Thank You, Denise Crawford!

Dear friends in Christ,

August 31st marked a milestone in the life of St. Elizabeth’s, specifically, Denise Crawford retired after serving 17

years as our parish administrative assistant.

Denise has played an extremely important role in the day-to-day life of our parish office. Not only has she been the

face and voice of St. E’s for our many office visitors and callers, but she has also managed a lot of behind-the-scenes opera-

tions that are vital in the life of any parish. Her professionalism, commitment, faithfulness, and courtesy have been true bless-

ings to us all.

On behalf of our entire St. Elizabeth’s parish family, I wish to thank Denise for her generous service to St. E’s.

We’ll certainly miss her, and we wish her all the best in this new stage of her life.

With kind personal regards, I am

Sincerely in Christ, Msgr. Bill Parent

We regularly accept donations toward flowers each week-

end in memory or honor of someone, or to recognize special

anniversaries. See the notebook on the table in the Commons

to sign up for a weekend of your choice, or contact Kathy in

the parish office. Arrangements are $75 each and you may

order up to three.

Monday — Labor Day Holiday Monday, September 4th, is the Labor Day holiday. Our

only parish Mass will be celebrated at 11:30am that day and

we hope you will join us. The parish office will be closed

and will re-open on Tuesday. Have a safe and happy holiday

weekend as we celebrate this traditional end to the summer!

Parish Office Hours Shifting Beginning September 5th, our parish office will open at

9am (rather than 8) and will close at 5pm (rather than 4). We

hope this shift in hours will better serve our parish commu-

nity.

December Trip “Home for the Holidays” Our December day trip this year will be just a wee bit

north of here as we travel to Baltimore’s Joseph Meyerhoff

Symphony Hall for the Boston Symphony’s ‘Home for the

Holidays’ program on Saturday, December 16th. Iconic fa-

vorites like ‘Hark, the Herald Angels Sing’ and ‘O Holy

Night’ will be featured, as will some fun-loving, tap dancing

Santas. After attending this 3pm matinee, we’ll head to The

Rusty Scupper for a delicious dinner overlooking the Inner

Harbor. Pick up a registration flyer in the Commons or

download from our website.

Oberammergau in 2020??? In 1633, when the Bubonic Plague was devastating the

population of Europe, the residents in the little village of

Oberammergau in Bavaria, Germany gathered and prayed to

God to please save their families and friends from this

spreading death. They vowed to God that if he would grant

them this prayer, they would forever more remember the life

and death of Jesus through the staging of a play of His Passion.

The number of deaths of the local villagers fell greatly that year

and true to their word, in 1634, the first play was produced.

The tradition was for the play to occur every 10 years — and so

it has (with a couple of exceptions, e.g. WWII), though in

1680, the village moved the date to the first year of every cen-

tury. Thus, the next time this play will be performed is in 2020.

We took a group from St. Elizabeth’s to Germany for this play

in 2010 and it was such a profound experience for all, that we

would be happy to organize a group for 2020, if there is inter-

est. There is such a high level of popularity for this event that it

is held daily from mid-May through the first week of October,

but the space does fill up quickly so tour operators are begin-

ning their sales now (individuals cannot purchase tickets to the

play until April of that year, on a space available basis; the bulk

of sales is done through groups). The play is shown daily, is 8

hours long with a 3 hour intermission half way through, in an

open-air theatre seating 4700 people. The 2000 actors are all

St. E’s Ministry Fair—September 9/10

Your Time and Talent is vital to the parish. There are so many ways to get involved.

Mark your calendars!

Stop in the Commons after all the Masses on September 9 and 10 to see how you can apply your time

and talent—there’s something to suit everyone’s interests!

Oberammergau residents (a requirement to even audition), and

is incredibly well done. The sheer organization of this event is

fascinating and no groups or individuals are allowed to stay in

Oberammergau or the surrounding villages for more than 2

nights which is the way they’ve set it up to accommodate all

the guests wishing to attend the play. Thus, we would likely

pair a planned visit to Oberammergau with a visit to northern

Italy to round out (or begin) our trip. If you would be sincerely

interested in hearing more about a specific itinerary, with an

eye toward making this trip, please contact Kathy (kswartz

@stelizabethchurchmd.org / 301-881-1380). If there seems to

be enough interest to put together a group, the planning will

begin! (This would likely be a September trip so as to take ad-

vantage of the best chances for good weather and cheaper pric-

es.)

Separated and Divorced Spiritual Group St. Elizabeth’s Separated and Divorced Spiritual Support Group will meet Wednesday, September 6th, at 7:30 pm in the school library. We’ll discuss Chapter 2 of the book, Rebuilding When Your Relationship Ends, by Drs. Bruce Fisher and Robert Alberti. We offer a safe, Catholic communi-ty in which members can discuss the challenges of separation and divorce and the steps to rebuilding their lives. Some of our members are newly separated or divorced, while others have completed the divorce recovery process. Members share only what they are comfortable sharing and all discussions are treated as confidential. We welcome members of all ag-es. For more information, please contact co-facilitators Linda Luisi (lcluisi@ verizon.net) and Roberta Mancini ([email protected])

Catechists Needed Catechists are needed to teach in several grades for the 2017

-2018 school year. Sessions for grades pre-school through eight

take place three Sunday mornings a month and begin on Sep-

tember 17. If you are called to this ministry that is so vital

to the future of our Church, please contact Mary Theresa

Heneghan, Director of Elementary Christian Formation, at

[email protected] or 301.881.1380.

No experience is necessary; training and support are pro-

vided. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity to serve.

Book Club St. Elizabeth‘s Book Club will begin for the 2017-2018

year. On Monday, Sept 11, 2017 at 7:00pm in the Front

Meeting Room. The book to be discussed is, Walking with

God by Tim Gray and Jeff Cavins. It is an interesting book

that makes a difficult subject easy to understand. Those

who like to read and discuss books, come and join us. All

are welcome. Questions e-mail : trishhohman @Yahoo.com

Grab Your Blue & White and

Join us for the Back to School Picnic

Friday, September 22nd from 5-7pm This year, show your St. Elizabeth spirit by wearing blue

and white at the annual St. Elizabeth Back to School Picnic!

The St. Elizabeth Home School Association (HSA) will once

again host this event from 5-7pm at the St. Elizabeth school

field. All St. Elizabeth families are invited for a two-hour, fun

-filled evening of fun, food and friends. Families may bring

their own food or support the school and purchase dinner

from Piasano’s Pizza. Rain date is scheduled for September

22nd from 5-7pm. We love our volunteers and this year, our

student volunteers will receive a special ‘thank you’. If you

would like to volunteer, please contact us: Back2School-

[email protected]. Hope to see you there!

Parental and Spousal Bereavement

Support Group St. Elizabeth Bereavement Ministry will offer an eight

week bereavement support group series for adults who have

experienced the death of a parent, spouse or significant other.

The Fall evening series will meet at St. Elizabeth Catholic

Church, 917 Montrose Road in Rockville on Wednesday eve-

nings, 7–8:30pm, from September 20 through November 8.

(A morning series is planned to start in January 2018). There

is no fee but registration is required. Space is strictly limited

so call early. To register call Deacon Kevin Byrne (301-279-

5962), or Claudia McAuliffe (301-881-1457).

Homebound Ministry Seeks Volunteers Each Sunday volunteers from St. Elizabeth take the Eu-

charist to parishioners who are unable to come to church, and

also to Catholic residents of the Hebrew Home for which our

parish is sacramentally responsible. At this time we need

more volunteers! We provide training and our volunteers

serve on teams so you are committed only once a month and

team members act as substitutes on days you are unavailable.

Please contact Pat McCarthy (301.984.0595 / pmccar-

thy@stelizabethchurch md.org) or Carmen Boston

(301.881.1380 / [email protected]).

Doughnut Volunteers Doughnuts will soon be available (yay!) so we’re lining up

our volunteers to assist with providing those after our Sunday

morning Masses. The first weekend for doughnuts will be

September 10th. Volunteers assist with plating the doughnuts

after each Mass, and cleaning up afterward. Generally it’s 15-

20 minutes of your time at the end of Mass (longer if it’s the

7:30 or 12:15 Masses). You can pick the Mass of your choice

and individuals or families are welcome. Contact Susan Cecil

(301-770-5737 / [email protected]) if you’d like more

information or would like to join this ministry. We especially

need help for the 7:30am Mass since we lost two slots for this

over the summer and would like to have at least 4 available

so that volunteers need work no more than once per month.

Youth Ministry News

Youth Group will begin to meet on September 10, from 7-9pm in the School cafeteria, following the Life Teen Mass.

Calendars are on the tables in the Commons and will soon be available on the website.

Teens and their families are encouraged to attend our weekly Life Teen Mass on Sundays at 6:00pm. This Mass fea-

tures contemporary Christian music. We would love to have your help with ushering and lectoring at this Mass.

Our youth ministry program is always looking for and welcoming more adult volunteers to help facilitate small group

discussions along with teen leaders. These adults are needed on Sunday nights from 7:00 - 9:15pm to help run Youth

Group and must have completed the VIRTUS child protection training to participate. If you feel called to serve God’s

young church in this way, please pray about it and contact the parish office (301-881-1380 / of-

[email protected]). To complete your VIRTUS training, please be in touch with Carmen Boston

([email protected]).
