Pastoral Letter Greetings in Jesus’ Name who works odd things!

The Lord kept us safe during the last month; He showered His innu-merable blessings upon our lives. For example, we enjoyed the good weather and rain. WSCS team went for Mission trip to KGF and came back safe. For all these we need to thank Him.

As we have entered into the month of October, We are going to celebrate the Harvest Festival for the English Congregation. We need to pray that everyone participates enthusiastically in it.

In the month of July we meditated upon Holistic Worship, then in August ‘They were different for the Divine’ and in last month ‘Tests against the Teacher’. We learnt that Jesus overcame all the tests since he had a deep knowledge in the word of God.

This month we are going to meditate upon the theme. “THE POW-ER OF PRAYER”. ‘Prayer is the vital breath of every Christian’. Prayer

Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 4

brings a lot of blessings in everyone’s life. One of the aspects is that it brings power to Jesus’ disciples. We are going to meditate mostly from the events in the life of Jesus. I hope this will strengthen our prayer life. We are encouraged to pray at 8 p.m. every day for the Church needs.

Jesus’ personal prayers have been recorded in many places in the four Gospels. Being the God’s son, in other words, God Himself, spent much time in prayer. For example, sometimes early in the morning, some-times evening and sometimes in the night. Whenever he felt the need of charging Himself with the power of God he went to the lonely place and charged Himself. If Jesus needed a life of prayer how much more we need it, as weak human beings. This month let us spend more time in prayer to be charged to live a holy life and do God’s work.

May the Lord bless you!

Yours in His Church Ministry,

Rev.P.Koilraj

SHARING THE GOSPEL - Mrs. Sharon Whittakar

Sharing the Gospel can be scary and sometimes completely over-whelming. As we try to tell others about salvation. We find our palms sweating and our minds grasping for the right words to say, But we don’t need to look for any further than Jesus for an example. The best way to share Jesus’ message to others is to look at how he did it! It is not about making a sales pitch or arguing with the other person about their faith; it is about caring for them, speaking the truth and inviting them to something great – a relationship with God. 1.Be bold – When Jesus shared the Gospel, he didn’t give them a tract and walk away. He boldly called people to repent and get salvation. He wasn’t afraid to share what God had done for him and what was to come for those who believed. We don’t have to be afraid either. When we accept Jesus as our Saviour and when God gives us the Holy Spirit, ‘ it does not make us tim-id, but gives us power, love and self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7) 2.Be graceful – We are totally incapable of saving ourselves from sin. Jesus gave us something that we didn’t deserve and couldn’t earn: He gave us Grace. Jesus always spoke the truth of the Gospel with Grace (Ephesians 2: 1-10). When we focus on other’s sins, we are telling them that they have to fix it themselves or ‘get right’ instead of inviting them into a relationship with the loving Saviour. We don’t share the gospel with others to kick them out for their wrongdoing or judge them for their thoughts. We share the gospel with others to point them to Jesus. 3.Be real – Jesus was Himself all the time (24 x 7). Whether it was a culturally condemned Samaritan woman (John 4: 1-26) or in the presence of His best friends, His disciples – Jesus didn’t fake it or pretend to be someone He was-n’t. He was sincere to himself. As we reach out to others and share the Gospel, we need to be real. God has blessed us with the ability to relate to others in a way no one else can. Jesus was the perfect example for sharing the Gospel with others. We should never forget how important it is to help others come to Christ. Elder M Russell Ballaid said, “Fear will be replaced with Faith and confidence, when we kneel in prayer and ask the Lord to bless us with opportunities to share the good news” We must demonstrate our faith and watch out for op-portunities to introduce the Gospel of Christ to others. In the present age, technology is a significant blessing – it can provoke us to share gospel more. We can encourage our youngsters to use social media for outreach. It can be as simple as posting a scripture passage, or a spiritual article or even a basic question of faith. Let us stay positive with those we speak to help them feel our love and care for them. “Happy Sharing”

Women’s Fellowship - Mission Trip - Mrs. Merjula Jabez

I thank and praise God for He enabled us to go for this mission trip. We were a team of 13-14 women along with 2 boys who headed to KGF on 24th Sep 2017. After the Tamil service at BMC, we left Bangalore at around 10:00AM. We reached the place, Ramana Maharishi Trust, a Hindu organization, at around 11:30 AM. We have been praying and planning for the entire trip. We were welcomed with warm & friendly smiles both from the volunteers as well as the inmates of the Trust. The Trust is taking care of people affected with Leprosy and few elderly people who have been deserted by their family. Even though it was a Hindu Mission Organization, they gladly al-lowed us to sing a few songs and share the gospel. The gospel was shared to the people and final call to salvation was given in prayer. Many people opened up their hearts to Christ. Praise God! All glory to Him. After the prayer, people were given time to share their personal prayer requests. Many of them came forward to share with us about their burdens, requesting us to pray for them. To our surprise, even the lady in charge of the organization asked us to pray for her and her family. Then we realized and thanked God that He had already prepared this place and people for Him. We came to know that a Christian aunty has recently joined the Trust as a cook and she had been sincerely praying for God to send His people to share God's word and to pray for them. Praise God for everything! We were also able to sponsor few beds for the inmates. God is good. We then had lunch at the home and then met few people in their rooms and prayed for them. We know for sure we were not able to meet all of their needs, however we were able to spend some time with them talking and listening, bringing smiles to their faces, most importantly we were able to tell about the love of Christ. Some of them are doing paper bags and they keep sending it to different parts of Bangalore for their income, which they use for buying fruits or for other medical expenses. We were so happy to meet few chil-dren who lived with their mothers affected with leprosy, who are so re-sponsible and are taking good care of their mothers. Our Pastor Amma joined us which was a great encouragement to us. I thank our church WSCS Team, and the others for organizing this Mis-sion trip. Each of us returned home, thanking God for reviving our hearts to be consciously praying with burden and giving to those around us. Let us as a church continue to pray that each soul grows in the Lord and trusts Jesus for their needs and healing. Thank you Lord.

City Life – Some Learnings from Non-believers - Mr Dilip

Some of our ancestors lived in villages which came to the LORD in large numbers. After the first generation struggle, they would have had won-derful fellowship between believers. We, for most part, have chosen to live in cities, where we come across people of many and no faith as well. We there-fore may be influenced in more ways than them. The LORD though wants to use this scattering (for us without persecution till now), to preach His word (Acts 8:4; 11:19). There are three broad orders in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17) - first God, then parents, then neighbours. Christian life could proba-bly be also divided into three phases in the Bible – first, a physical separation and out of bondage (Exodus 20:1,2) from Egypt, second a better separation from Babylon (post which idol worship and polygamy almost fully stopped) and third a full separation of not being a Pharisee but a child of the living LORD. Similarly, there are at least three ways to lead life here on earth – be-ing sinners, unthankful, evil (Luke 6:32-36); be of the faith but dead in works (James 2:17) or be His disciples, bearing much fruit (John 15:8) by keeping His commandments (John 15:10). I personally have learnt a lot from non-believers, few examples be-ing, a teacher who taught me to have the courage to own up after doing something wrong; a Brahmin to whom when I had gone for help, asked if I was a Christian and told me to pray the LORD’s prayer to receive an answer; a manager at work who taught me to be fair, transparent, impartial; a col-league who worked really well but when one mistake appeared did not try to cover it by quoting all the things he did well. The Bible records qualities of many non-believers and those who knew only a little of the LORD. It is im-portant to evaluate ourselves against these to see where we are, as our right-eousness first may have to exceed them, then exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 5:20) to enter the kingdom of heaven. While non-believers (and believers too) can display repentance, acknowledge our LORD, show love when threatened with life (Genesis 20) threatened with destruction of a city, kingdom (Jonah 3) shown spectacular things and fear grips them (Matthew 27:54) bad dreams come (Matthew 27:19) others show them love (Luke 6:32) others do them good (Luke 6:33) they hope to receive (Luke 6:34) Some others genuinely seem to have displayed the fruits of the Spirit in vary-ing degrees.

Love: Fellow travelers with Jonah (Jonah 1:12,13) True, they did throw Jonah into the sea eventually, but only after knowing that they their fight against the LORD is in vain. Is our effort to save the lives of people who we know very little about greater than these travel-ers? Do we take enough risks to save the life of one person? Joy: Hiram, who showed he was happy David had a wise son (1Kings 5:1-

7) In days when many kings wanted to show supremacy like capturing territory, making salves of captives, hoping the other kingdom becomes weak, we see a king who was happy there was Solomon, a wise ruler over another country. Is our happiness at others success greater than this king? Do we praise the LORD for such blessing on others? Peace: Rahab, who chose not to hand over the spies to the soldiers

(Joshua 2) Here is a woman who cares for her father, mother, brothers, sisters, their possessions, though they have left her to fend for herself in such a pro-fession. Are we happy with the rule in Romans 13:1 alone but find it difficult to do what Rahab did? How much more should we care for our loved ones than Rahab. Do we fight in vain, instead of pursuing peace? Longsuffering: Ruth (Ruth 1:16,17; 2:10,13,23) Ruth may have known a little of the LORD of Israel through her hus-band’s family. Yet, what she gave up, how happy she was just at safety and some food makes us realize how much we not only take things for granted but even complain that it is not enough. Gentleness: Artaxerxes the king asking Nehemiah what he could do

(Nehemiah 2:2,6) True, Nehemiah’s prayer, made the way. But, how many times do we genuinely enquire of someone who looks sad, especially those who are finan-cially or socially considered lower than us? How many times are we willing to let go as Artaxerxes did? Goodness: Belshazzar who rewarded Daniel even after an honest but

hurting interpretation (Daniel 5:29) Sad that Belshazzar didn’t repent as the people of Nineveh did, but it is amazing how a pagan king rewards Daniel who speaks the truth which is very painful. Do we allow our pastor, fellow believer, loved one to correct us, or only allow them to speak in general or against others? Do we thank those who have corrected us like Belshazzar?

Faith: Centurion who had great faith (Luke 7:9) Here is a man who was working in the army of a government keen to capture nations and rule over them. Do we believe in Christ more than the Centurion or do we ask for signs, wonders, miracles? Do we love our LORD’s

Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 10

children and our LORD’s work (Luke 7:5) more than this man did? Meekness: Servants with Naaman (2 Kings 5:13) In a world where we think how we can get to the next position, when will my boss retire or move elsewhere, here are servants who want their master to be healed and lead them well. Do we care for those in higher posi-tions than ours more than these servants? Do we humbly talk to everyone? Temperance/Self-Control: Widow who fed Elijah (1 Kings 17:11-15) We may feel what it is to have one meal less and die. However, the self-control the widow showed in not just giving away the flour, wine, wood but also in cooking the meal for Elijah, is maybe one reason what got her a mention from Jesus (Luke 4:25,26). True, she had the promise that if she feeds Elijah, she will not have any lack during the time of the famine. Still, have we trained our children like this wonderful woman in sharing and self-control? Do we labour with our own hands in serving our family and others?

For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God… and if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner ap-pear? – 1 Peter 4:17,18

TEENS SUNDAY REPORT - Ms. Jessica Selvin Teens Sunday was held at BMC on September 17th for the Tamil and Eng-lish service.

A lot of effort went in to make it a success. The suggestion for the theme of 'priorities' was from the teens as they felt it was crucial and important for all members of the congregation. We practiced two days prior and had a lot of fun as well! The practice also brought us together as a fellowship. The Tamil service started at 7:30am and Thenmozi led us in worship. Bible reading was done by roja. There was a short choreography done by the girls. We then performed a skit on priorities wherein we narrated the goals of worldly peo-ple and also the struggles of a growing Christian in keeping his priorities right with a touch of humour. Our mentor, Jabez Uncle, gave the message challenging par-ents on raising a godly generation.

Following the English service there was a forum for discussion between the parents and teens mediated by Jabez Uncle (but only after we took enough selfies to our heart's content!!) Various issues like social media, studies, involve-ment in ministry and relationships were discussed. The points shared were benefi-cial for both the parents as well as teens. The discussion was concluded by our pastor advising us, teens to spend time in prayer and meditation of the Word. This was then followed by lunch. We, as teens, want to thank uncle and aunty with all our hearts for the efforts they put in for teens Sunday as well as mentoring us. As per our teens fellowship tradition, we celebrated with a black forest cake the fol-lowing Sunday!!

Prayer Diary - A point a day Compiled by Mr. Dilip

1. Church - John Piper in Desiring God writes, "Since Christ is no longer on earth, he wants His body, the Church, to reveal His suffering in its suffer-ing". Since we are His body, our sufferings are His sufferings". Let us pray that the LORD will continue to fulfil His purpose for our Church.

2. Gandhi Jayanthi - Praise our LORD for leaders like Gandhi. Let us pray that our LORD will raise many Josephs, Daniels, Esthers, with an excellent spirit (Daniel 6:3) for the nation to see and turn to the Creator.

3. Doing His will - Susannah Wesley, mother of John and Charles Wesley said, "Religion is nothing else than doing the will of God and not our own. Heaven or hell depends on this alone". Let our prayer be that our LORD help each one of us obey Him fully.

4. Accepting His will - Brother Shimanov, confined to a Russian psychiatric asylum for his faith said, "I accept everything God sends, as a child ac-cepts everything from the hand of his father. Cowardice is unreasona-ble". Let us pray that we accept the LORD's will in our lives completely.

5. Those who persecute Christians - A Christian woman while serving time in the Siberrian labour camp, Vorkuta once wrote, "Dear LORD, have pity also on those who persecute and torture us day and night. Grant them, too, the divine grace of knowing the sweetness and happiness of Your love". As Christ taught us let us pray for those who despitefully use and persecute the LORD's children (Matthew 5:44).

6. Taking up our Cross and following Christ - A Chinese Christian once wrote, "Where there is no cross, there is no crown. This lesson cannot be learned from books…in a comfortable environment. If the spices are not refined to become oil, the fragrance of the perfume cannot flow forth…". Let us pray that we will take up our cross and follow Him (Matthew 16:24).

7. Being a witness - Elizabeth Elliot quoting Jim Elliot, missionary to Ecua-dor, who was martyred while trying to bring the Gospel to the Auca Indi-an tribe, wrote, "The word 'missionary' is not in the Bible - the word 'witness' is". Let us pray that we be a true witness of Christ in the place the LORD places us (Acts 22:15).

8. Making use of every opportunity - Tom White, who suffered in a Cuban communist prison for dropping Gospel tracts from a small airplane over the island said, "Opportunity to be a servant of the LORD exists at all times and in all places. Opposition should make no difference. Spiritually we have only one Leader. He orders our steps". Let us pray that we will not waste a single opportunity to serve the LORD (Ephesians 5:16).

Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 12

9. Bearing one another's burdens - Chinese Christian Watchman Nee, im-prisoned for his faith in China writes, "You can only help others in propor-tion to what you yourself have suffered….as you let the Holy Spirit work the dying of Jesus in you - life will flow out to others, even the life of Christ". Let us pray that we will be able to bear one another's burdens and so fulfil the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2).

10. Those in jail - Pastor Richard Wurmbrand writes, "Jail is no hindrance to a useful Christian life". Just like constant prayer was offered to God by the Church when Peter was in prison (Acts 12:5), let us pray for all who are jailed without cause and for those jailed with cause for a full repentance.

11. Families of Martyrs - Mark Galli writes, "I've come to believe that God, in His wisdom, allows martyrdom in every generation in part because, with-out them, the reality of Christ's death for us becomes increasingly blur-ry…". Let us like Jesus take time (Matthew 14:13) remember and help the families of martyrs across the world.

12. Government and the place we live in - A Sudanese Christian witnesses, "We pray for the government of Sudan but thank God for it, too. Thanks to its policies and its war against Christians - the terror, the threats, the imprisonment - look at how the Church has grown…". Let us pray for the welfare of the place we are in to the LORD on its behalf, for in its peace, shall we have peace (Jeremiah 29:7).

13. To never deny Christ - Saleema, when she was a nineteen-year old in Pa-kistan and severely persecuted for her Christian faith said, "I would ra-ther be hung than betray my LORD". May the LORD help us never deny Him at any time, in any degree (Matthew 10:33).

14. Sharing the Gospel - Ray Thorne, missionary to the persecuted Church says, "If we Christians don't continue to share the gospel and push the envelope, the envelope will close in on us. If we maintain a 'silent wit-ness', there will be no witness, and Christianity will die…". Let us pray that all Christians in the world will declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples (Psalm 96:3).

15. Being with Jesus every day - An Iranian pastor, who lost his home and his job because of His faith, says, after escaping to the West, "Sometimes I miss those days of persecution because I was so alive. I felt every day that Jesus was with me". Let us like Christ glorify our LORD in this earth (John 17:4) and every day praise Him (Psalm 145:2).

16. Removing all bitterness and resentment - A former prisoner of faith un-der communism says, "I hate the communist system, but…I love the Com-munists with all my heart…I have not the slightest bitterness or resent-ment against the Communists or my torturers…". If this prisoner who was tortured can say this, let us pray that we who face only a small

Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 13

fraction of this, remove all bitterness and resentment against others from our hearts and in turn love them as Jesus commanded (Luke 6:28).

17. Remembering the persecuted brethren - A Lutheran Pastor, who en-dured horrific torture to protect members of the underground Church said, "A Church that does not remember its persecuted brethren is no Church at all". Let us pray that the LORD will help us remember those in bonds, as bonds with them; and them which suffer adversity, as if we we were suffering with them (Hebrews 13:3).

18. Strengthening and encouraging others - On learning that her mother, father, three younger sisters and nine-year-old brother had all been bru-tally murdered in a concentration camp, Sabina Wurmbrand said, "I will not show a sad face. I owe to God a joyous believer; to the Church, an example of courage; and to my husband, a serene wife". Let us pray that we like Sabina and Timothy, strengthen and encourage others in faith (1 Thessalonians 3:2).

19. Festivals - As many in our nation celebrate Diwali, let us pray that our nation will see Jesus, the light of the world, follow Him and have the light of life (John 8:12).

20. Obedience - A Vietnamese Christian Pastor, imprisoned for his faith writes, "We have learned that suffering is not the worst thing in world - disobedience to God is the worst. Let us pray that as individuals, families, Area Fellowships, Prayer Groups, as a Church, we will love Christ by obey-ing His commandments (John 14:15).

21. Useful to our Redeemer - Pastor Zapata of Peru told his congregation, "Why do you buy a shirt? To use it. Why did Jesus redeem you and buy you with His own blood? To use you for His kingdom". Let us pray that we purge ourselves of anything dishonourable, set apart, useful for our Master, prepared unto every good work (2 Timothy 2:21).

22. Love - A former underground Church Pastor who was imprisoned for his faith wrote, "God will not judge us according to how much we endured, but how much we could love". Let us pray that we love the LORD our God and our neighbours as He wants us to (Matthew 22:37-40).

23. Boldness - Boldened by the words of his wife Sabina that she did not want a coward for a husband, Richard Wurmbrand in the Romanian na-tional congress spoke, "Our first loyalty should be to God and not to Communist leaders". He would later spend fourteen years in prison. Let us as the believers of the early Church pray for boldness to speak His Word (Acts 4:29).

24. Each soul is precious - St. Augustine said, "If all mankind had been right-eous and only one man a sinner, Christ would have come to endure the same cross for this one man. He so loves every individual". Let us

pray that in all our Outreaches, Sunday School, Teens, Youth, Women's, Men's, Seniors Fellowship, every individual will be cared for.

25. Relationships - Pray that all our relationships will be governed by Christ's supreme example of love "By this shall all men know that you are my dis-ciples, if you have love one to another." John 13: 34,35

26. Pastor and his family, all the families of our church - Praise God for Pas-tor and his family and each family and each individual, that everyone would know that 'the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding' (Prov 9:10)

27. Outreaches of our church - Let us praise the LORD for the ministry con-tinuing in Whitefield, Irula, Priyanka Nagar, Varthur, Sadarmangala and outreach Sunday Schools at KR Puram, Hoodi and Devasandra. Let us pray that the numbers increase and Churches be established in faith (Acts 16:5).

28. Diligent teaching of God's Word - Praise God for each Christian who has taken some responsibility to teach God's Word, pray that they would fol-low Ezra's example 'For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and ob-servance of the law of the Lord and to teaching its decrees and laws…' (Ezra 7:10)

29. Giving, Sharing in the needs of others - Pray for regular and disciplined giving, that all would follow the example recorded in 2 Cor 8:4, they ur-gently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord's people.

30. For those having the spirit of fear - Pray that the LORD will grant them a spirit of power, of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

31. Needs of new converts - Many new converts have been supressed and exploited for generations. Let us praise the LORD for the salvation they received and pray that we be able to fulfil our duty to lift them out of poverty, educate them and get them to a level where they are able to provide for their needs (3 John 1:2)

BIOGRAPHY - 3 - Rev.P.Koilraj

CAIN – PENTATEUCH

Meaning of the Name : I have gotten a man from the Lord

FAMILY: Father : Adam Mother : Eve Brother & Sister : Abel, Seth and other brothers and sisters Son : Enoch Occupation : Farmer HISTORY: * Cain was the first divine gift from the Lord to the first family.

* He was the first son of Adam and Eve.

* His birth is hailed as a manifestation of Yahweh’s help.

* He became “a tiller of the ground”

TO REWARD : *He was the first one to build a city and named it on his son’s name

Enoch.

* He was the first one to bring the offering to the Lord.

TO REGRET * His offerings were rejected because he did not bring the best fruits of

his field.

* When God warned him about the sin, he was about to commit, he did

not ask God’s help, but went on his own way.

* His jealousy on Abel, unrepentance toward God culminated in delib-

erate murder.

* He was the first one to murder his own brother Abel.

* He was too weak to overcome the sin as his relationship with God

was weak.

* He became the first fugitive and wanderer, far from the immediate

presence of Yahweh.

* He manifested a terrible outburst of self will, pride, and jealousy

leading to a total and relentless renunciation of all human ties and affec-

tion.

THOUGHT TO REMEMBER

* Our relationship with God is more important than our offering. The

acceptance of our offering is based on our relationship with God.
