2017– NOW WE CAN...

In 2005, Deryck Toles, IM Founder & CEO, suffered a career-ending injury to his professional football dreams. But, in the midst of an ending, something better was just beginning: Inspiring Minds. While spending hours each day in therapy, Toles thought back on the moments in his life that led him there, good and bad; the obstacles that challenged him, the circumstances that changed him, and most importantly, the people who showed him that anything’s possible.

In 2006, Deryck Toles began meeting with 4-5 students once a month to talk about their future. Once a month turned into once a week, and those students started bringing their siblings and their homework. One day, one of those students said they wanted to go to college but didn’t know how, and Inspiring Minds was born.

Today, Inspiring Minds reaches 500 youth annually by creating meaningful interactions and intentional programming. From the vision of one person to a staff of 10 full-time employees and more than 40 seasonal employees, IM is poised to continue to inspire students to achieve a lifetime of success.

is to engage, inspire and empower youth to reach their full potential through education and exposure to life-changing experiences.

is to see every student graduate high school, complete college or vocational school and become strong, successful members of our society.

is to inspire youth to discover their passions and equip them with the tools needed to pursue them.

OUR MISSION

OUR VISION

OUR GOAL

“I was one of the original IM students back in 2006. Today, I’m an electrical engineer for the U.S. Department of Defense, earning my Master’s Degree.

10+ years later, and IM is still there to support me every step of the way.”

– Shawna’ King, IM Graduate, Class of 2010

Page 3: A campaign for the youth of Inspiring Mindsimyouth.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/NOW-WE-CAN... · and Inspiring Minds was born. Today, Inspiring Minds reaches 500 youth annually

Our society tells our youth that they should aspire to be a doctor, a lawyer, or even an astronaut. Our society also preaches that our students should attend the top schools in the country. But how can they dream about something they have never seen?

Inspiring Minds (IM) exists with the sole purpose of showing at-risk youth that they truly can get a good education, follow their dreams and define their own success. From daily one-on-one tutoring and small mentoring moments to college visits across the country and eye-opening industry tours, IM is providing life-changing experiences students would otherwise not have.

IM has built a sustainable program that delivers results by providing free, high quality year-round programming to 500 at-risk students in grades K-12 in Trumbull and Mahoning counties.

Over 30% of America’s youth are home alone during the school year from 3:00-6:00PM. During the summer months, the same children are home alone for an average of 10 hours per day. The National After School Alliance calls these unsupervised times “The Danger Zone.” These are the times where children are exposed or involved in violence, sexual activity, drugs and crime.

The IM After-School Program helps to improve classroom performance and increase student readiness for college and vocations by taking advantage of what might otherwise be unsupervised time: weekdays between 3:00-6:00PM.

Our 6-week Summer Program, running from 8:00AM to 4:00PM Monday through Friday, offers a combination of academics, athletics, nutrition, cultural and other fun activities focused on decreasing summer learning loss.

The IM model continues to evolve to meet the needs of the community; secure diverse resources and partners; and leverage volunteer, community and business collaborations to maximize impact, reachand capacity.

Over the past 11 years, IM has proven itself a sustainable, replicable method in which students can thrive, creating a ripple effect in our society. And with your help, we can impact our community even more.

“I am inspired by the work of Inspiring Minds and

wanted to do what I could (even on a tight budget) to help support the deserving children in Warren. I hope

that my small monthlydonation will help kids that

don’t have the financial, parental or moral supportthat I received as a child.”

THE CHALLENGE

NOW WE CAN.

THE SOLUTIONSince its inception, Inspiring Minds has been able to provide countless hours of life enriching after-school and summer programming for more than 2,500 at-risk youth in grades K-12. And what’s remarkable about this accomplishment is that IM has never owned or operated its very own space. IM has leased space at various locations for more than a decade.

When using borrowed or leased space, IM was at the mercy of powers outside of our control, such as scheduling conflicts, technology complications and access, use of shared spaces, parking lot and space conflicts, and concern for overall student safety.

IM has been without a building for programming and office space since July 31, 2016. Our relationship with the community and the school district helped bridge the gap in the interim.

A new space, exclusive to IM, will give us the freedom to grow and provide the best possible opportunities for our students in one convenient locationthat will be present in the community for many years to come.

837 Woodland StreetGrowth & AccessOption 1: Build a new structure. Option 2: Renovate an existing space.

After speaking with IM leadership and stakeholders, the consensus was that the magic to what we do is in the relationships we have with our students, not the brick and mortar. This is exactly why we decided to renovate an existing building in need of a little TLC, but otherwise structurally sound and spacious, that is located a stone’s throw from Warren G. Harding High School.

With the funds raised for this building campaign, IM will be able to achieve our vision by renovating this space.

Vision for ProjectInspiring Minds has always envisioned creating a permanent space in which youth in our community can gain access to after-school and summer programming that will enrich their lives in countless ways...

Project Priorities• Create a permanent, centralized space for IM to operate its critical After-School and Summer Enrichment Programs• Increase capacity to accept and serve more students• Utilize space to provide new and unique activities • Opportunity to serve all IM students under one roof (K-12)• Create a private IM space in a safe location• Work more collaboratively with our community to utilize space

“Nordson is always looking for organizations that put the well-being and education of the student first.IM is one of those organizations. You can tell that Deryck and his staff actually care about the students

and helping them achieve. Just the type of partner we are looking for in our community.”

– Cecilia Render, Nordson Corporation Foundation, Campaign Supporter

WHY NOW?This project is urgent for Inspiring Minds in order to offer uninterrupted programming to students, and establish a permanent headquarters for the organization as new chapters open in other cities across the nation to serve more youth.

“This project is about so much more than a building. It’s about

creating a safe, positive environment where

every child feels accepted and loved.

When they walk in the door, they will know

that they matter.”

– Deryck Toles,IM Founder & CEO
