This is why we define leadership as making a positive difference in the lives of others. Our more formal senior leadership positions were announced this week following the Australian Electoral Commission’s administration of the SRC Executive election last Friday. The formal ceremony of induction will be on Tuesday, 16 October in Period 1. This will provide us with the opportunity as a school community to also formally thank the great group of SRC Executive for 2011 – 2012: Cameron East, Brittany Dionysius, Jack Margaritis, Megan Murdoch, Molly Purcell, Julia Thorpe, Dymphna van der Leij, Belinda Walsh and James Whiting. From The School Leadership TeamThere are many defi nitions of leadership used today. For us at Hillbrook we believe that as unique individuals we all possess special talents and gifts; experiences; perspectives; interests; passions; and capabilities. And, it is when each of us willingly offers ourselves to others in the community, and for the benefi t of all, that authentic and the most effective leadership can occur. Our more formal senior leadership positions were announced this week following the Australian Electoral Commission’s administration of the SRC Executive election last Friday. We look forward to the new team’s positive contribution to the community and congratulate the following Year 11 students: Isabella Boccalatte, Emily Brennan, Peter Dal Bon, Claire Gaunt, Lydia Irvine-Collins, Frazer McCabe, Dermot McNamara, Anna Swete Kelly and Sam Wilkinson. They have provided an outstanding example of leadership in action!

The Year 12 students started the week with a breakfast to thank them for their efforts in preparing for the QCST and to wish them well for the two days of testing on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Every student who wishes to receive an Overall Position [OP] has to sit for the Queensland Core Skills Test.

We are approaching the end of Term 3 with two weeks remaining, and the Year 11 students have fi nished their mini-block tests and are off to Camp or Work Experience. Work Experience remains a valuable part of the career process, especially as most students are not sure of their career path after school. Lines From The LibraryBooks & Reading

Title: My Sister’s Keeper

Author: Jodi Picoult

Genre: Social Realism

Summary: The story of a real life situation that strikes a family and how they cope through the tragedy of cancer. The book is told from all the characters different perspectives. As the journey unfolds, so does the twists and amazing experiences.

Recommendation: This is a truly amazing story and journey of a family’s life, living in a diffi cult situation with cancer. It’s a very interesting and heartfelt book that never lets you put it down and makes you so attached to the characters and makes you want to cry. Reviewed by: Lulu O’Brien

News & Special EventsAuthor and Comedian, Oliver Phommavanh, visited on Monday afternoon and spoke to the Year 8s. Oliver was very funny, a little outrageous even compared to other presenters we’ve had, and the students really enjoyed his session. Maybe they will even be inspired to consider a writing career for themselves after hearing how he became a published author. Some of the boys told me they thought he was awesome – high praise indeed!

On Friday a group of Hillbrook students accompanied Mrs Phair and Ms Lane to the schools day at Brisbane Writers Festival at SLQ. This is always a wonderful excursion for keen readers and writers. We attendedsessions with John Boyne from the UK and Australian writers Kate Forsyth, Belinda Jeffrey, John Flanagan and Alice Pung. It was voted a top day out!

The inaugural Novel T program, where parents read and share class set books alongside their children, was kicked off this week with the Year 9 novel ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ by John Boyne. We had a healthy roll up of keen parents and students on Tuesday night in the Library. Ms Lane explained the background to the selection of the book and how it is used in English classrooms. We shared our responses to the story and robust discussion of its themes. It was a very relaxed and enjoyable evening, and thanks go to Ms Lane for giving so freely of her time and expertise. I hope to see more parents and students at other Novel T events in the future.

And just for fun...Father Day Quiz answers from last week. How did you do?

1. Pride and Prejudice

2. Huckleberry Finn

3. Beauty and the Beast

4. Mr Darling (from Peter Pan)

5. Atticus Finch (from To Kill a Mockingbird)

Correction to Last Week’s PostscriptMrs Phair’s replacement in the Library is Mr Chris Griffi ths, not Woods as I mistakenly said last week. Mea culpa – it seems I really need that holiday! Chris has been in to meet Hillbrook library and teaching staff and will introduce himself to students and you next week.

I’ll catch up with you all again next term. I hope you enjoy a safe and happy September break and manage to fi t in plenty of relaxing reading time!

Happy reading!

Language is Fun!German puppetry, Bretzel, Sushi… what a week it has been for the Year 8 language students! They all enjoyed eating some culinary delights from Germany and Japan such as Bretzel (pronounced Pretzel in English) and Nori rolls. Students also enjoyed watching a bi-lingual performance, in German and English, of die SchÖne und das Tier (Beauty and the Beast). They all seemed to enjoy singing along to the song “Tier, mein kleines Tier, wo bist du? Tier, mein kleines Tier, was machst du?” (Beast my little beast, where are you, what are you doing?) The puppeteers were most impressed with the impeccable behaviour of our students, their intelligent questions and for participating well throughout the performance. Congratulations to all students and I look forward to organising this event next year. See the photos on Page 4.
