Informational
Congratulations to Ferdian “Euro” Aditama (7th grade) who placed 4rd at the
Akron Beacon Journal Regional Spelling Bee.
Congratulations to the following students who participated in the City of Akron
Holocaust Arts & Writing Contest: Jimmy Miller (8th grade) placed 3rd in the
Multimedia-Division I and Taylor Steinborn (8th grade) received an Honorable
Mention in the Visual Arts-Division I. Jimmy and Taylor will be honored at the
Holocaust Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 9th, at noon in the auditorium of the
Main Branch of the Akron-Summit County Public Library.
Congratulations to the BHS Varsity Wrestling team for placing 39th in the Ohio High
School Division I State Wrestling Tournament. Aaron Tschantz placed 4th with a 49-
5 record going into States and had an overall season record of 53 wins which is a new
school record. Vern Rowe had a 49-4 record going into States.
Congratulations to Girls’ Basketball Senior Katie Wright, who was selected to play
in the Tri-County Coaches Association on Monday, March 18th.
Congratulations to Boys’ Basketball Senior Scott Sabol, who was selected to the
Greater Akron Basketball Association and is participating in the Summit-Stark All
Star game at Malone College tonight, March 27th.
Congratulations to Boys’ Basketball Sophomore Joshua Williams, who was
selected to the 2nd Team All-Ohio Basketball Team.
Congratulations to Boys’ Football Senior Jerry Williams who is currently in Paris,
France representing the United States in the American Football World-Wide
Program. He is playing on the USA High School Select Team vs. the France U-19
National Team on March 30th.
Congratulations to the following Destination Imagination teams who placed at the
regionals and will be going to the state competition in Mt. Vernon on Saturday, April
20th: 1st Place: Magic Hunger (BEE); Babbling Landsharks, Nerd Out of Water, The
Roman Noodles, and Purple Pride (BMS); and The Bees Knees (BHS); 2nd Place:
Dioxide (BHS).

Committee Reports
Jason Ondrus gave the following Race to the Top report for March 2013.
Key Accomplishments and Challenges
FIP (Formative Instructional Practices) training at the elementary schools is
winding down.
BMS teachers involved with the FAMS grant traveled to Columbus for
training. They are finishing their ePortfolio entries and beginning to work on
their final projects.
Shelly Habegger and Phil Hodanbosi continue to provide formative
assessment professional development to teachers at BMS.
OTES (Ohio Teacher Evaluation System) – Members of the Evaluation
Committee went through the 3 day OTES training in March. They also met
last week to plan May 24, waiver day, where OTES and SLO training will be
provided to staff.
Our Stocktake meeting was held on March 15. Steve Ramos was impressed
with our RttT team. He was so impressed that he even stated if he ever goes
looking for another job, he would apply here because we seemed to be the
perfect district.

Regular Meeting March 27, 2013 Barberton Middle School Five members of the RttT team attended the Connecting the Dots Conference
in Columbus on March 22. The members gained valuable information about
the PARCC assessments, Technology Readiness Tool and SLOs.
BMS science teachers in grades 6-8 met with Missi Zender at the SCESC to
work on their science maps on March 22.

The floor was opened for comments from the public. Mr. George Krska addressed the Board
regarding his concerns about joining the Akron City Series League. He gave the Board a
handout with a list of his concerns and information which compared Barberton to the City
Series League.

Superintendent’s Business – Mrs. Patricia Cleary
(077/13) MOTION was made by Masson second by Liddle to approve the following
Memorandum of Agreement between the Barberton City Schools District Board of
Education (“Board”) and the Barberton Education Association (“BEA”)/OEA/NEA.
A. To approve the following Memorandum of Agreement between the Barberton
City Schools District Board of Education (“Board”) and the Barberton Education
Association (“BEA”)/OEA/NEA.
This Memorandum of Understanding is entered into on the 27
th day of March 2013, by and
between the Barberton City School District Board of Education (“Board”) and the Barberton
Education Association (“Association”), and modifies the Negotiated Agreement which is in effect
from June 29, 2011 through June 28, 2014, in the following respect. This modification will
become effective upon the approval date in February and will become a part of the Negotiated
Agreement.
Article VIII – Compensation
N. Compensation Schedule for Elementary Additional Duty
1. The allotment for each elementary building for elementary additional duty
compensation shall be forty percent (40%) of the BA-0 salary schedule. In addition,

compensation amounts indicated:

(079/13) To approve a grant entitled, CNC Routing – Let Me Try It, submitted by Mr.
David Kaser/STEM Teacher to the Barberton Community Foundation in the amount of
$11,995 for Barberton Middle school.
(080/13) To approve a grant entitled, Elementary Technology for the New Generation
of Learners, submitted by Superintendent Patti Cleary in the amount of $60,400 to the
Barberton Community Foundation for increase technology at the K-4 level to prepare
students for the Third Grade Guarantee and the new State of Ohio assessments.
(081/13) To approve a grant entitled, Roll Out the Red Carpet – It’s the Academy
Awards for Books, submitted by Mrs. Andrea Tomer in the amount of $25,000 to the
GAR Foundation for Barberton Middle School.
(082/13) To approve a grant entitled, Third Grade Guarantee Prep – Barberton Style,
submitted by Dr. Shelly Habegger and Mrs. Sandy Chisnell in the amount of $12,320 to
the GAR Foundation for Barberton Elementary School East.
