These activities complement the Girl Scout Journey “It’s Your Planet Love It! WOW! Wonders of Water!”. Background Information

We use water in all its forms.Waves crash on the beach. Ice cubes clink in a glass. A cloud of fog drifts in the air. Waves, ice, and fog—all of these are made of water. Water can be liquid, solid or gas.

All living things need water, and use it in different forms. Plants and animals on earth could not live without water.

Liquid water is used by fish to breathe, as the water passes through their gills. People need to drink water to live. In fact, two-thirds of our body is made of water. What other ways do people use liquid water?

Ice is solid water. A penguin uses a block of ice as a diving board. People use ice to keep food cold, and for fun activities, such as ice skating. What other ways do people use ice?

Steam is water as a gas. Tropical plants like warm, steamy air, as in Hawaii or a greenhouse. People use steam to iron clothes. What

other ways do people use steam?

Water moves through a cycle.All the water in the world is recycled over and over again. In the mountains, snow melts and rain falls. Water runs down through rivers, into the oceans. Water changes to a gas; it evaporates.

It rises to the sky. Rain falls and the cycle begins again.

LEGOLAND® Florida Resort Green Wave Facts

LEGOLAND® Florida Resort is dedicated to creating a cleaner, more eco-friendly environment for both the staff and Park guests. Green Wave spearheads projects such as cleanup and recycling initiatives.

WATER CONSERVATIONAll of the plants and vegetation throughout LEGOLAND Florida Resort and gardens are watered with well water. When it rains more than a half inch, the irrigation will not turn on. MPR nozzles allow the water to disperse slowly so there is less runoff and evaporation. We also make sure to plant Florida friendly plants that require less water. The irrigation system runs on timers and rain sensors.

COMPOSTING LEGOLAND sends green waste to be recycled. We obtain recycled vegetation to make mulch and compost for landscaping the entire park. Mulch absorbs water from rainfall or irrigation, and allows water to percolate into the soil instead of running off. Mulch also keeps soil cool, so less water evaporates, and more water gets to the plants.

How do you conserve water in your home?

Before and After the Visit: At Home Activity

Fountain FunMake your own fountain and see water pressure at work!

Materials: 2 liter plastic bottle, with bottom cut off This is the reservoir 2 liter plastic bottle, filled with water for pouring This is the water source 18 inches of plastic tubing to fit over the bottle’s neck This is the fountain A deep sided basin This is the basin

Turn the bottle cut in half upside down. Attach the tube to the bottle’s neck. Hold the bottle and tube in the basin as shown. Pour water from the full bottle into the cut bottle.

Water pressure pushes the water through the tube. The more the reservoir (cut bottle) is filled, the greater the water pressure. The water will try to get as high as the water level in the reservoir.
