Shepherd’s Sharing Different Points of View: Unlike last week’s

article which was based on the wrong set of Scripture readings, this weekend, I’m pretty sure that I’m on the right page. There’s a line in Mark’s version of the story about the woman with the hemorrhage that does not appear in Matthew or Luke’s account. Mark points out that “she had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew worse.” It seems that Mark’s point of view doesn’t have much confidence in or respect for the health care professionals of his time. Although Matthew leaves that part out, Luke leaves most of it out and instead adds that she was “unable to be cured by any-one,” implying that it’s not the doctors’ fault. (Tradition has it that Luke himself was a physician.) Mark’s “dig” at the medical profession is typical of his gospel’s style. Mark’s gospel doesn’t pull any punches. He tells it like he sees it, warts and all. There are frequent references to the human faults and failings of the Apostles and their weakness and diminished capacity to understand or believe. Though not an apostle himself, Mark was influenced by the preaching of Peter, who was certainly aware of his own limitations, yet was not afraid to speak his mind; and Paul who could be quite critical of himself as well as others. As the first of the Gospels to be written, Mark can be pretty rough.

In addition to this “behind the scenes” insight into the style and mindset of Mark’s gospel, there is a broader issue at work in all three of our readings. It is the issue of death itself and the vulnerability of life. We believe that life is precious, even sacred. We insist on a respect for life at all stages. Medical science has devel-oped and continues to develop the means to combat or at least impede many of the causes of death. In spite of these efforts, we know that death is an inescapable part of life on this planet. Yet, our first reading makes it quite clear that “God did not make death.” In fact, “when God looked at everything He made He found it very good” and, as we find out today, “there is not a destructive drug among them…for justice is undying.” Our reading from the book of Wisdom attributes the existence of death to the “envy of the devil.” Taking that point of view, the devil certainly has a variety of tools to use: sickness, accident, debilitation, natural disaster, violence, etc. Another way of looking at the matter is to recognize that, while the plan for creation may have been perfect, once it was set in motion, imperfections and impurities got mixed in when God handed it over to humanity. Those “wholesome” drugs came with side effects. In spite of our best efforts, nothing in this life is perfect. Even Ivory Soap is only ninety-nine and forty-four one hundredths per cent pure. The natural and man-made causes of death are among those imperfections and impurities. So, the question arises, “Why doesn’t God just fix it, filter out

those impurities and restore it to perfection?” or, more basically, “Why does God allow such evils to happen?” The answer lies in the fact that the All-Powerful God has placed a limit on His power. That limitation is the human will. God will not impose His will on us. Rather, He desires to work in cooperation with us; to partner with us. Throughout the history of our faith, God offered a series of limited agreements to His people, but they fell apart and had to be re-established. Then Jesus came with the offer of a full partnership. In his letters, like the excerpt we have in this weekend’s second reading, St. Paul frequently refers to that partnership. At the heart of that agreement is the acceptance of a life without death or any other imperfection. The catch is that we must see the world from the point of view that Jesus presents. That means giving up our own point of view.

This week’s gospel reading presents a typical example. In the view of almost everyone, the synagogue official’s daughter was dead when Jesus approached the house. Jesus ignored their point of view and offered His own interpretation that the child was asleep. He was ridiculed for it. That is one of the obstacles we face in our acceptance of the partnership that Jesus offers. In fact, most of the obstacles we have are based on some type of fear. Fear is the devil’s most powerful weapon We are afraid of being ridiculed; afraid of what others will say; afraid of being different. We fear suffering and death. We are comfortable with the way things are, as imperfect as they may be, so we are afraid to change the way we’ve always done things; afraid to try something new; afraid to think, act or even look “outside the box.” Another way of putting it is in the old saying, “the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know.” As true as that might be, what if “the devil you don’t know” is not a “devil” at all? The antidote to that saying is, “the God you know is much better than the devil you know.” Time and again, Jesus tells His disciples that fear is overcome by faith. If fear is the devil’s weapon, then faith is God’s. “Trust Me,” He tells them. Trust comes from knowing Him and knowing Him comes from faith. It is that faith that enables us to see the world from God’s point of view.

Wednesday, July 4th, there will be only one mass at 9:00 AM. Be safe and God bless!

ANOINTING OF THE SICK The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered to bring spiritual and physical strength during a serious illness, as well as near the time of death. This Sacrament offers peace and courage to overcome the difficulties that are associated with disease, illness, or dying. People of all ages can avail themselves of the grace of this Sacrament. Anointing of the Sick is encouraged for anyone that is in danger of death from sickness or old age and also immediately before a serious opera-tion. Those suffering from severe mental disorders are also encouraged to seek the peace of Christ in the Anointing. This Sacrament can be repeatedly administered to a person if his/her condition becomes worse, or a new serious condition develops, and is recommended for the elderly as they become more and more frail. If you or someone you love wishes or needs to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, please con-tact one of the parish priests at the Parish Office. Contact information:

A Prayer For “Renew My Church” Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly, to listen to each other attentively, to imagine our future boldly, to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously, to stay together in charity , to surrender our own plans readily, to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forev-er and ever. Amen

Alumni Update Jake Rahn - Class of 2014 My name is Jake Rahn, and I graduated from St. Germaine with the Class of 2014. I recently graduated from Marist High School as the Class of 2018’s salutatorian. I am grateful to St. Germaine for providing me with an excellent foundation for my education and teaching me the importance of hard work. The long nights I spent doing homework at St. Germaine prepared me well for even longer nights studying for high school. I appreciate the Catholic education and values that were instilled in me during my years at St. Germaine. Next fall I will be attending Purdue University, and I will continue to rely on those values and study skills for my future goals.

ST. GERMAINE VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL JULY 9-13 2018

9AM-1PM

Vacation Bible School is a week long camp where children gather to learn about God. The children grow together and build friendships, while creating new and fun experiences. In groups, the children travel to different stations for unique activities. There are Bible stories and videos, sing and dance, games, arts and crafts, and experiments in imagination station. The kids learn through their leaders and the Bible message of the day about God’s love! There is a new message everyday.

Monday: When you’re lonely… Jesus rescues! (Luke 15) Tuesday: When you worry… Jesus rescues! (Luke 10:38-42) Wednesday: When you struggle…Jesus rescues! (Luke 22:39; Matthew 26:36-56) Thursday: When you do wrong… Jesus rescues! (Luke 23:36-24:12) Friday: When you’re powerless… Jesus rescues! (Acts 3:1-26)

On Friday, there will be a performance that the kids will put on showing all of the songs and dances they learned throughout the week at 1pm! After the show there will be a quick lunch for all of the families. We ask that everyone would bring a dessert to share.

The cost of VBS is $35 per child. This fee includes t-shirts, snack, and crafts everyday. We ask that you send your child with his or her own lunch each day. Please turn in the attached form with the money to the parish center or through the office at the school. The minimum age requirement is 3 years old and must be potty trained. Forms were due on June 11th. Registration will be available after this date, but the fee will be $50 per child due to the expenses of express shipping. Checks can be made out to St. Germaine.
