rather to support and embrace us at such a vulnerable, difficult time.

Of course, there are many customs and regulations that govern sitting Shiva. Some are authentic; others come from folklore and family habits. But all such practices depend on context and understanding. We are able to sit Shiva in the form and manner most appropriate for our family, and most responsive to our needs and loss.

The life lesson is real. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Strive to honor and apply your best values. Hold yourself to a standard of quality and personal integrity. Exercise compassion and care, even toward yourself. After all, it is the gentle, genuine balance of our loved ones’ best traits and human foibles we most recall.

Our tradition considers the first three days of Shiva to be the most intense, the most necessary to observe. “The first three days are for crying,” declares the Talmud. It is, however, a mistake to conclude from this emphasis that the subsequent four days are not significant. “The full seven days are to eulogize,” the Talmud adds. In fact, it is during days four through seven that most mourners find the inner strength to do the deepest work of accommodating themselves to the stark nature of their new situation. Mourning is hard. It does get easier over time. Not easy, simply less hard.

We sit Shiva to remember what matters in life. We sit Shiva to remember how to be gentler and more compassionate toward ourselves and toward others. We sit Shiva to remember that even as life challenges us we can live well and with meaning. We sit Shiva, as we recite Yizkor Memorial Prayers, to remember those whom we love, and most of all, to learn how to honor their lives and their memories evermore.

We can never be ready for the death of a loved one, but we can be

prepared. Please call upon us for answers to any questions you have

or for discussion about funeral arrangements, family sensitivities,

Jewish beliefs regarding life and death. In death, as in life, Jewish

values uphold the dignity of every person and the loving respect

each individual merits. These ideals guide our care for you and the

assistance we will try to provide.
