Careers Week EXPO transforms school gymnasiumBy Bryon Little I Careers and Vocational Education Coordinator
Careers Week 2019, saw students participate in a range of different activities and events. Early in the week, the Year 10 students travelled to North Regional TAFE where they selected four different tours to take part in. Tours outlined a range of different vocations and training opportunities which will enable students to make well-informed decisions when it comes to their subject selections for Year 11. We also had a guest speaker address the Work Studies classes. Michael McLevie shared his incredible journey on how he has achieved having the biggest Minecraft trading site on the internet (with over 168 000 members). Towards the end of the week saw a panel of six keynote speakers address our Year 10 students and share their experiences in each of their varied vocations. Students were then able to question and interact with each of the speakers. Careers Week climaxed with the West Kimberley Careers Expo. Our Year 7-12 students were joined during the day by students from Fitzroy Crossing, Derby, the Broome Cluster Primary Schools and St Mary's College to explore the Expo, which this year was held in the gymnasium and out on Haynes Oval. Approximately 45 exhibitors were set up for this year’s Expo, making it the biggest yet. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students who attended.
Mathew Burt I PrincipalWelcome to Term 2 and a very special welcome to our new families and students who have joined the school. We are very excited to welcome new staff to the school this term filling some very important and much-needed positions. Our new appointments include Ms Pethick as our School Chaplain, Ms Hustler-Sweeney as our BGA class teacher and Ms Armstrong as our Aboriginal Education Coordinator. While Term 2 is another busy term with Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN, Year 10, 11 and 12 exams, Year 12 Externally Set Tasks and of course Kimberley Cup and Country Week, I’m sure it will be equally successful. Our students are incredible and as always thank you for your continued support. Have a wonderful Term 2.

ANZAC Day 2019By Mat Burt I Principal
I was extremely proud of our student representatives at this year's ANZAC Day dawn service at Bedford Park. The address from our Year 12 student Mollie Bayliss on behalf of the next generation was moving and heartfelt focusing on qualities of the ANZAC spirit and connecting this to our school motto – perseverance and integrity. Damar Isherwood was confident and proud in her exceptional rendition of the national anthem. I was extremely impressed with the conduct of our student council members in attendance who, yet again, represented our school with pride on such a significant day in Australian military history.
Representing Western Australia on the Premier's Anzac Student TourBy Bree Potter I Year 10 Student
Winner of the recent essay-based Premier's ANZAC Tour competition and one of 10 Western Australian ambassadors Bree Potter writes in her own words of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity visiting Vietnam over the April school holidays:During the Term 1 school holidays, I had the amazing opportunity, along with nine other lucky Western Australian students, to travel to Vietnam. As part of the Premier's ANZAC Student Tour, we visited several towns and cities, the main ones being Ho Chi Minh, Vung Tua, Da Nang and Hue, Hoi An and finally to Hanoi. These distinct and truly confronting cities were home to many key locations of the tour; Binh Bah, The Long Tan Memorial Cross, and the Cu Chi Tunnels which all helped guide our understanding of the different elements of war in Australian history. The trip was one of the most eye-opening and exciting experiences of my life and a priceless opportunity I am very thankful to have had.
The purpose of the Premier’s ANZAC Student Tour is to educate the young generation in order to continue our nation’s long-lasting commitment to commemorating the contributions of Australian service personnel who fought in past conflicts. In doing so, the tour exposed us to many contrasting and independent perspectives
of war. We were constantly confronted with stories, images and locations which depicted the harsh realities of Australian service personnel and we were lucky enough to be informed about these by Mr Brian Cleaver, a Vietnam War veteran. It was incredible to learn about Australian war history as well as Vietnamese culture and history with a variety of different viewpoints and perspectives that influenced my understanding. The opportunity to visit these unique, historic and culturally rich places is one I will continue to cherish. It has inspired me to travel
and further indulge in and educate myself about Australian involvement in international affairs and peacekeeping throughout history. The Premier’s ANZAC Student Tour has played a key part in further developing my understanding and significantly shaping my perspective of not only Australian involvement,
but both the historical and cultural interconnections war creates and its individual and global effects. Without a place on this tour, I would not have been exposed to such perspectives and defining experiences.

Great news our School Chaplain is backMrs Angela Pethick is very excited and grateful to be joining our school Student Services team to fill a valuable position as School Chaplain. Chaplaincy is a service that is close to her heart. "It is a role where all of my time and energy is dedicated to listening to and supporting students, staff and parents with compassion and care at the core," says Mrs Pethick. She joins two other School Chaplains currently working in two Broome primary schools and is part of a team of 11 School Chaplains across the Kimberley. This term, she will be focusing on building important relationships and looking for practical ways to support and promote positive wellbeing in our school community. Mrs Pethick's working days at school are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. She can be directly contacted on 9195 3117 or by email: [email protected].
Food fun program encourages a healthy appetiteBy Carolyn Davies I Food Technology Teacher
How many vegetables have you eaten today? Did you know that most Australians do not meet the requirements of five serves of vegetables every day? Students have this term been relishing a delicious and nutritious new healthy eating program. The ‘Share It’ program aims to focus on improving childhood nutrition outcomes and encourage discussions around important food related issues. Over eight weeks the lower school food technology classes will be visited by guest speakers, have opportunity to try new recipes and taste new ingredients. This pilot program kicked off in the first week of this term with the Canteen Festival and the Harvest Table where students prepared tastings of a range of recipes that were then sampled by school students and staff during recess. Voting was encouraged for the best options of the Specials on the new Term 2 Canteen Menu
at the newly rebranded school canteen 'Megabytes'. In the spirit of sharing the main highlight of the program will be the Kimberley Share It
Experience in Week 6 when Broome Senior High School will host a two-day culinary camp inviting other schools to share their culinary experiences. So the fridge is full of delicious and colourful vegetables, fruit and local produce, it is time to ‘Share It’.
Student swimmers recognised at Arafura GamesBy Bree Watt I Head of Learning Area, Health and Phys Ed
Broome Senior High School would like to recognise the fantastic efforts of the following students: Tallara Cook, Talia Wilkinson and Gemma Kent at the Arafura Games held over four days recently in Darwin. The girls represented Broome Barracudas and Western Australia in the event where they competed not only against the Northern Territory’s best swimmers but swimmers from all across Australia and Northern Territory's closest International neighbours. The girls had a very successful event with a 21-medal haul between them. Talia and Gemma each went home with nine medals, and Tallara Cook with three medals. Congratulations on being the best you can be.

UWA Year 12 Leadership campBy Tim Gray I Follow the Dream Coordinator
For over ten years the Shenton House Aboriginal Student Support program based at the University of Western Australia has hosted Broome Senior High School students with an interest in tertiary study post-graduation. The camp which draws students from public and private schools across the state focuses on ensuring students are empowered to consider university education as a viable alternative for them.
This year our school was fortunate to have seven students selected to attend the trip held in the April school holidays. The cohort was supported at the Perth campus by ex- Broome Senior High School students Tamara Albert, Joseph Torres and Jasper John, who are all currently engaged in Degree courses at the university. The Follow the Dream Program looks forward to continuing to encourage Year 12 members to participate in this camp well into the future.
Broome Senior High School students can now download and install the full MS Office 365 Pro Plus suite on up to 15 personally owned devices at no charge. Download through

Broome Senior High School plays an instrumental role in Town Beach redevelopment projectCeramics teacher Naomie Hatherley has been working closely with Mudmap Studios director Vanessa Margetts to produce over 600 tiles decorated by students from our School and members of the Broome community. 400 of the orange and turquoise tile masterpieces will be selected to decorate a key wall to be featured in the newly redeveloped Town Beach. Each tile has been hand-rolled and cut, bisque-fired and glaze-fired in the school's state-of-the-art ceramics room in our Arts building. Community members were invited to decorate a tile at the Chinatown Christmas festival last year, the Drop-in Centre and during the Australia Day celebrations this year.
It is hoped that the remaining 200 tiles produced by students and community members will be re-used elsewhere either in the community or as part of Broome Senior High Schools’ new build.
