with Father Michael Labor Day is a bit early this year. Most school districts return this Tuesday, but there are a few that only begin the following week. Some rejoice at the return of the school routine, others lament the end of vacation time. For some young people this can be a time of great transition if they are starting at a new middle school, high school or college. For some parents it can also be a traumatic time as they see their “baby” begin a new chapter in their lives. Wherever you are in this spectrum, enjoy these final days of summer. Last weekend we had a guest speaking on behalf of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. This is an important effort on several levels. First, the work of Catholic Charities and other Diocesan Programs is important. But secondly, it is a reminder that we share in the work of a wider church. It is not just Holy Cross that we are concerned about, but we share in the efforts of an active and vibrant church on Long Island and beyond. Finally, there can be a great financial benefit to our parish. We are approximately $10,000 away from our goal. If we hit that goal we will receive back a rebate of almost $13,000, which would be a huge bonus to help our budget. Please, if you have not made a donation or pledge it is not too late to do so. Information is available in this bulletin, the Atrium or on the Diocesan website; drvc.org. If you look around our building you will notice it is clean and in good order. We are very grateful for our two new custodians; Mr. John Huether and Mr. Edward Guise who were hired in June. Their hard work in cleaning and maintenance as well as in making repairs is very much appreciated. They have taken our parish to heart and are doing all they can to make our church and grounds shine bright. I am looking to create a “Buildings and Grounds” committee for the parish. The group needs to be comprised of individuals who have knowledge and expertise in fields like electrical, plumbing, HVAC, landscaping, design, etc. The committee will evaluate our facilities and develop a program to care for and improve what we have. I would like to create a plan for maintenance and improvement to avoid unexpected costly repairs. If you would like to be considered for this group, please let me know. Had this group been around back in July, I probably would not have ended up with a lime green bedroom.

There are several items I would like to bring to your attention regarding our Youth Ministry program: First, Thank you and Farewell: In May, Ms. Denise Cortegiano, who has been serving in Youth Ministry here at Holy Cross since 1997, decided it was time for her to move on. Opportunities and developments in her own life led her to this decision. We are grateful for all her hard work with this ministry through the years. There will be a formal farewell for Denise at the 5:00 PM Mass on Sunday, September 8. If you have been touched by Denise’s work or our Youth Ministry program please come out to express your gratitude. What will happen in the future? This announcement has prompted the Pastoral Team to look at the youth ministry program in the parish. I am absolutely committed that ministry to youth will continue. We are evaluating and forming a plan for moving forward. It will take some time to work out the many details, but here are some of what we are looking to include:

Continuation of regular Sunday evening meetings for high school age youth. Creating opportunities and gatherings for our 7th and 8th grade students. Recognizing that there are youth involved in many aspects of parish life (liturgical

ministries, Vacation Bible School, etc). We would like to create opportunities for all our young people who are involved in different parts of parish life to come together for prayer and fun.

This will involve hiring a person to oversee these many facets of what can be a far reaching ministry. The Pastoral Team will continue to meet to finalize a job description. And then there needs to be a process of seeking and interviewing potential candidates. While I would like all of this to be immediately resolved, it will take time to get through all the necessary steps. What happens until then? Very graciously the many members of the Life Teen core group have offered to provide a structure and program for the Sunday evening meetings. These meetings will follow the Life Teen format that has been used in the past. I am grateful for their willingness to be present to and serve the young people of Holy Cross. Once a new Coordinator of Youth Ministries is hired the details of the various opportunities will be announced. The Sunday evening Youth Mass will resume on September 8. The Life Teen band will provide the music. All are welcome to attend these Masses. All our young people in grade 9 or above are welcome to attend the meetings that follow Mass. More information will be forthcoming as decisions are made. This is not a simple undertaking. The Pastoral Team is committed to taking the time and effort necessary to ensure a viable and life giving ministry. Please pray for Denise at this time of transition in her life. And please pray that the Spirit will lead us to form a ministry program that will touch many of our young people. Fr. Michael

As of this date, we are still waiting for many families to re-register their children for Religious Education. As placement has begun, it is VITAL that all families complete all paperwork that was sent home in April, and return it ASAP. As we prepare for the upcoming Religious Education year, we have an urgent need for people to teach religion in their homes to our children. We have a special need for Catechists in Level 2 in the Mount Pleasant area. We also have a need for Catechists in all levels in several geographic regions of the parish. To be a Catechist, all you need is a desire to share your faith. Please call the Religious Education Office at 265-2200 ext. 11. We look forward to hearing from you.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

MEETINGS THIS WEEK

As you are aware, Old Nichols Road is undergoing construction work. We have been assured by the Smithtown Highway Department that access to Holy Cross Church during the week will not be denied. Please be mindful that if Old Nichols Road is not accessible at Smithtown Boulevard, you need to enter Old Nichols Road from Gibbs Pond Road. And, if Gibbs Pond Road is not accessible, then you need to enter through Smithtown Boulevard. Please be patient during this construction phase and give yourselves extra time to get to church.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!

September already? Wow! Can hardly believe how fast the days of summer go by. Yet, in our spiritual lives each day is

a gift we are to treasure. How do we continue to treasure each one? By

spending time with our Creator.

Saturday, September 14th at 9:30 to 11:00 AM

Women’s Prayer will meet in the Fr. Joe

Room and spend some precious time with our God. Before the hectic school

days begin (or if your child or grandchild has already started), come spend some time in quiet reflection. We welcome

you and invite you to come share with us your special brand of Spirituality.

As one woman in the group says, it is “a gift for myself.” Give yourself this opportunity away from schedules,

chores, carpooling, juggling it all, and spend some time for YOU with the one who loves you and gifts you with each

day!!
