Parish Announcements From Father O’Dell
2017 Sioux Falls Life Chain: October 1st, 2-3 p.m. Come join hundreds of other pro-life people as we pray for an end to abortion and a great-er respect for all human life from conception to natural death. Simply go to First Assembly
of God Church or O’Gorman and pick up a sign. Stand on the sidewalk of 41st Street and pray for 1 hour. Your presence WILL make a difference.
TURNING THE BAD INTO THE GOOD By: Fr. O’Dell
Every Sunday we celebrate suffering. We remember at each Mass that Christ
sacrificed Himself for each and every one of us on the Cross of Calvary so that we
would be redeemed. Christ did this for as a free gift for us but, He also told us that we
had to cooperate in our own personal salvation. We do this by picking up our cross
and following Him.
The Blessed Virgin Mary also suffered because of her devotion to God and
her love of her Son Jesus Christ. She suffered more perfectly than any other human
being - and she also serves as a model for us by teaching us to endure our sufferings.
From her, we learn how to embrace the crosses that come our way and then offer
them back to the Lord in love and praise.
Sometimes these sufferings have been physical. People who have picked up
the cross of illness, injury or persecution - even some folks who have suffered death
because of their faith. Sometimes, the suffering has been mental or emotional -
sufferings that entail loss of loved ones, changes in life circumstances, sadness -
things that can eat at our inner most being. Sometimes, the suffering has been about
things in our own lives - sometimes things that have happened to others. Whatever the
nature of the suffering - it is all about embracing the crosses that come our way.
We often wonder, however, about what possible good can come from
suffering. I have met people who tell me that nothing good comes out of having to
bear the cross in our lives. They have told me that the only thing that suffering causes
is people turning inward, folks wallowing in self-pity, causing them to become bitter,
and that it may even lead someone to begin to think of life in a delusional way. What
good can come from these four things?
I have to admit that all of these things are possible when we bear the cross.
Suffering is such a powerful experience that it can impact human beings in diverse
and even negative ways. On the other hand, there are thousands and thousands of
cases that are reported each year, that demonstrate how people have turned the
negative that suffering can bring with it - into the positive and redemptive experience
that has been touched by Jesus Christ.
It is true, for example, that suffering can cause us to turn in on ourselves.
When this happens, we focus only on what is happening on the inside. We become
self-absorbed and self-centered. Obviously, this is not a good thing. The opposite to
this is that suffering can also make us more empathic. It makes us understand and
appreciate the suffering that someone else might be experiencing and this allows us to
become a support to that person. When we act in a loving way, it comes back to us
ten-fold.
Suffering can cause us to live in self-pity. It’s called the “Ain’t it Awful”
syndrome. When we pity ourselves we fail to associate with others. We fail to do
enjoyable things out of fear that they will backfire on us. We become so busy
worrying about how bad things are that we fail to recognize the good things that come
our way, too. Self-pity makes us live in isolation. The opposite of this is that deep
suffering can also cause us to reach out in fellowship to those around us. Instead of it
being a simple “I” reality - it becomes a “We” experience. Suffering helps us
understand that we aren’t in anything alone - that we have a communion with all
others. That most of the source of our strength comes from God. The rest of it comes
from each other.
Suffering can cause huge problem by making someone just plain bitter. We
might begin to perceive that nothing in our world is good or worthwhile. We become
black and white thinkers - usually finding the fault in things around us. But, suffering
can also teach us to be a person of gratitude. (Continued) …..

St. Therese Centennial Feast
Sunday October 1 at 10:30 a.m.
The St. Therese Centennial Feast is coming October 1! Think about purchasing a
rose to help decorate our sanctuary for our Centennial Mass. Honor a family name,
family member or as we think of our Centennial, the persons over the years who have
been vital members of our St. Therese community. The deadline to have names
included in the Centennial Feast Program Booklet is September 17. Order forms are
available in the Gathering Space.
Other ways you can participate in the Centennial Feast are:
Sharing your outdoor planters with greenery & flowers still in bloom (such as
mums) to set by the tent stakes.
Baked goods and home grown produce for the Farmers Market.
Sign-up sheets will be out after Masses in early September for shift helpers. There
is a great need for many shifts during the Centennial Feast. Think about how you
can help.
Please contact Barbara & John Lockwood at 941-4981 or
[email protected] with any questions.

gratitude is first communicated to God it can be shared with others.
Last, suffering can get us thinking in wacky ways. When we think in
wacky ways we fail to see life as it really is and we begin to believe the lies that our
head tells us. Suffering helps us bend our lenses in such a way that all of life gets
out of perspective. Suffering can also cause us to become more honest with our-
selves and the world around us. This results in following the Way, the Truth and the
Life - not following something that is destined to lead us astray.
Suffering is about the cross. When we embrace it we are led into the light.
When we try to escape it - we are left living a lie. This week - embrace your cross
and learn to live in the freedom and joy of Jesus Christ.
May the peace of Jesus be with us all.

Centennial Corner
St. Therese died at a young age, yet all her life she aspired to be a saint.
Which is to say her life’s goal was to spend eternity in Heaven. It’s hard
to believe that St. Therese Parish was established 100 years ago. Time
will pass and there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop it. What we
can do is spend our time doing what fulfills our goals. Hopefully our most
important goal is the same as St. Therese’s, to spend eternity in Heaven.
