Chancel Choir

CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison)

Good Shepherd, we take your care for granted. In the midst of your many blessings, we complain of not having enough. In the presence of danger, we fail to trust your abiding love. When you set a table before us, we turn aside from you. Call us back into your care and help us trust your caring presence, that our actions may proclaim your truth. Amen. (Silence for personal confession)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

SONG OF RESPONSE NO. 655 “Come Away From Rush and Hurry” (vs. 1, 2 only)

Come away from rush and hurry to the stillness of God’s peace; from our vain ambition’s worry, come to Christ to find release. Come away from noise and clamor, life’s demands and frenzied pace; come to join the people gathered here to seek and find God’s face. In the pastures of God’s goodness we lie down to rest our soul. From the waters of God’s mercy we drink deeply, are made whole. At the table of God’s presence all the saints are richly fed. With the oil of God’s anointing into service we are led.

SCRIPTURE LESSON John 10:2b-14, 27 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER (unison) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth

as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH “This I Believe” (in unison)

I believe I need a shepherd. Because I am sometimes timid and other times overconfident, because I often don't know the best path yet pretend I do, because I rush into dead ends or lead others into hazardous places, because my brightest ideas are seamed with darkness, because the things I crave may not be what is good for me, I need a shepherd. I believe in Jesus, the best possible shepherd; his wisdom leads me to the best opportunities, his word comforts me when I'm anxious or afraid, his arm steadies me when I feel weary and heavy- laden, his wounded body displays the cost of my rescue. I believe in Jesus, the best possible shepherd. I believe that I do not find him but he finds me, that I under his care by virtue of sheer grace, the love he gives me is to be shared with others, that he treasures my name and prepares a place for me, that his fold transfixes earth and heaven. I trust Jesus, the good shepherd. Amen. — Copyright © 2002 Bruce D. Prewer. Posted on Bruce Prewer’s Home Page.

Calling All Gardeners (and shoppers!) Once again we have the opportunity to help families within our community by donating fresh fruits and vegetables to Northville Civic Concern. If your garden has an abundant crop, please consider sharing. Whatever you bring in and leave on the produce stand in the Narthex will be delivered to Civic Concern. Each week they donate groceries and produce to local families that may otherwise go without. If you do not have a garden but would like to contribute, store bought produce is also accepted. The Local Mission committee is so thankful for your generosity. We will be collecting produce through the end of September.

Local Mission

Join Local Mission at Second Mile Center! Second Mile Center is a Christ-centered community center located in one of the most

challenging areas of Detroit. The Local Mission Committee is looking for volunteers willing to help serve dinner on Monday, September 25. We will meet at the church around 4:00 pm to carpool to SMC. We plan on returning around 8:00 pm. Sign-up sheet is on

the Local Mission bulletin board.

We also need volunteers to provide 2 dozen cookies or brownies (homemade or store bought - no nuts or oatmeal, please!). Baked goods need to be delivered to the church kitchen no later than 3:00 pm on September 25. Sign-up on the Local Mission bulletin

board. Thank you for supporting the Second Mile Center community!

FPCP is working more closely with our Presbytery and its program for the 13,000 children in foster care in Michigan. Our prayer ministry can help by praying for a special child each month. This month we are praying for 13-year-old Shelby. She recently attended the Meet and Greet party at FPCP this August. Shelby enjoys playing games and participating in sports, and wants to be a cheerleader. She also enjoys crocheting. And unlike many kids, Shelby enjoys school, listing writing and art as her favorite subjects. More info can be found at Mare.org. If you are interested in helping with our foster care projects, please call Peggy at 734.953.1044. Beginning this fall, FPCP will be hosting the foster care meetings for Western Wayne and Oakland County. Our first meeting is Monday, October 16 at 6:15 p.m.

Presbyterian Women

Join Women’s Book Discussion of The Train to Crystal City: FDR's Secret Prisoner Exchange Program and America's Only

Family Internment Camp During World War II by Jan Jarboe Russell

Monday, September 25, @ 7:00 PM This is the dramatic story of a secret FDR-approved American internment camp in Texas during World War II, where thousands of families - many US citizens - were incarcerated. From 1942 to 1948, trains delivered more than 10,000 civilians from the United States and Latin America to Crystal City, Texas, a small desert town at the southern tip of Texas. The trains carried Japanese, German, Italian immigrants and their American-born children. The only family internment camp during World War II, Crystal City was the center of a government prisoner exchange program called "quiet passage." "The Train to Crystal City" reveals the war-time hysteria against the Japanese and Germans in America, the secrets of FDR's tactics to rescue high-profile POWs in Germany and Japan, and how the definition of American citizenship changed under the pressure of war. Sign-up on the Presbyterian Women’s bulletin board to help us plan ahead.

“Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they will be called the Children of God”

Peace Poles have become a symbol in communities, linking people all over the world in the spirit of peace. Every Peace Pole proclaims the prayer “May Peace Prevail on Earth.” There are tens of thousands of Peace Poles in 180 countries all over the world dedicated as monuments to peace as well as many in our own local community. They serve as constant reminders for us to visualize and pray for world peace. We have established ourselves as the “downtown” church dedicated to being a light to the community. FPCP’s peace pole, which will be located in the front yard of our church, is a symbol to the community that our church family strives to live and support peace in our community and around the world. Our Peace Pole has eight languages which represent our community’s diversity and honor our partner church in Malawi:

English Chichewa Hebrew Arabic Hindi Japanese Greek Spanish

Presbyterian Women take this opportunity to honor the memory of Cathy Tartaglia by dedicating the peace pole in her name. Approved by Session, memorial funds received by Presbyterian Women in Cathy’s memory were used to purchase the peace pole. We honor Cathy’s peaceful nature and prayer for peace throughout the world through this international sign of peace.

Join us as we dedicate FPCP’s Peace Pole immediately after the 10:30/10:35 services today, September 24, 2017

as we celebrate the International Day of Peace

Fall

With fall approaching, Threads to Heal the Heart (Prayer Quilt) and the Prayer Shawl Ministry are hard at work creating warm hugs for those in need. Threads to Heal the Heart meets on the 4th Monday of each month. Our first meeting of the fall is Monday, September 25th at 7 pm in Knox Hall. You don't have to be a quilter to help out, there are hand sewing jobs available and we would be glad to get you started on quilting too. Please contact Ginny Weaver (734-207-7554 or [email protected]) if you have any questions about the prayer quilt ministry. Prayer Shawl meets the 4th Thursday of each month at 7 pm in the Hearth Room. Our first meeting of the fall is Thursday, September 28th. We have both knitters and crocheters and would be glad to help you get started on a project. We even have yarn available. For questions about the Prayer Shawl Ministry, contact Darlene Maginley (248-344-9908) or Ginny Weaver (734-207-7554 or [email protected])

If you know of someone you would like to present a quilt or shawl to, the process is easy. Shawls are available on the display in the hallway across from the Library. Just fill in the form and pick out the shawl you would like to present. Quilts can be obtained 2 ways. There are a few in the same display as the shawls. Again, fill out the form and pick out your quilt. You can also fill out a form in the box in the Narthex and leave it in the other half of the box. We will let you know when a quilt is ready to be presented. A new addition is the pocket prayer shawl. These are small squares that easily fit in your hand or pocket. You will find them soon in a basket in the prayer shawl display. You do not need to fill out a form. If you wish to take one for yourself or someone else just help yourself. This is ideal for someone who may not want a large shawl or quilt, but could use a reminder that they are not alone and we are praying for them.

October Caregivers' Support Group Meeting Members of the congregation and friends are welcome to attend the guest speaker portion of the October 9th Caregivers' Support Group meeting which will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel. Planning for the threat of long-term care will be the topic of a presentation entitled, "The Top 10 Mistakes that Disqualify People From Medicaid/VA Benefits." Our speaker, Norman (Gene) Richards, is an elder law attorney who grew up in West Africa as the child of missionaries and is a member of Ward Presbyterian Church.
