“Green” – this short word has become a

synonym for nature and eco-related topics.

Today, the word “Green” can coexist with

everything from: merchandise, fashion,

technology, food to architecture. We’ve heard

of the Green Building concept for some time

now, but not everyone knows what exactly

makes one building accepted and certified

as a green building. Let’s read the in-depth

details in this 14th issue of 8HOURS.

This volume also feature an internationally

recognised green building certification system

called LEED in Green Style column. It’s quite

interesting to know how the measurement

system works and which one of the buildings

in Thailand has been LEED qualified. But

since LEED is not the answer for all, a group

of Thai architects and its alliances have decided

to form a team to set a Thai building standard

under “Thai Green Building Institute.” Find out

the differences and similarities between the

two standards in Possibility column. Also in the

column My Space+My Design, we take you to

a renovated head office of PTT Thailand which

is modern and inspired by the five elements of

nature. The company has put the “Green” policy

into practice for more than 30 years.

In fact, the matter of who is certified in

the Green building standard isn’t important as

much as how they can maintain the standard

and make it sustainable. At the end of the day,

the good causes will return to everyone living on

and sharing this mother earth. Don’t you think?

HOUSE WITH BALLSTHE SPHERE FUNCTION

Page 7: 8Hours Vol.14

7

This is perhaps a truly stunning moment for

Asian architects for many of their works have

come into the world’s spotlight and received

internationally applause.

November of last year, Gurjit Singha

Matharoo of Matharoo Associates, was one

of the emerging Asian architects to deliver

his speech at the Bangkok Art and Culture

Centre (BACC). The renowned Indian

architect has just won the ‘Best House in

the World’ Award by Architectural Review

magazine for his design called, “House

with Balls”.

“House with Balls” – Matharoo’s

latest work – has undoubtedly boasted his

talent and soul to the world as an unusual

concrete piece of architecture has combined

modernism and Indian spirit in terms of form

and space in perfection. Began with an idea

of a client who is the owner of an aquarium

shop and a fish breeder, part of the house

was designed to be functioned as a place to

breed fish as well as to serve as a weekend

retreat. Its design is centred around four fish

breeding tanks and an observation room

which could double up as a living room.

Matharoo diminished the complex part until

every aspect of this design is set out to be

very functional, delicate and yet simple. Apart

from the long living room enclosed by the

glass tanks, the layout of the house offers

several differing views of the water bodies

whether from the bedroom space or from

any other rooms. Continuous horizontal slots

are carved into both walls, without glazing.

Instead, a system of pressed galvanised steel

shutters can be adjusted to let in light and air,

transforming the character of the space. The

shutters are operated by a complex system of

wire pulleys counterweighted with concrete

ball baubles – the cheapest counterweights

possible. The balls were specially cast by

hand and their random vertical movements

give nothing but highlight to the place. The

design doesn’t overlook the Indian ways of

life. It provides a huge outdoor space for

cattle farming and gardening as well. There

is no doubt this “House with Balls” gives us

such an adventurous and lively idea together

with function and intellectually aesthetics

in unison.

Many architectural developers have never been

much aware of the fact that misuse of construction

resources can damage environment and inappro-

priate design can increase waste consumption

of energy, including water, oil and electricity.

Until the world encounters with global warming,

“Green building” trend has gained more interest

from many organisations. The concept is a way

to promote themselves as “green” entrepre-

neurs as well as helps thecompanies save

budget on energy. Right! We’re talking about

the green building standard, LEED, which has

been accredited worldwide.

The LEED stands for “Leadership in

Energy and Environment Design” and has been

developed by USGBC (US Green Building

Council) in the United States as a rating

system device to evaluate the environmental

performance of a building and encourage

market transformation towards sustainable

design. Today, there are more than 20,000

registered projects. The LEED has various

certified standards; including LEED for New

Construction, LEED for Existing Building and

its project management, LEED for Homes,

Core & Shell and Commercial Interiors. The

LEED rating system is now in its Version 2.2

that will be using for new projects for at least

1-2 years before launching LEED Version 3

to update its standards.

In order to get the LEED certification as

a Green Building, there are 6 major areas to be

considered:

1. Sustainable sites Focus on

redeveloping of old buildings – 14 points

2. Water Efficiency Reduce the amount

of water use and encourage smarter waste water

treatment technology – 5 points

3. Energy and Atmosphere Enhance

comfort, convenience, and clean atmosphere

of the building; the use of efficient appliances,

systems and lighting in order to decrease

internal sources of pollution in the building

– 17 points

4. Materials and Resources Promote

less impact on the environment in the long run,

the reduction of waste, as well as reuse and

recycling – 13 points

5. Indoor Environment Quality

Promote the use of optional materials, for

examples carpet, paint or wood composite,

instead of natural resources – 15 points

6. Innovation and Design Process

Bonus points for projects that use a LEED

Accredited Professional on the team and also

use new and innovative technologies – 5 points

Today, there are 5 LEED-certified

building projects in Thailand:

• Energy Complex - LEED Platinum (1 of 6 buildings to get the Platinum certification in Asia) • ISB Cultural Centre - LEED Gold • InterfaceFLOR Mfg, Facility. Ext - LEED Certified (the first building in Thailand to get LEED certification) • Colgate-Palmolive Mfg. Facility (Thailand) - LEED Silver • USAID RDMA Office, Bangkok - LEED Silver

The number of points the project earns

determines the level of LEED Certification

the project receives. LEED certification is

available in four levels: Certified: 26-32

points, Silver: 33-38 points, Gold: 39-51

points, and Platinum: 52-69 points.

In fact, there are no difference between

six of the above criteria and ways that environ-

mentally-friendly people are implementing

at all. Achieving the LEED certification maybe

the best way to demonstrate that a building

project is truly “green”, but as long as all

parties – an architect, a building owner and

developers – are truly determined to stick to

the philosophyof using the optimum selections

of materials, design techniques and construction

methodology to create buildings that minimise

the negative impacts on the environment and

promote environment sustainability, it can be

counted as our own “green building” standard

as well.

PTT LITTLEBIG CHANGE

Office building renovation is nothing new to

many companies, but not to PTT Public

Company Limited. For 20 years, the company’s

headquarters has never been under any major

renovation due to limitations of the office area,

numbers of staff and cost conscious reasons.

Since the government is its major share holder,

the entire budget has to be reasonable and

wise-spending. Once the budget was approved,

it’s time for PTT’s big change. Mr. Pitipan

Tepartimargorn, Senior Executive Vice President

Human Resources & Organization Excellence,

PTT Public Company Limited Rolled the story.

“This project was initiated when all of

the staff at PTT, including PTT Exploration

and Production Public Company Limited

moved to a newly built office building called

Enco (Energy Complex) Now there would be

more space for us. The 20-year-old building

where they used to work, located behind

the Enco, was too old and too small for

2,000 staff. With these reasons, we decided

to renovate the building in order to create

better working atmosphere as well as happier

working hours,” he said.

Originally, there are two buildings in the

PTT’s head office; the 24-storey building

which is home to PTT’s headquarters and the

8-storey building, belongs to PTT Exploration

and Production Public Company Limited,

which can be doubled to 16-storey. When the

renovation is complete, it is expected to be

about 40-storey workspace available. Thus,

interior designing companies are being called

to pitch their ideas and concepts for the proper

PTT building renovation.

“Our question is how we can get the

maximum use of the space and make it more

flexible, so that our staff can have more space

to feel at ease. Plus, we want to divide all of

our departments systematically and give them

a particular space, for example, business and

marketing division can be sited at the back

building while the front building can be a

workspace for corporate division. All the

pitching interior companies need to present

us with their concept and perspective plans

for the building’s halls, meeting rooms and

office studios. After all the pitching process,

we finally chose Humanist group, as they didn’t

force us to change too much to become

someone else. Some companies presented

us something that is too modern and

sometimes it requires too much of inventing

new characters which we see we are going

to lose our own identity. Reasonable cost is

another concern.”

Mr. Pitipan continues that this renovation

does help solving many problems, especially

meeting room shortage. There are a total of

70 meeting rooms with one on each floor.

On the 12nd and the 13rd floors are meeting

hub where a large and a small meeting room

together with a training room located. The hub

is decorated in modern style using glasses

and composite wood which allow staff to spot

outside scenery. He also points out that the

selection of the light color paint and modern

furniture will surely create a better working

environment.

“We’ve got a very positive feedback from

our fellow staff. Now we have more space and

new office furniture which give us more

comfort. The small partitions also give us

privacy at the same time we don’t feel too

cramped. This truly serves our need. It

obviously shows that the renovation does

affect working performance. When people

feel good just like they are working at home,

then they would be more enthusiastic about

their work. This is the result we wish to get

from our staffs as we brought them to involve

in this renovation. For example, we let them

vote for the best furniture. We’re lucky

because our staff like the furniture, and most

of all, they are ergonomically designed and

function very well.”

Besides having a reputation on their good

work and responsibility, Humanist is the interior

design company that is very concerned for

environment. Their strong identity includes

applying this philosophy into the renovation

work at the PTT.

“PTT is the organisation that focuses

on the potential of human resource as well as

developing good works, so we came to them

with the idea of renovating for promoting

good and quality works,” Runglawan Ittharat,

Managing Director of Humanist recalled.

“From limited space, we need to well

manage it as well as do it wisely in order to

create better atmosphere for working. There

should be spaces or corners for staff to sit,

chat and brainstorm. Let say, we are trying

to create more public and green spaces. We

connect the 2 buildings together, linking it

with a grand concept called “the 5th Element”.

Since PTT is the company that works on natural

energies which are related to 4 elements:

Earth, Water, Wind and Fire, the company then

represents wisdom. That means the company

knows how to use and make use of the 4

elements wisely to make a great contribution to

the humanity. So, we represent PTT’s valuable

staff as the 5th element which is Gold.”

In terms of interior design, Mr. Sethachart

Suekwattana and Mr. Pongsit Teerarat, two

forefront interior designers of Humanist explain

interestedly that the building itself is originally

eco-friendly constructed. There is only system

design that needs to be working on. So, they

started to work on lighting infrastructure,

light bulb selection, and air conditioning

system which are changed from assembled

air conditioner to separated air conditioners in

order to save energy. The interior decoration

focuses mainly on applying natural texture, for

example, the main entrance is designed with

flows of the 4 elements that meet each other

in the middle of the circle where the gold

element lies, while the working space on each

floor is designed to represent 4 elements by

using 4 colours around screens and partitions.

This would make the staffs who sit in the area

the gold element.

“We decided to use gold colour on all

signage and logos to represent the whole

concept. We believe that when the 5th element

is combined with the other 4 elements, they

will create good things and good works. We

picture PTT as a kind executive, as a leading

company that represents the country, so PTT

corporate image must be highly respectable.

The design should not be too fashionable

which comes and goes, but it should be

something permanent. Some private spaces or

areas such as reception area, staff’s relaxing

corner, library and medical centre can be

colourful while the main hall or office studios

are painted in darker colours to represent

natural texture of wood and stones.”

Mr. Sethachart adds that PTT emphasises

a lot on each staff’s individual working space

so the layout should be well-planned. “We use

their old model as a reference, And carefully

design for each working station. For example,

we decide to hang the monitor instead of

placing it on working desk so that it can be

freely moved while the CPU is placed under

the desk. With this design, it allows staff to

have more space on their table. This is also

the outstanding character of Rockworth

furniture that answers what we need

as well as their good selection of quality

materials.” Little Big Change seems to be a

big challenge for the designer team. However,

judging from the better atmosphere under the

same old dignified feeling of PTT, it is worth

for the better working environment.

In architectural field, although LEED or the

Leadership in Energy and Environmental

Design is internationally recognized green

building certification system, there is an effort

to set a Thai building standard under “Thai

Green Building Institute”. Why? We’ll talk

this out with Mr. Thaweejit Chantarasakha,

President of Association of Siamese

Architects and a founder of Thai Green

Building Institute.

“European or Japanese outfits just

sometimes don’t fit Thais”, explained

Mr. Thaweejit Chantarasakha. “The US LEED

and Japan’s CASBEE are good, but not

100% suitable for Thailand. We have big

differences in terms of geography and state

of society compared to those countries. Then

we thought among our group that maybe

it’s time to create our own green building

assessment standard to promote the use of

environment-friendly materials that are locally

produced for Thai architectures. So that,

boards of members are formed and founded

the ‘Thai Green Building Institute’ since then”,

he added.

building and house to become green which

help developing the country sustainable.

“TREES are different from other

measurements in those Western countries

where state of society and culture aren’t

counted but emphasising on mechanical

point of view. To demonstrate, a pavilion at

the temple won’t make any grades at LEED

while in my opinion, it should pass the test

regarding to its airy, comfortable and energy

saving qualities. However, I’m not sure what

level it is. There’s just something that doesn’t

match with their criteria. Besides the state of

society and culture that we add up, economy

situations, social conditions and transportation

are also concerned. These are messages that

we would like to convey today. Of course, it

may not be 100% perfect but I hope it’s going

to be developed and become practical for

today’s society and era”, he said.

TREES’s criteria are divided into 8 categories :

1. Building Management (3 points)

2. Site and Landscape (16 points)

3. Water Conservation (6 points)

4. Energy and Atmosphere (20 points)

5. Materials and Resources (13 points)

6. Indoor Environmental Quality (17 points)

7. Environmental (5 points)

8. Green Innovation (5 points)

With 4 levels of certifications : Certified

(30 – 37 points), Silver (38 – 45 points),

Gold (46 – 60) and Platinum (61 plus).

“The criteria here are not counted as

regulations. There’s a thin line between them.

Sometimes it’s about business, for example,

many companies now want to promote their

green credentials because it helps them

build a good corporate image. But what will

happen if these companies won’t keep the

standard afterwards? Sure, there will be

a lot of complaints firing to us, asking if they

deserved the certification. This kind of case

also takes place in other countries. But in the

end, we must keep in mind of our goal that

this is mainly for the benefit of the public”,

he added.

Today, the Thai Green Building Institute

is actively promoting its criteria assessment

and standard by organising green building

seminars in order to educate architects,

students and other people. Further information

and criteria assessment and standard can be

downloaded at www.asa.co.th.

“Green is not just a trend. It is a must

and should be applied to our everyday’s life.

I believe we all know what is good and what

is bad. All you have to do is be responsible for

what you do and do what you can. This alone

can help create “Green” environment in our

society,” said Mr.Thaweejit.

Sequence your topicsThe key is to deliver your ideas in a logical

sequence so that your audience gets your

message as clear as possible. How? List all of

the significant points and organise them from

the most to the least. You may add subtopics

using bullet points, following by some more

details. Always prepare a good conclusion

and a ‘thank you’ part at the end of the

presentation. Lastly, never miss out who your

target audience is.

Choose the right fontsTry using clear, simple fonts like Angsana New

or Cordia New. Apply all headlines with a bold

and bigger font. If you’re not sure which font

should be perfect, try as many fonts as you can.

Then choose the one that looks the best. Most

importantly, never use too many fonts in one

presentation, because it can be distracting.

Colour it up with visual elementsAdding some excitement to your presentation

like photos, graphics, video or audio clips, instead

of words alone, can double the chances of

meeting your objectives. But remember not to

lose track of your topics as it can be confusing.

Recheck if they are big enough that the audience

is able to see them clearly from the distance.

Step back from the screen and look at the

overall composition. If your headline, content

and the visuals get along well, it should be

effective enough.

It’s time to brush up on your presentation skills as it is one of the most powerful tools to convince your boss and your client. We’ve got practical techniques of how to make your presentation smooth and professional.

Keep colours and tones consistentThere are many ways to make your presentation

looks consistent. For examples, similar sizes

and shapes of pictures, lines, and graphics can

be put together. The same way as using colours,

you can choose monochrome, earth-tone, or

any other colours that can blend together well

just like what they do in fashion.

Balance your layoutYou don’t have to layout everything in totally

balanced way. Sometimes asymmetry can be

applied to your presentation pages to help it

look less tedious. For example, big graphics on

one side can be mingled with smaller ones

with heavy cluster of colour on the other side.

Make a great compositionGood composition can make your presentation

distinctive and memorable. A big, bold picture

is a great way to grab audience’s attention

rather than putting equal pictures elements

together at the same place. Don’t waste your

time focusing on just one point. Try and finish

with the whole presentation first, and then get

back to check with all details later. That way

you’re able to see what to eliminate and what

to add.

It’s not that hard, right? Your presentation’s now getting more perfect, professional, powerful, and most of all...designed by you!

We all can help reduce carbon emissions and save money for the company by going green at work. As we spend 8Hours a day at work, some small changes in our habits could protect the environment:

1. Eliminate the use of disposables in office, for example, you can bring your reusable mug and dishware to work or there could be a policy to provide filtered drinking water to reduce bottled-water waste.

2. Use carpool or travel on public transport. Telecommuting, e.g. video conferencing, is also help reduces amount of employee travel.

3. Switch off the computer screen when you are not at the desk for extended periods. Peripheral equipment such as printers and scanners need not be constantly plugged in if they are only used occasionally.

4. Switch off the lights and air-conditioners when they are not in use. Also choose energy saving light bulb.

5. Grow plants at home and at your office to improve indoor air quality. Interior air can sometimes be contaminated with toxic chemicals such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from furniture, carpeting and paint.

6. When purchasing furniture for the office, opt for pieces which are not made of composite materials and are easy to assemble and disas- semble to increase the ease of recyclables at the end of their useful lives.

7. If your office is planning to upgrade the furniture, you can donate the used furniture (which is still in good condition) to a charitable organization.

8. Implement a recycling system in the office. Set up recycling corner or boxes for paper, plastics, glass, etc.
