St. Catherine de Ricci (1522-1589)

Alexandrina was born in Florence, and took the name of Catherine upon entering religious life. From her earliest infancy she manifested a great love of prayer, and in her sixth year, her father placed her in

the convent of Monticelli in Florence, where her aunt, Louisa de Ricci, was a nun. She entered the Dominican nuns at Prat at age fourteen. At twenty-five she became prioress. She corresponded with St. Philip Neri and, while still living, she appeared to him in Rome in a miraculous manner. She is famous for the "Ecstacy of the Passion" which she experienced every Thursday from noon until Friday at 4:00 p.m. for twelve years. After a long illness she passed away in 1589.

St. Angilbert (c. 760-814) Angilbert was a courtier of the emperor Charlemange charged with the duty of defending the French coast from Danish invaders. Before going to battle, he went to pray at the tomb of the abbot Saint Riquier, vowing to become a monk if his army was victorious. In answer to his prayers, there arose a severe thunderstorm with so much lightning, hail, and rain that it dispersed the Danes, leading to their defeat. Angilbert entered the monastery of Centula (Saint-Riquier), later becoming its abbot. Having observed in his own monastic life a rigorous schedule of prayers and psalms throughout the day and night, he introduced in his abbey the practice of "laus perennis," the perpetual recitation of the Psalms, twenty-four hours a day, by relays of monks. One hundred sixty years after Angilbert's death, his body was found to be incorrupt.

Bl. Archangela Girlani (1460-1494) She was born in Trino, in northern Italy, in 1460, and baptized Eleanor. Though planning to become a Benedictine nun, she was thwarted in her desire by her horse - the animal refused to carry her to the convent. She then became a Carmelite in Parma, Italy, taking the name Archangela, being and made her profession at the age of eighteen. Named prioress of the convent, Archangela founded a new Carmel in Mantua. She was gifted with ecstasies and levitation and was reported to have performed miracles. Archangela died on January 25,1494, and was beatified in 1864 by Pope Pius IX.

(d. 869, 884) These two Greek brothers became missionaries, teachers, and patrons of the Slavic peoples. Cyril became a monk, and Methodius a priest and eventually a bishop after Cyril’s death.

Cyril’s first work was to invent an alphabet, still used in some Eastern liturgies. His followers probably formed the Cyrillic alphabet. Together they translated the Gospels, the psalter, Paul’s letters and the liturgical books into Slavonic, and composed a Slavonic liturgy, highly irregular then. Methodius continued their mission work for 16 years after Cyril’s death.
