Roadways should welcome pedestrians and
cyclists and offer multiple options for public
transportation. To generate more social space,
traffic should operate in only one direction in
busy zones.
All vital components of greater Hempstead
(parks, preserves, learning institutions) will be
accessible by proposed light rail, and pedestrian
and bike lane systems.

Principal roadways can infiltrate rainwater through the ground, clean it, and
direct it to a recycling facility in the village. To provide shade and seasonal color,
native tree species will flank the sides of the roadway.

the local cafe or rummaging for a great

An inter-neighborhood tram

The Art of Industry
Charming 1920-1950s homes in
the Village of Hempstead are
in abundance and are perfectly
suitable for a business. Through
rezoning and retrofitting, an
unoccupied home can transform
into a business that can serve
the community in which its part
of. The type of business can
vary; a locally owned restaurant
that serves seasonal dishes
using only the freshest produce
from a nearby urban farm, a
market, a clothing boutique.
Steadily, the sprawling
suburban landscape will
become urban as more business
adapt.
Many urban cities have an art
district/colony or visual and
performing arts institution that
supports its creative dwellers.
Most of these zones share a
commonality with one another
-- unoccupied warehousespace.
In the southern region of
the villages downtown, just
outside the 1/2 mile radius
boundary, lies vast real estate
ideal for the future makings
of Hempsteads very own art
district. And, conveniently,
there is very little that needs to
be done to move forward such
a district -- as this environment
shouldnt be hyped, franchised
and overdone. What makes an
art district so appealing is the
industrial and unfinished feel
of the place. With additionto bike lanes and depaving of
portions of the road to make
way for vegetation, the art
district can form holistically to
the needs of its artists.

The venue could foster an awareness of the rich c
diversity of the village.
A method of reusing a big box retail store is to us
first floor as parking for a mixed-use developmenabove. The proposed development should be a st
community itself with community-minded indepe
businesses. There should be pedestrian linkages
sides of the site and public t ransit close by. Rain
should be captured, stored and reused on site. So
can keep the community running green.

The Plains Restoration Project will
be the heart of the revitalization
of the Village of Hempstead. The
entire community can participate in
the restorative efforts of the plains.
Local schools can use the sites as
outdoor classrooms where they
can learn about Native Americanethnobotany, preserving globally
rare endangered plants and wildlife,
and stewardship of the land. A Trail
systems and interpretive signage
will be provided.
As part of the Plains Restoration
Project, historic Horse Brook will
be naturalized. By de-channelizing
the waterway at Brierley Park and
stabilizing the water course with a
constructed riparian environment,
the park can be a demonstrationof the historic habitat and point
of interest for locals and visitors.
This micro-habitat will increase
biodiversity and can be a hot
spot for urban ecological study,
experimentation and research.

Re-purpose the land where an
auto mall currently exists into an
expansive urban farming laboratory
and wind power grid. Pour multiple
layers of topsoil onto the asphalt
and grow a variety of fruits and
vegetables, partake in beekeeping,
and raise livestock. Involve localstudents of all ages and make urban
farming an integral part of their
education. Teach the importance
of locally grown sustenance and
help them to garner a self-invested
relationship between person and
food.
A local bazaar/marketplace
neighboring the urban farm can take
part in the distribution of goods by
local vendors, including food, arts
and crafts.
