RODGERS & HART - A UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP Richard Rodgers was exposed to music at such and early age that by the time he was six, he had taught himself to play the piano with both hands. His parents and grandparents took him every Saturday to a matinee downtown or at the 125th St. Theater and thus began his dedication to the "musical world of glamour and beauty" he had never known existed. After writing scores for two high school productions, he was encouraged by Phillip Leavitt to contact Lorenz Hart, a Columbia graduate, who could quote Shakespeare by the page, was a passionate theater goer, loved good music and who had high hopes of becoming a writer. They met in 1918 and the creative union was immidiate. Hart admired Rodgers' easy gift for pleasi ng melody and Rodgers admi red the refinement and good taste of Hart's lyrics. Their collaboration lasted from 1918 to 1943 and produced 31 stage musicals and 10motion picture scores. Of their first 17shows, 7were major successes, 10 were failures. Of their final 10 shows, 8 of the 10 were highly successful with 7 smash hits coming in succession.
Lorenz Hart revolutionized lyric writing; he took what was once a functional commodity for a melody and charged it with wit, imagination and charm. Rodgers & Hart were leaders in thei r field, not followers. Every show had its own idea, plan, strategy and execution.
Rodgers was reserved, methodical, responsible and professional. Hart, on the other hand, was erratic, irresponsible, careless and moody. They grew apart gradually during the late 30's when it became obvious that Hart was a deeply disturbed person. When Rodgers confronted his partner with the professional problems caused by his alcoholism and irresponsible behavior, Hart just said, "I've never really understood why you've put up with me all these years." Then Larry Hart walked out, Rodgers cried and it was over. Larry Hart died in 1943, just months after the opening of Oklahoma".

RAY TONEY - After his successful directorial task of "Perfectly Frank", we welcome Ray back for an encore with this delightful revue of some wonderful Rodgers & Harttunes. A familiarpersonalityto local community theater, Ray is best remembered at WVlOfor his portrayals of Jerry Cohan in "George M" and Pooch in "Good News." He has directed TV commercials and staged and choreographed several musical revues in the Orient as well as in the US. He choreographed ,"F.inian's Rainbow" and WVlO's "Kiss Me, Kate", then teamed with wife, Barbara to choregraph WVlO's "Pal Joey" and SDG's "70, Girls 70". The recipient of several awards, he gave memorable performances in local productions of "Mr Roberts", "Marathon 33", "Sugar" and "Finian's Rainbow". An excellent composer in his own right, Ray hopes to someday have his songs published. We're betting on him reaching that goal, but in the meantime, we'll be happy to utilize his talents in any capacity.
JEAN NARUNSKY - Jean is well-known to our audiences for she has been Music Director for several wvt,o productions, including "Camelot", "South Pacific" and "Good News". Since she holds a degree in Music Education and plays the French Horn, she has often been a member of orchestra when she waS not. Music Director. Her latest staff position as Music Director was for Sunnyvale Community Players' "Damm Yankees". She also directed their orchestra for "Pajama Game", "West Side Story" and "Carousel". Jean is currently involved with the "WilD CANARY", a women's jazz group, so watch for this billing and catch their act when you can. We're glad to have Jean and her terrific sence of humor back on staff.
GLADIE TUSCHER - When you have a winning combination like Ray & Gladie, you stick with it, so we are very pleased Gladie agreed to work on another musical revue. A member of WVlO's "The Overtures" and their Music Di rector for many years, Gladie is well known in the area, especially to the patrons of EI Camino Opera where her diversified talents of soprano, pianist, music director and producer have all been instrumental in the success of their operattas, "The Desert Song" and was the lovely voice of Nimue in "Camelot". We are very grateful that she accepted this opportunity to create such a great sound from the Rodgers & Hart score.
MARCIA BELL - A newcomer to West Valley Light Opera, Marcia received a music scholarship to Liberty Baptist College, lynchburg, VAand earned her BS in English/Speech. A recent college graduate, she is a novice in community theater, but an experienced performer as part of a traveling music/drama college team which gave theatrical presentations all over the US. Her team appeared in major Civic Centers, on the steps of the Capitol, on the Grand Ole Opry House stage and' many other notable sites. Marcia is currently a technical instructor of Electronics CAD for the Calma Co. and her ambition is to work for a Computer Science or EE Degree and do some freelance writing. She enjoys reading, writing, running and hiking in her spare time. Attention all you single guys - this lovely gal is single, too!
MARGARET BERGESON - Margaret makes her debut on a community theater stage here in California. She hails from the Midwest where she attended Marygrove College and Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She was heard on radio in Detroit and sang daily on a Detroit TV show. When her husband was transferred to California three years ago, Margaret joined the Sacred Heart Church choir and started the "Gold Dust Diggers", the Saratoga Newcomers Singers & Dancers. Now that she has appeared on stage, we have a hunch Margaret will be heard from again!
~ DENISE CURTIS - A native of Leicester, England, Denise grew up with Englebert Humperdink and has lived in Finland, Norway,. Sweden, Denmark, France and South Africa before finaly settling in the Bay Area. Her credits include performances as a lead singer/dancer in West End London's "Cabaret Club"; in movie and TV commercials in England, Finland and South Africa; in a cabaret aboard th 'M.S. Bleheim' and completed a 10-film series of films for Finnish TV in Helsinki, Finland. The highlight of her career was an appearance with Britain's top comedian, Bob Monkhouse. Most of her family still lives in Leicester, but her son graduated this summber as a Barrister in London and her daughter graduated in Yorkshire as a nurse last December. We welcome this English lass and say that we're awfully glad this gal came so far West!
~ SANDI FERRY - Long-time members may remember this talented lady from "The Desert Song" and "The New Moon", but she's changed her name since then. She has also added a great deal of stage experience to her credits, including performances at the Gaslighter Theater; major leads in Gilbert & Sullivan Society productions of "Ruddigore", "Iolanthe", and "Utopia" and in "Shenandoah" at Montalvo. While in Washington, DC, she appeared as Marian in "Music Man" and in "Oklahoma". Sandi says her hobbies are her husband, Gary (of Channel 36 fame), reading and playing on her computer in that order! Welcome back, Sandi, we've missed your bubbly enthusiasm!
LISA K, HOWARD - This will be Lisa's second production with WVLO; she also appeared in our first revue last season, "Perfectly Frank". Her impressive list of theatrical credits includes "Cabaret" for San Jose CLO, "Side By Side By Sondheim" for CAST, "Cole" for SDG, "The Ritz" in San Francisco and most recently at the Gaslighter Theater in Campbell. A graduate of Gunderson High School, Lisa has attended West Valley College and San Jose State University and is currently Assistant Manager of Book Sales at Crown Books. Her ambition is to sing professionally, so we will watch for her name in lights and hope her dream comes true!
~ STEVE COMPLETO - Pellinore in "Camelot" was the last and finest leading role Steve had in a WVLO production, but he also appeared in "Very Good Eddie", "Sound of Music", and "Rose Marie". Before becoming a regular member of our traveling troup "The Overtures", Steve had made a hit with G&S audiences in "The Mikado", "Pirates of Penzance", "Patience", "Iolanthe", "Princess Ida", and "The Gondoliers". On this stage Steve also performed with SDG in "King & I", "Anything Goes", "Kismet", and most recently in "Cole". A sports enthusiast, he enjoys tennis, racquetball, bicycling and bowling, all in his sparetimefrom bartending in his new bar, "The Silver Fox" in Cupertino. We're delighted Steve took the

STEWART LYLE - A native Californian, Stewart returns to our stage in back-to-back musicals (hewasthedelightful butler, Drake, in "Annie"). He began his theatrical career as Sir Harry in "Once Upon a Matress" and went on to portray Thomas, an Apostle, in "Jesus Christ Superstar" and male leads in "Tomfoolery" and "Barefoot In The Park". Stewart earned his BS in Chemical Engineering from UC Berkeley and is currently a Process Engineer at National Semiconductor. His hobbies include woodworking, pets (wonder if that includes girls) books, comic book collecting, and 'Dungeons & Dragons'. His ambition is to reach Broadway and/orthe Met. We hate to lose a native, but we hope he makes it! He certainly has the
potential. ~
BRIEN TIMOTHY MAHONEY - Our audiences may not have seen Brien in "Annie", but they witnessed his choreographing talent thru the cast members. This time he has the opportunity to display his talent on our stage. But he is no stranger to performing; he has played the Artful Dodger in "Oliver", Sir Evelyn in "Anything Goes", Motel in "Fiddler" with minor roles in "Pippin", "Mame", "My Fair Lady" and most recently Legs in "Sugar". Brien has 5brother and sisters; his hobbies are dancing, Victorian architecture and archaeology and his career ambition is to work with Bob Fosse. Good luck, Brien, Fosse will surely look up to you!!!
2;} CLIFF MILLS - Another newcomer to WVLO, Cliff came to the Bay Area in 1982 to attend Graduate School at SJSU which he worked his way thru by baking pizzas and dilivering singing telegrams in a gorilla suit. But his more distinguished accomplihments include major leads in "Sound of Music", "Kiss Me Kate", "Fantasticks", "Oliver", "Apple Tree", to name just a few. Cliff has appeared as Vince in "Grease" at SJSU, Bosun in "HMS Pinafore" for G&S and as Sir Eglamour in "Two Gentlemen of Verona" for SJCLO. A chess enthusiast, he also enjoys ten nis and computers. We feel you'd do very well, Cliff, if you ever decided to 'Sing For Your Supper'!
WILLIAM S. WILSON - "Scott", as we know him, performed on ourstageas a very young boy in "Fiddler On the Roof" in 1971, then returned as a very talented and mature young man to portray Will Parker in "Oaklahorna". His most recent community theater appearance was for Sunnyvale Community Players' production of "Sugar" in the dual role of Joe/Josephine (the Tony Curtis role in the movie, "Some Like It Hot"). Another native Californian, Scott claims the highlight of his career was being paid NOTto sing at his sister's wedding. With that voice, that is hard to believe. His career ambition is to becomea mild-mannered reporter for a major metropolitan newspaper. Is this really Clark Kent in disguse?

This magnificent score includes "01' Man River", "Bill", "Can't Help Lovin' Oat Man", "Make Believe", "Why Do I Love You?" and other favorites. Performances Nov/Dec 1984
RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN REVUE - A brand new release of all those wonderful popular tunes from the major hit musicals of this history-making, song-writing duo. It has all your favorite songs from "Oaklahoma", "South Pacific", "Carousel", "King & I", "Sound of Music" and many more. Performances Feb/Mar 1985
"SUGAR" - This hilarious musical, based on the screenplay, "Some Like It Hot", relates the antics of two male musicians who witness the St. Valentine's Day massacre in Chicago and then impersonate two female musicians in an all-girl band in order to escape the mob.
