Elvin Earl Bowden Sr., 83, entered into eternal life on Sunday, September 4, 2011. He was born in Bisbee on Oct. 16, 1927 and married Dorothy Moore on July 3, 1949. The couple lived in Globe-Miami until 1951. He worked at Magma for 38 years until he retired

and went to work at the Florence Prison, retiring again in 1989. Earl is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Marie Bowden; children, David E. Bowden of Superior, Katie Jean Stephenson of Clearfi eld, Utah and Danny R. Bowden (Pauline) of

Layton Utah; brothers, Elmer (Latricia) Bowden of Shadypoint, Oklahoma and Edward (Jan) Bowden of Micanopy, Florida; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death

by his son, Elvin Earl Bowden Jr., who died in February 1975. Services for Mr. Bowden were held at the Bible Missionary Church in Superior Sept. 9. Interment and graveside services were held at Fairview Cemetery. The family was assisted by Superior Funeral Home

of Bessie Oretha Bartmess Gassaway and Frank Floyd Gassaway. He was a retired miner and a Korean War veteran. He served in the United States Air Force from 1953-1957. He enjoyed fi shing and loved his animals. He is survived by two daughters, Cathie Poor and Pamela Peck; son, Curtis Gassaway; fi ve grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Curtis Gassaway. Services for Mr. Gassaway were held Sept. 13 a t the Superior Funeral Home followed by a graveside service with military honors. A celebration of his life was held later the same day at the VFW in Superior.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damage amounts are estimates.

By Mila Lira For the past three weeks, Copper has remained just over $4 a pound. Throughout the day Copper had dipped below $4 to $3.91 but closed at $4 a pound. Gold, Silver and Platinum also continue to experience a decrease in price.Millrock Announces Resumption of Drilling at San Jose Copper Porphyry Project, Arizona Millrock Resources Inc. reported that it has started a second phase of drilling at its San Jose project in the Safford area of southeastern Arizona. Inmet Mining Corporation (“Inmet”) is funding the drilling as part of an earn-in option agreement. Millrock is the operator.Three holes will be drilled in the northern

part of the San Jose claim block to test coincident magnetic high ZTEM conductor anomalies. Six geophysical anomalies were identified during a recent airborne survey and three have been selected for this drill program. Based on their survey results, Millrock staked an additional 289 claims, substantially increasing the property holding. The holes have been pre-collared using a reverse circulation rig, and will be completed with a core rig. Hole depths may be up to 1,700 m each. The San Jose project is positioned right at the intersection of the prolific Safford and Morenci porphyry trends. The Safford deposits, presently being actively developed by Freeport McMoran Copper & Gold, form a linear

northwest striking trend. The San Jose project is located approximately six km from the Sanchez deposit at the southeast end of the Safford trend. Morenci is located approximately 30 km to the northeast. Together, Safford and Morenci account for approximately 10 billion tons of past copper production and future reserves and resources. A porphyry cell located on Millrock’s claims was discovered by drilling done by Noranda Inc. in the early 1990s. ZTEM geophysical conductive zones surrounding magnetic highs are the primary target of the current drilling program. The geophysical signature appears very similar to that reported over the Safford deposits.Toro Resources Granted Permit for 27

Drill Sites Toro Resources Corp. has reported that the US Forest Service’s Tonto National Forest has issued a permit which will allow the Company to conduct an exploration drilling program at its Morgan Peak Copper Project in Arizona which is located in the Globe-Miami mining district. The Morgan Peak project has been explored since the late 1940s by numerous groups including Consolidated Copper, Kerr-McGee, Exxon (Humble Minerals), Phelps Dodge and most recently American Copper Corporation. The permit allows Toro to drill-test the southern and eastern portions of the project area with 27 drill sites under a Plan of Operations. The Company intends to

carry out the program of core drilling, totaling approximately 3,000 meters, to test the thickness and depth of the copper mineralization. The Company is currently negotiating a drill contract and intends to mobilize the drill within the next 60 days. William Galine, President of Toro, states that, “We designed this drill program to have minimal environmental impact while providing the company with a thorough test of the project. Based on past work and Toro’s recent studies, we believe that if the Company has exploration success then development of this project could substantially boost the local economy.” Historic drilling has identified copper

as copper oxide and chalcocite occurring as a shallow “blanket” of mineralization within the project boundaries. The zone of mineralization is an area roughly 1,500 meters wide by 3,600 meters long extending in an easterly direction throughout the property. Past drilling includes over 70 holes ranging from 120 meter spacings in the northwestern portion to over 1,000 meter spacings in the eastern portion of the property. The 27 permitted sites are interspersed between historic holes within the south and central portions of the project area. These sites are designed to further define the mineralized “blanket” encountered in previous drilling and provide a sense of continuity.

By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center Mankind has a problem. We worry a lot. I once read an article about some of the U.S. Presidents. It showed pictures of them when they were elected and then several years later. Everyone’s hair had turned gray and their faces looked

older than their ages. The stress of a high pressure job does that to a person. Deuteronomy 34:7 tells us that Moses was 120 years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone. This is illustrated by the fact that the day he died, he climbed to the top of Mt. Nebo, no small undertaking for

Pastor’s Cornera man his age. Abraham lived to 175 years old, married twice (Sarah died at 127,he remarried and had more children), and lived a full life. Yet today, we see people pass before they should. Jesus says in Matthew 11:28-30, “To all those who are weary, tired out and burdened down; come to Me and I will give you rest. I’ll take all your cares and burdens and you take Mine, because it will be easier for you.” Our bodies are not designed to handle the stress of all life’s problems, worries and cares. We fall apart and spend our money looking for an emotional cure. Many of us regularly visit a counselor, trying to find help. We ignore the free advice Jesus gave: “come to Me.” The Bible tells us in James 5 to ask for prayer when we are sick. Experience shows that when the doctors are puzzled and don’t know what’s wrong after all of their tests, we finally cry out to God in desperation. Whey don’t we just go to Doctor Jesus first? Ephesians 4:23 tells us to “be made new in the attitude of our minds.” Chapter 2, verse 4 says, “because of His great

love for us, God made us alive with Christ.” As we develop a close relationship with our Lord, as we come to Him, He renews our minds and spirits, causing us to pull away from the patterns of the world. Business success is all about networking. The more we network, communicate, with Jesus, the stronger we become and the more our lives are made spiritually correct. We must be sincere. This is not simply a game we play. Life is about how we live, but how we live is who we are. As a believer in God, we have a life purpose that is designed by Him, special to each one of us. Worry, frustration, anxiety and fear will keep us bound under a stress level that will only hurt us, destroying our relationships and good intentions. A number of years ago, a song was written that said: “shattered dreams, wounded hearts and broken toys – give them all to Jesus, and He will turn your sorrows into joy.” That is how truly simple it really is. Life is hard, but God heals. Just say yes to Jesus. Let Him turn your life around for the good. God bless!


The Head Start Program is in full swing in Superior. On Friday, Sept. 9, the first Fatherhood Activity was held. The Head Start Fatherhood activities are part of the National Fatherhood Initiative. Several fathers, an uncle, as well as other family role models were on hand to participate and volunteer with the children. The children had a food tasting activity which consisted of gold fish crackers with pineapple.They also created personal paper plate pizzas using various cutouts and shapes glued onto circles and triangles. In Head Start, a principle is play. Play is vital for children to learn. One of the best learning experiences for children happens when the children are allowed to choose what they want to do, which is known as “free play.” Head Start provides children with a variety of play experiences both indoors and outdoors, as well as a rich literacy environment. Open-ended questions are often asked, to assist the children to think, as well as learning to develop the skills of socializing and becoming creative problem solvers. Learning comes through activities that children enjoy, and with the assistance of parent and community volunteers, a positive attitude towards school can be established as a foundation for future education.

By John Hernandez The Panthers’ Sept. 2 game against Ft. Thomas ended in defeat 14-38. Missed opportunities and too many penalties hurt the Panthers. “Ft. Thomas played a very good game and took advantage of every opportunity,” Panthers’ Head Coach Ryan Palmer said. “They jumped out to a 14 – 0 lead and never looked back.” Before the half, Louie Fuentes scored on a six-yard run and then threw a pass to Mario Padilla for the two point conversion. The halftime score was 22 – 8. In the second half, Mario Padilla scored on a three-yard screen pass but it was too late for the Panthers as they trailed 30 – 14. On offense Chris Grap had 177 yards rushing. Mario Padilla rushed for 38 yards and had 125 receiving yards. Louie Fuentes passed for 175 yards. Defensive play was led by Mario Padilla who had 10 solo tackles and forced a fumble which was recovered by Ray Villalobos. Chris Grap had an interception. The Panthers played Gilbert Christian on Sept. 9, a game that was shortened due to storms. No score or statistics were available at press time. The Panthers will travel to Hayden this Friday to take on the Lobos.

from Arizona, Nevada and California. From Globe, the Mi Vida Car Club will be contributing to the 90 to 100 entries which are planned for the competition. Los Changuitos Feos de Tucson, one of the few premiere youth mariachis in the United States, is another of the Superior Fiestas Patrias highlights. The group has made its mark in the world of mariachi music. LCF regularly perform 80 to 100 times a year at various local, national and international events. These mariachis were

invited to perform at St. Augustine’s Cathedral in Tucson on the very same weekend they will be performing in Superior. This mariachi juvenil is made up of 15 musicians of whom 12 were introduced last week. Three are left to be introduced to the public they will be entertaining. They are: Isaiah Garcia, Anisa Lopez and Daniel Motley. Isaiah Garcia is an eighth grader at Fickett Middle School. He is a second generation Changuito Feo and plays trumpet like his father.

His father was with LCF from 1978 to 1981. “What I can say about LCF are the words: have fun, meet people throughout the United States, and make life long friends,” assured Isaiah. He wants to study medicine. Anisa A. Lopez attends 10th grade at Sunnyside High School and plays the violin. Anisa learned about LCF from an alumnus of the group, Robert Martinez who is now a member of Mariachi Cobre, a very well known adult mariachi group.

“What I can say about LCF is that I am learning more about mariachi music, technique and our culture. Our instructors are teaching us much more than ‘mariachi music,’ they are teaching us how to honor and respect the music and each other!” Anisa stressed. She plans a career in biomedical engineering. Daniel Motley is an eighth grader at Valencia Middle School and has been playing violin four years. Daniel is in his school’s mariachi group and in LCF. At first,

Daniel was too young to be in a mariachi group. So, Daniel saved his money to pay for private lessons. His private instructor advised him to audition for LCF. “I have learned more in the past few months with LCF than in the past three years,” he said, “I find tocadas, practice, camaraderie, and learning mariachi brings me happiness.” Listening to all of this fine young men and women will be an experience in itself. They invite all to come and enjoy this experience.


By Mila Lira The Superior Parks and Recreation Department will finally have place to call their own. For many years the town has struggled to maintain a permanent place for the parks and recreation programs. For a while the programs were held at the Magma Club then that closed for remodeling; the kids were moved to the old fire house on Magma and that was sold; and prior to either of those facilities the recreation programs were once held

at the Belmont Building. After all those moves the Parks and Recreation programs existed without a designated home. This year the Town of Superior purchased the Roosevelt Junior High from the Superior Unified School District. The Town purchased the building to allow town operations to be centralized after they were forced to move from the Belmont Building on Main Street due to mold problems. The move to the Roosevelt allows for adequate storage of Town

records and offices for the town administration but most importantly there is now a permanent place for the Town to provide recreational activities and space for the youth. The former Roosevelt Junior High classrooms five and six are currently being renovated into an area for Superior kids ages 8 and up to come and enjoy themselves. Room 5 will be an activities and technology room for Arts and Crafts, Board Games, movie watching and computer usage. Room

6 will have pool tables, foosball tables and be more of a game room for students to hang out in. In the future there are plans to have organized activities in addition to the passive recreational activities the center will provide. A tremendous amount of collaboration has already taken place to get the facility up and running for their grand opening. The Superior Public Library donated computers and software that the Library no longer uses as well as videos for the television

area. Barbara Arriola, the Town of Superior Parks and Recreation director, explained that because they have moved so often, many of their materials such as games, craft supplies and electronics have been ruined. She has been working to salvage as much materials as she can but she is always willing to accept donations for the recreation programs. They are also in need of energy efficient appliances and electronics as well furniture such as seating

arrangements and tables. To celebrate their new location the Parks and Recreation department will host an open house on Friday, Sept. 23, at the center from 3 to 7 p.m. The Town Hall/Parks and Recreation department is located in the old Roosevelt Junior High at 199 Lobb Avenue. The public is encouraged to attend the open house and celebrate the grand opening of the center. At this time, the center is planning to be open from

Applications for utility assistance grants will be taken on Friday, Sept. 16, in Superior, according to Mary Lou Rosales, Executive Director of Community Action Human Resources Agency. The special intake will take place starting at 9 a.m. at the JFK Elementary School Auditorium, 1500 Sunset Drive. The length of time volunteers will remain at the Special Intake will be based on the number of participants present. Individuals need to arrive and sign in early as applications will be taken on a fi rst come fi rst serve basis. Only individuals registered by noon will be considered. The event is for individuals from Superior, Kearny, Top of the World and Queen Valley. Individuals from other communities will not be seen. CAHRA and local social services agencies are working together to bring you this special intake. CAHRA staff and volunteers will meet with low-income individuals who meet income guidelines. The services are aimed at helping households to stretch their income. “We are limiting our applications to Low Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP) utility assistance only. Households needing rent and other services must call for a regular appointment. While we understand that the need is great, we are committed to providing LIHEAP assistance to the most households possible. Considering other requests takes up valuable

time that we could use to serve more households with utility assistance. It is also imperative that persons applying for LIHEAP services come prepared with required documentation so that a determination of eligibility can be made immediately. When we try to accommodate applicants who are unprepared, it cuts down on the number of applications we can complete,” Rosales said. Those interested in applying for the Utility Assistance grant, must bring original documentation with them including their most recent electric and gas bills (all pages) (paid or unpaid) and the following documentation for all household members:• Social Security Cards • Proof of all income (earned or unearned) received in the last 30 days from Aug. 18, 2011 through September 16, 2011• Applicant Identity Verifi cation: Drivers License, Photo Identifi cation• Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Legal Resident Status: Birth Certifi cate, Certifi cate of Naturalization, U.S. Passport, Verifi cation/Award Letter of current SSD-Social Security Disability/SSI-Supplemental Security Income benefi t or proof of current legal resident status This assistance can be received once every 12 months. Public NoticePursuant to Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S.) § 49-176.B, BHP Copper Inc. (BHP Copper) is providing this general public notice announcing that it has submitted to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) on August 19, 2011 a request for a no further action (NFA) determination for 45 properties located within the Northwest Study Area (Study Area) of Superior, Arizona. BHP Copper is also giving notice that it has submitted to ADEQ on August 19, 2011 a report supporting its NFA

determination request and that the report will be available for public inspection and review in Superior as specified below. Pursuant to A.R.S. 49-176.D, ADEQ will consider written comments submitted in response to this notice prior to issuing a NFA determination. Consistent with the requirements of A.R.S. § 49-181.A, BHP Copper is requesting a NFA determination for properties where the concentrations of metals in the soil meet all soil remediation levels approved by ADEQ

for the Study Area. The remediation levels (for residential use) include (1) pre-determined soil remediation levels listed in Appendix A of the Arizona Soil Remediation Standards for copper (3,100 milligrams per kilogram [mg/kg]), lead (400 mg/kg), and manganese (3,200 mg/kg); and (2) a cumulative excess lifetime cancer risk for arsenic of 2 x 10-5 and a Hazard Index for arsenic that is not greater than one. A study conducted in 2004 revealed that the pre-determined soil remediation levels for residential use

were met in all sampled properties for aluminum, antimony, barium, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, cyanide, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, thallium, vanadium, and zinc. Properties in the Study Area where the ADEQ-approved remediation levels are met without the need for further action are listed below by property number and by street address and/or parcel number. The property numbers serve as a cross-reference for information included in reports previously submitted to ADEQ.

A copy of the report supporting BHP Copper’s request for a NFA determination for the properties listed above will be available for public review from September 14, 2011 to October 17, 2011 at the Superior Public Library, 99 Kellner Avenue, Superior, Arizona 85273, during regular business hours from 11AM to

GLOBE – Pavement improvement work will require lane restrictions this week along an 11-mile stretch of US 60 between Superior and Top of the World, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Crews will continue work on US 60 just east of Superior to Top of the World daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday (Sept. 16). A pilot car will lead eastbound and westbound traffic in alternating directions along one lane.What to expect during construction:• Intermittent lanes closures are scheduled on eastbound and westbound US 60 between mileposts 225 and 236.• A pilot car will direct eastbound and westbound traffic intermittently through one open lane the entire week.• The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph through the construction zones.• Motorists should expect

delays of up to 15 minutes.• Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel. While lane restrictions are in effect on US 60 for this project east of Superior (mileposts 225-236) and the US 60: Siphon Draw to SR 79 project (mileposts 199-211) near Gold Canyon, motorists from the Superior, Kearny, and Globe/Miami area should allow extra time for travel to and from the Phoenix area. Drivers can expect “longer than usual” delays next week during traffic peak times for both projects. The project schedule is subject to change due to a variety of reasons, including weather, material availability and mechanical difficulties. commented Michael McPhie, President and CEO of Curis. “After many months of technical review and meetings with our team in Arizona, the Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) has concluded that the development of the Florence Copper Project is the highest and best use of the land. . This is a key step in the approval and permitting process for the project and is an important part of preparing the ground for the start of development early in 2012.” Curis holds the rights to a 160 acre Mineral Lease issued by the ASLD. That lease covers a little over half of the known 2.84 billion pound Measured and Indicated copper oxide resource located in Florence, Arizona. The remaining 1,182 acres of land that is owned by Curis is private patented land. of the Senate and House Western Caucuses released a plan to create jobs in America. The plan calls for eliminating restrictive government policies and regulations concerning domestic energy production as well as mining exploration, agriculture and forestry. One of the key points to the plan it so strengthen the mining sector the plan specifically authorizes that the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation act be passed to allow the Resolution Copper Mine to be developed. It is expected that the Republican controlled U.S House of Representatives will vote later this month on Rep. Paul Gossar’s Land Exchange Bill (H.R. 109). If the bill passes in the House of Representatives, the bill will then need to be approved by the Senate. Senators McCain and Kyl are both supporting the bill to be passed in the Senate but there will need to be support from the Democrats in the Senate in order for the bill to pass the Senate.
