SPORTSMANSHIP
Sportsmanship is the maxim of athletics. It means treating others as you wish to be
treated. As student-athletes, we must develop the practice of playing by the rules,
exercising self-discipline and self-control, showing respect for authority, and
demonstrating the spirit of hard work and sacrifice. We must always treat opponents
with fairness, respect, and courtesy. As student-athletes, we must seriously accept the
responsibility and privilege of representing Rio Linda High School and our community.
FAN BEHAVIOR
We encourage all students as well as community members to come out and support the
athletes of Rio Linda High School. Good sportsmanship is not only expected from RLHS
athletes, but also the fans. Direct your excitement and support to our teams. Derogatory
and unsportsmanlike behavior directed towards our teams/staff, the opponent, the
opponent’s fans, or the referees is in bad form and does not reflect the high standards of
RLHS. Fans are expected to treat guests from opposing schools and the referees/officials
with respect and courtesy.
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY
In order to be eligible for participation, a student must have at least a 2.0 GPA as of the
last grading quarter/semester prior to or during that sport season.
RLHS has two athletic academic advisors. They are here to help our athletes with all
things academic. They will perform grade checks, assign study hall, tutor, connect
athletes with tutoring, develop academic action plans, and inform student athletes about
NCAA requirements/clearing house.
ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION PACKETS
Athletic participation packets can be picked up from the office. A physical exam and
parent signatures included in the packet must be completed and turned in to the Athletic
Director prior to tryouts.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES
Attendance is computerized and we do not issue admits for readmission to class. If it is
necessary to be absent, parents should call the attendance Office at 566-2725 on the first
day of the absence and each day thereafter, until the student returns to school. If a parent
does not call in before the student returns, you must send the student to school with a
note; this will act as a deterrent for further disciplinary actions and allow the student to
make up missed assignments. If a student is absent more than 5 school days, a doctor’s
note is required upon return.
All unverified absences will be considered unexcused or a cut.
Anyone requesting student information, clearing attendance, visiting a teacher, getting an
early dismissal, withdrawing a student or delivering any school related items to a student
must sign in and show identification. Anyone other than a parent/guardian of a student
will be asked to wait until the office can get authorization from the parent/guardian
before being allowed to speak to a student or receive student information.
If it is necessary to have any corrections made to attendance, computer or teacher error,
the change must be done within 5 days or the attendance cannot be changed. Once the
District ADA report has been completed, the Attendance Office CANNOT make ANY
changes. Please refer to the progressive Discipline for consequences for “cutting” and
tardiness.
EXCUSED ABSENCES: Illness, medical appointment, death in the immediate family,
funeral services – One day in state, three days out of state; class field trip.
10
needed at home, etc. (classified by the State as unexcused)
TRUANCY: Absence without parent knowledge or prior consent, habitual unverified
absences.
EARLY DISMISSALS: Whenever a student must leave school for any reason, the
parent/guardian must request an early dismissal in person (must sign student out), or if by
phone/note, a valid telephone number must be given so that the request may be verified.
Parents should expect to provide identification before their children are released to them.
Because of the high volume of Early Dismissals on Rally Days, it is best to call the
Attendance Office at (916) 566-2725 or send a note with your student by 12:00 noon.
Please keep in mind that locating your student may be difficult once they are in the rally.
CLOSED CAMPUS
Students are not allowed to leave campus anytime between periods 1-6 without an Early
Dismissal. (All ROP students are required to show a badge upon request of staff when
leaving the campus or arriving on campus).
COUNSELING GUIDELINES
Scheduling Appointments-
Students may sign up for an appointment with their counselor before school, after
school, or at lunchtime. Students are also encouraged to contact their counselor
with questions or concerns via email (School Loop or regular district mail).
COLLEGE AND CAREER SERVICES
The RLHS Counseling Team includes a Guidance Resource Technician who schedules
visits from college representatives and maintains a website with a large variety of
scholarship opportunities.
CAMPUS APPEARANCE
Each Rio Linda High School student will be environmentally responsible and adhere to a
“no impact” policy. That is, he/she will protect the RLHS environment from defacement,
will respect the landscape, and will remove all garbage or trash that he/she may have
generated by placing their trash in the nearest trash can. The campus of RLHS will be
protected for the full use and enjoyment of future students, faculty, administrators, and
community members.
DRESS CODE
In an effort to provide a safe and orderly school environment for our students and in response to a desire to
keep district schools from the threats or harmful influence of any groups or gangs which advocate
substance abuse, violence, or disruptive behavior, the School District has adopted Basic Dress Guidelines
and a Prohibited Items List which will be implemented at all district schools.
The purpose of adopting these Basic Dress Guidelines and Prohibited Items List is not to infringe on any
individual student’s right to freedom of expression, but rather to encourage students to “Dress for Success”
and to come to school properly prepared for participating in the educational process. Another purpose is to
inform parents about these policies so that they will have sufficient advance notice before purchasing
clothing for students.

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCESS AND CHANGES MAY TAKE PLACE AS NECESSARY.
DISCIPLINE AND BEHAVIOR
The following standards, rules, policies, and consequences have been developed and
designed with the safety and welfare of the students and staff at Rio Linda High School in
mind. Your cooperation is expected and appreciated. This handbook addresses the more
common concerns and issues that might arise and should be considered a general
guideline. Teachers will also present their own classroom-specific standards,
expectations, and consequences. Unique circumstances will be evaluated by the
administration as they occur.
Behavior Standards
At Rio Linda High School it is believed that the behavior of students must reflect the
standards of good citizenship demanded of members of a democratic society. Self-
discipline and taking responsibility for one’s actions are among the ultimate goals of
education. The following statements are representative of the behavioral philosophies
and expectations at RLHS:
Students shall obey constituted authority. This shall include conformance to
school rules and regulations and to those provisions of civil law that apply to
the conduct of juvenile minors.
Citizenship in a democratic society requires respect for the rights of others.
Student conduct shall reflect consideration for the rights and privileges of
others.
13
High personal standards of courtesy, decency, morality, clean language,
honesty and wholesome relationships with others shall be maintained.
Respect for real and personal property, pride in one’s work, and achievement
within one’s ability shall be expected of all students. Students are expected to
adhere to the standards and expectations not only during the regular school
day but at all school-related functions regardless of time and location.
It is important for the students to know that the school may take action for any violation
of school rules that occur after the student leaves home and prior to arrival at home after
school is dismissed. This includes incidents that occur off campus. Alcohol, Drugs and Other Controlled Substances Students may not use, be under the influence of, buy, sell or give intoxicants or dangerous drugs to others. Violation of this rule results in disciplinary action, which may range from suspension to possible expulsion from the school district. If the final disposition is reinstatement on this campus, students may be barred from participation in school-related activities. Tobacco Rio Linda High School facilities have been designated as tobacco-free. State law prohibits possession or use of tobacco in any form. Tobacco use and/or possession will result in disciplinary action. Repeated offenses will result in citation by police and suspension. Students are advised that the school periodically employs the use of trained dogs to sniff for drug possession and will use breathalyzers if a student is suspected of alcohol use.
14
Assemblies
Assemblies are a regular part of the educational process. They include programs for
education, entertainment, elections, and pep rally functions. They help create better
school spirit and develop leadership and talent. Appropriate student conduct is necessary
for successful assemblies.
Rules of Conduct for Assemblies and Rallies:
No talking once the program has begun (unless it is a rally)
Be attentive, responsive and show common courtesy when someone is
speaking or performing
Bullying
On June 26, 2012 the Twin Rivers Unified School District Governing Board approved
board policy 5131.2 to specifically address bullying prevention. The Governing Board
recognizes the harmful effects of bullying on student learning and school attendance and
desires to provide safe school environments that protect students from physical and
emotional harm. District employees shall establish student safety as a high priority and
shall not tolerate bullying of any student. No student or group of students shall, through
physical, written, verbal, or other means, harass, sexually harass, threaten, intimidate,
cyberbully, cause bodily injury to, or commit hate violence against any other student or
school personnel.
Cyberbullying includes the transmission of harassing communications, direct threats, or
other harmful texts, sounds, or images on the Internet, social media, or other technologies
using a telephone, computer, or any wireless communication device. Cyberbullying also
includes breaking into another person’s electronic account and assuming that person’s
identity in order to damage that person’s reputation.
Any student who engages in bullying to or from school, on school premises, or off
campus in a manner that causes or is likely to cause a substantial disruption of a school
related function or school attendance, shall be subject to discipline, which may include
suspension or expulsion, in accordance with district policies and regulations.
15
Cell Phones/I-Pods/Electrical Devices
The use of any electronic listening or recording device in any classroom of the
elementary and secondary schools without the prior consent of the teacher and the
principal of the school disrupts and impairs the teaching process and such use is
prohibited by law. (BP 5131; Ed. Code 48901.5; 7907) Permission to use such devices
may be given to promote educational purposes.
Violation of this policy by any student may result in confiscation of the device and
further disciplinary action.
Computer Use Policy
Students are required to submit a Technology Use Guidelines form prior to using
computer or technology resources.
The use of school computers and access to the Internet is a privilege. Students who do
not follow the rules may be disciplined and may lose computer privileges. When
students use school computers, they agree to follow the directions of teachers and school
staff, rules of the school and school district, and rules of any computer network they
access.
For further information of the TRUSD’s computer use policy, please refer to the district’s
2014-2015 Student and Family Handbook.
Dances
Attendance at dances is a privilege, not a right. In order to attend a Rio Linda High
School dance, students must meet two criteria:
1. Have a 2.0 GPA as of the last designated grade report.
2. Have 9 or less instances of unexcused tardies/lates/absences in the designated
quarter.
Unsafe, lewd or vulgar dancing is not permitted. Here are some basic rules for every
dance:
1. No “freak” dancing/dancing that imitates sexual activity
2. Other than shoes or jackets or other wraps, clothing may not be removed.
3. No use or possession of controlled substances at any school activity.
There are more rules on our website under Information/Resources >>> School Dances
16
Students who have to be removed from any dance may be barred from attending the next
dance. Any student who uses alcohol or any other controlled substance prior to
coming to a dance or at a school dance will be suspended and barred from any
remaining school dances for that school year.
Detention
Students may be assigned lunch time and after school detention by Administration and/or
an Attendance and Behavior Assistant for violating school rules. Students who fail to
serve assigned detention will be subject to further disciplinary action.
Loitering
No loitering in the restrooms, parking lots, autos, bike areas, and areas outside of
classrooms or other buildings.
Public Romance
Passionate embracing or kissing, petting, and other intimate gestures are not considered
appropriate on campus or at any off campus school event. Students will be asked to stop.
Repeated violation may result in parent contact and disciplinary action.
School and Personal Property
Students are responsible for textbooks, library books, and other school property loaned to
them. If textbooks, library books, CDs or other school equipment are lost, damaged, or
stolen, the student is held responsible until the obligation is cleared. Grades, diplomas,
and extra-curricular activities will be withheld from students with outstanding
obligations. Rio Linda High School and Twin Rivers Unified School District are not
responsible for personal property brought to school sites or school activities.
Parents or guardians will be held financially liable for acts of willful misconduct,
including vandalism, by their minor child. Students known to be involved may be
suspended and/or expelled and subject to criminal charges. In addition, our district may
withhold a student’s grades, diploma, and transcript until restitution for damages is made
17
or, if the minor and parents are unable to pay, upon completion of the performance of
voluntary work in lieu of monetary payment for damages.
Parents or guardians will be liable for all property belonging to the district that is loaned
to the minor student and not returned.
Student Identification
All students will be issued a free student ID card at the beginning of the year during
registration for the purpose of checking out library materials and for entrance to school
dances, as well as for student discounts. Students are required to carry their ID card at all
times and must identify themselves to any and all staff members (or parent volunteers) on
campus or at any school function.
Unauthorized Presence on Another Campus
All students are to be present on the campus in which they are enrolled. Only in unusual,
pre-arranged, and pre-approved circumstances would students visit another campus in the
school district during school hours. If approved, the student is required to register/check-
in at the main office of that school. Students who do not abide by this regulation may be
suspended.
Searches of Students and Property
As necessary to protect the health, safety and welfare of students and staff, school
officials may search students, their property and/or district property under their control
and may seize illegal, unsafe and prohibited items. The Board of Trustees requires that
discretion, good judgment and common sense be exercised in all cases of search and
seizure. (Ed. Code 49050)
Canine detection units will be utilized by TRUSD to conduct random searches of
belongings on the campus, in the classrooms, lockers, and vehicles.
Emergency Information Sheets
Students are required to have on file in the main office:
1. Parent(s) or Guardian(s) home and work telephone numbers.
2. Name(s) and phone number(s) of person(s) authorized by parent or guardian to be
called in case of accident or illness.
3. Emergency instructions in case of accident or illness.

community participation in and support of student opportunities in academics, activities,
arts, and athletics. The primary purpose of KORT is to benefit students attending Rio
Linda High School through collaboration with students, school staff, and community

school, it a greatly increases the school culture and the performance of those and other
students.

STUDENT / TEACHER CONCERNS If a student or parent has a concern about a class or teacher, the counselor or
administrator will suggest the following:
1. At the first sign of difficulty, the student will contact the teacher. This will
make the teacher aware of the student’s concerns or frustrations and will
facilitate getting additional help from the teacher.
2. If the student feels he/she has tried the suggestions of the teacher, a parent
conference should be scheduled. This can be done by contacting the teacher
either by phone or email (easily accessed via our school website). The
purpose is to determine what the teacher, parent and student can do to help the
student perform better in the class.
3. If the student and teacher have both tried to improve the student’s progress in
the class and concerns still exist, the parents can appeal for an administrative
review with an assistant principal. The assistant principal will then meet with
the parent, student, teacher, and counselor to assess the situation to determine
if further action is warranted. This process is designed with the intent of
placing responsibility on the student. If necessary, parent and teacher
conferences will improve communication and set a more positive learning
environment for the student.
