Memorial Booklet Yizkor 5781 (2020-2021)

“Memory is the key to redemption,” said the great spiritual master, the Baal Shem Tov. And that is true for two reasons: Memory allows us to look back at the lives of those who came before us. Through memory, we understand whence we have come, and in response, like a surfer on a wave, we place ourselves on a trajectory that carries us through life. Sometimes, if we are truly fortunate, we simply and gladly want to continue on the path blazed by our beloved ancestors. Sometimes, if our relationships were conflicted, we feel we must swim upstream and bring some balance into a world that lost direction. In either case, we will bring the world closer to redemption. But at the same time, memory allows us to bring ourselves closer to redemption, both emotionally and spiritually. From what do we need to be redeemed? From the feeling that our life is empty. Memory, thank G-d, allows us to understand the purpose, and meaning, and value, of our existence. Whether we follow the path of our ancestors, or feel compelled to move in a different direction, in either case, we understand that what we do, matters. How we live, matters. That we live, matters. As Jews, we always have an answer to the question, “Why I am I here?” We are here to shape the future. When we remember the past, and envision the future, the present comes alive, rich with possibility, awesome with responsibility. Truly, the key to redemption. So that we may honor the memory of those who came be-fore by each pledging: In spite of my mortality, I will not fear death more that I celebrate life. The mysteries of life and death are many: The suffering of the innocent, the curse of dementia. The pathetic frailty of the elderly, the tragedy of young lives cut short. All rivers run to the sea, but the sea is never full. We cannot fathom Your mysteries. Our lives and our wis-dom are as nothing. As a drop of water in the sea, as a grain of sand on the shore are our few days in eternity. But could it be that You have brought us into life so that, in spite of our few years, and in spite of all that remains mys-terious to us, we might have made the world a better place? Looking into the darkness, contemplating the mysteries of existence, we can perceive the special mystery that has Sustained us through the generations: Each one of us will die. But the people of Israel will never die. And knowing this we can say, with complete faith: The Lord is My light and my help. Whom shall I fear? Oh G-d, what are mortals that you care about them? What are human beings? That you even think of them? And yet, you have made us just short of angels and crowned us with honor and elegance.

Oh G-d, what are mortals that you care about them? What are human beings, that you even think of them? We are like a breath, our days a fleeting shadow. We are like new sprouts of grass. In the morning it grows, in the evening it is cut down and withers. So teach us to number our days, that we may get us a heart of wisdom. For life has meaning, life has plan and purpose. We were not created but to perish. In the end, the dust returns to the earth as it was, but the spirit returns unto G-d who gave it. Until then, we proclaim before you, living and everlasting King, that every day with mercy you return our souls to us. How great is your faithfulness to us! From you we learn love and faith, righteousness and sacred striving. Those who came before us learned these things, and they have left their imprints on the hearts of their loved ones. May we do the same, for those who come after us. In this life, may we seek to place G-d before us always. We will never stumble if we sense G-d’s presence. We can live with joy, body and soul can rejoice. We understand that there can be no love without loss, no joy with out sorrow May we have the courage to accept the whole of life—the love and the loss—the joy and the sorrow.

Oh G-d, what are mortals that you care about them? What are human beings, that you even think of them? We are like a breath, our days a fleeting shadow. We are like new sprouts of grass. In the morning it grows, in the evening it is cut down and withers. So teach us to number our days, that we may get us a heart of wisdom. For life has meaning, life has plan and purpose. We were not created but to perish. In the end, the dust returns to the earth as it was, but the spirit returns unto G-d who gave it. Until then, we proclaim before you, living and everlasting King, that every day with mercy you return our souls to us. How great is your faithfulness to us! IN MEMORIAM In this memorial hour we recall those of our relaticves who have been taken from us. Though they are no longer with us, we are sustained and comforted by the thought that the goodness which they brought into our lives remains an enduring blessing which we can bequeath to our descendents. Their memories are enshrined in our sanctuary, and are gratefully recorded on the tablets of our hearts. May the Source of all comfort send consolation and healing to us and all others who mourn them. May their memories endure as a lasting blessing in our midst.

“Memory is the key to redemption,” said the great spiritual master, the Baal Shem Tov. And that is true for two reasons: Memory allows us to look back at the lives of those who came before us. Through memory, we understand whence we have come, and in response, like a surfer on a wave, we place ourselves on a trajectory that carries us through life. Sometimes, if we are truly fortunate, we simply and gladly want to continue on the path blazed by our beloved ancestors. Sometimes, if our relationships were conflicted, we feel we must swim upstream and bring some balance into a world that lost direction. In either case, we will bring the world closer to redemption. But at the same time, memory allows us to bring ourselves closer to redemption, both emotionally and spiritually. From what do we need to be redeemed? From the feeling that our life is empty. Memory, thank G-d, allows us to understand the purpose, and meaning, and value, of our existence. Whether we follow the path of our ancestors, or feel compelled to move in a different direction, in either case, we understand that what we do, matters. How we live, matters. That we live, matters. As Jews, we always have an answer to the question, “Why I am I here?” We are here to shape the future. When we remember the past, and envision the future, the present comes alive, rich with possibility, awesome with responsibility. Truly, the key to redemption.
