Qweak Status & Plans for Beam (10’)

• Status (Greg Smith)– Qweak Run II not a new setup. A continuation…– Run I major down times predominantly:

• QTOR PS, DS beamline vacuum, Target pump– 6MSD used to harden these systems

• And perform maintenance, make improvements to other systems

• Plans for Beam (Roger Carlini)– Plans for 1st week (11/11/11)– Plans for remaining time

Page 19: 6MSD Weekly Scheduling Meeting - Jefferson Lab We… · 6) Meeting Recap and Action Items (All) ..... 5 mins . 6MSD: Glance back & look ahead Fulvia Pilat 6MSD Meeting October 12,

• Compton: plan to finish work this week– Doubled gain with new mirrors to ~1.6 kW– Improved e-det effi (4th plane, better cables, etc.)– PbW photon detector gain stabilized

• Moller: unexpected large quad problem– Q3 boneyard, Q2 Q3. Beamline reassembled. – Pull vacuum & stack Pb after Moller tgt swap. – Survey & alignment next week.

• Pivot halo target:– Being re-designed for hor. offset beam

• Improved cavity BCMs:– New electronics on track (Musson, Allison)– 2 new cavities added to beamline– 4 new cables pulled

• Hall C/Qweak appear on track to be ready for beam well before the end of this month, thanks to the hard work and dedication of many people, including: – Dave Hamlette & the radcon group, Neil Wilson &

company, Rick Taylor & installation group, Greg Marble, Rick Gonzales & the vacuum group, survey & alignment group, Dave Meekins & the target group, Omar Garza, John Musson & Trent Allison, the magnet test group, Kelly Mahoney & Rich Wright, Joe Beaufait, and many others.

– And of course Andy Kenyon & our Hall C techs!• Thanks to all of you who have helped & continue

to help us be ready on time! THANK YOU!

Thanks!

Plan for Nov. 11th – 19th• Qweak indeed wants to take 1-pass beam between Nov. 11-19 if

possible.

• The request is to receive (after initial tune-up beam) approximately 2 days of low intensity (200pA-10nA) running for our tracking measurements. We need to do this first before activation of the drift chamber region causes higher than ideal leakage currents in our wire chambers.

• We would then like a couple of days of transverse running with high current beam ~150uA's - using both horizontal and vertical transverse setups - say 1 day of each + mini-spin dance.

• After which we would like to go into a mode as close as possible to "production" - high current with 100% long. polarization. Some of this period would be used to allow Jay to briefly study the front end position corrector feedback system and the experiment to characterize how close we are setup to a "parity quality beam" condition.

Page 28: 6MSD Weekly Scheduling Meeting - Jefferson Lab We… · 6) Meeting Recap and Action Items (All) ..... 5 mins . 6MSD: Glance back & look ahead Fulvia Pilat 6MSD Meeting October 12,

Goals for Nov. 20th ‐….

• Production Running– >50% of time at 150µA to 180µA on LH2

– >25% time:• 2 shifts/week on Moller running (@ a few µA’s)• 1µA to 100µA on on Al• 200pA to 100nA for tracking (~once a month)• Some specialty configurations – transverse, spin

dance, …– <25% Exp + Acc down time

Silica is an OSHA National Emphasis Program due to its hazards of long term lung diseases. Jack-hammering is known to release silica dust.

The jack-hammering job was begun with some water on the operation but no respiratory protection (not ID’d in AHA) & had some visible dust. Blowers supplied some air to the area. After the lack of a respirator was presented to the contractor, they assigned respirator qualified workers.

Air samples the next day ultimately indicated potential over-exposure due to inadequate level of respiratory protection. Contractor reassessed respirator used to better type for future work.

This potential exposure became a reportable event.
