QUI-1060 ULTRA 50:50 Installation Manual 11
The shorter of the two blue wires coming from
the transfer line should be connected to the
terminal block highlighted.
The second (re-collection) line should now be
connected to the outermost heated valve
connection point.
QUI-1060 ULTRA 50:50 Installation Manual 12
The short blue wire should be connected to the
opposite terminal to the sample connection on
the terminal block.
The two longer blue wires connected to both
transfer lines and the green and white (twisted)
thermocouple wires on the sample line are fed
down through the 50:50 module.
The blue wires connect to the green terminal
block of the ULTRA 50:50 heater PCB (Either wire
may be connected into either position on the
terminal block).
The green and white wires are connected to the
grey terminal block at the top left hand side (The
green wire should be connected to the left-hand
side terminal position and the white wire to the
right-hand side position).
Return the fan bracket at the rear of the
instrument to its original position and tighten the
white thumbscrew.
QUI-1060 ULTRA 50:50 Installation Manual 13
Remove the split filter tube (SERUTDSERUTDSERUTDSERUTD----5065506550655065) from
the UNITY 2 system and insert into the position
on the ULTRA 50:50 module (lift the 50:50 split
filter cover using the black knob to gain access to

Lift the handle and remove the split tube.
Remove the 2 screws highlighted and lift away
the split tube oven.
Position UNITY 2 close to the ULTRA 50:50
system and move into place gently so that
the sample tube from the (shorter) sample line
may be inserted into the UNITY 2 sample tube
position and the connection from the re-
collection line may be made into the UNITY 2
split tube position.
QUI-1060 ULTRA 50:50 Installation Manual 14
Fully raise the modified tube oven cover on
UNITY 2.
Carefully position the sample tube horizontally
into the tube oven / cradle on UNITY 2 with the
narrow part of the interface tube nearest the rear
of the instrument.
Gently but firmly lower the tube oven cover on
UNITY 2 taking care not to damage the white
silicone insulation on the interface line.
The oven cover must be lowered completely to
ensure a good seal.
Repeat for the recollection line.
Insert the Y-piece air connection (SERZSERZSERZSERZ----0397039703970397)
supplied in the shipping kit into the appropriate
point on the rear of the 50:50 module.
This allows a single dry air supply to be
connected to the ULTRA 50:50 and UNITY 2
simultaneously.
Connect the power lead to the power socket and
the PC to ULTRA cable (SERSERSERSERMTDMTDMTDMTD----1261126112611261) to the 9-
pin D-connector.

QUI-1060 ULTRA 50:50 Installation Manual 15
Use an appropriate helium leak detector to
ensure that the carrier gas connections on UNITY
2 and ULTRA 50:50 are leak tight.
2.3. Labelling the ULTRA 50:50 trays
In order to simplify the positioning and tracking of individual tubes, ULTRA 50:50 trays are not symmetrical.
Each tube position is given a number (1 to 10) and there is a slot in the plastic wall between each tube
position. When a tray is loaded correctly in ULTRA 50:50, the tube position labelled '1' should be nearest to the
back of the instrument and the slot should be to the right.
The ULTRA 50:50 system is shipped with ten autosampler trays. A good working practice when re-collecting all
50 samples is to use alternate trays. e.g. Tray 1 (tubes 1 to 10) are re-collected into tray 2 (tubes 11-20) etc.
However the user is free to arrange the trays to suit his working practices and the software allows complete
flexibility in deciding which re-collection tube should be associated with which sample tube.
Once the position of the re-collection trays has been determined each tray (autosampler and re-collection) may
be individually labeled, on the front sloping surface, using the self-adhesive stickers supplied.
SERMTD-1213BL (2 x pack 10), dark blue labels for the autosampler trays.
NNNNOTEOTEOTEOTE: The front of the tray is that edge nearest tube position 10.
NNNNOTEOTEOTEOTE: Do not label both sides of a tray or this will lead to confusion with respect to which way round to insert
the tray in UltrA 50:50. Only label the sloping surface of the tray nearest tube position 10.
2.4. Installing the system software onto the control PC
See UNITY 2 installation document Section 2.6
QUI-1060 ULTRA 50:50 Installation Manual 16
2.5. Downloading ULTRA 50:50 firmware from the first time
Check all electrical connections between ULTRA 50:50-UNITY 2 and the PC are in place
Switch on both UNITY 2 and ULTRA 50:50.
Access the ULTRA 50:50-UNITY 2 software by either double clicking on the short-cut icon created or by
accessing ‘UNITY’ under 'Programs' in the main system start-up menu. This causes the PC to start downloading
the software to the ULTRA 50:50-UNITY 2 system.
If communications between the PC and ULTRA 50:50-UNITY 2 system are established successfully the display
on UNITY 2 turns purple.
The PC will then be displaying the standard UNITY desorption operation page.
From the menu bar go to View > Options and select the tab marked Configuration
From the Instrument Configuration drop down box, located in the top left hand corner, select UltrA 50:50-
UNITY. Then select the correct Communcation port for the ULTRA 50:50.
Click on ‘OK’ on the options menu, and chose ‘Yes’ when prompted to shutdown the software for the changes
to be effected.
Restart the software
A message ‘Downloading Firmware to ULTRA’ and an associated countdown box then automatically appear
and the LED on UltrA 50:50 turns amber.
If, for some reason, communications are not successfully established, a message box appears as shown
below.
QUI-1060 ULTRA 50:50 Installation Manual 17
Click on ‘Select Options’ and then click ‘OK’.
This will take you back to the Configuration page of Options.
Ensure that the correct PC COM port is selected for ULTRA 50:50.
Change the port if necessary by clicking on the down arrow and then clicking on the correct port from the list.
Close down the ULTRA 50:50-UNITY 2 software, switch ULTRA 50:50 off, wait 10 seconds and then switch ULTRA
50:50 back on again.
Restart the software.
Once the PC has successfully downloaded the firmware to ULTRA 50:50, the LED turns green and ULTRA 50:50
begins to heat to parameters set in the controlling method. The controlling method will contain default
parameters when the ULTRA 50:50-UNITY 2 software is first downloaded.
Communication failure during firmware downloading is rare after initial selection of the correct PC COM ports.
If it does occur, select the 'Cycle power and retry' option and simply switch that part of the system off, wait ten
seconds and then turn the system back on again before reinitialising the software.
