Now on that same day (the day of Jesus resurrection) two of them were going

to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking

with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were

talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but

their eyes were kept from recognizing him. Luke 24:13-16

My dear friends,

I’ll let you in on a not-so-secret secret: for those in church leadership, the hours (and days) immediately

following the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection are kind of a fog. It’s a strange mixture of comatose-

like exhaustion and intense feelings of relief mixed with euphoria. Endurance athletes know the

feeling. Students completing their last final of the semester know the feeling… especially those on the

verge of graduation. Teachers know the feeling as they wrap up another year of instruction.

On the morning of this writing, the Tuesday after Easter, I drove into town at my usual time (about

7:30) and started the day with a two-mile walk around town, as I often do. My own post-Easter

exhaustion/euphoria being in full effect, I found myself absorbed in thoughts of where we’d been these

last seven seeks since Lent’s beginning, with those thoughts quickly moving to all of the things on the

to-do list for these next weeks at OSLC… everything from new member orientations to end-of-school

year celebrations to Confirmations to graduating Senior recognitions to… well, you get the drift.

Before I knew it, I was walking back up the church steps wondering where those two miles went and

what I might have missed seeing on such a beautiful morning, with the sun shining, the birds singing

and the wind not blowing. Nuts!

The story from Luke’s Gospel referenced at the beginning of this message is part of the Easter story

that does not show up in the lectionary this year (the assigned readings for each Sunday). Which is kind

of a bummer, as it’s one of my favorites. It encapsulates quite accurately how a lot of us feel after

another Easter has come. The exhaustion of the preceding days (and the wonder of what it all now

might mean) have a way of keeping us from seeing new life when it’s standing right in front of us. As

an Easter people, the driving question for us must always be, “Where, and in whom, is the risen Christ

making himself known and available to us today?” To be bogged down by our own baggage… our own

agendas… even our own exhausted euphoria… might just be to miss him.

Yesterday (the Monday after Easter) I spent the day turkey hunting with my son, Leith. He’s one of the

easiest hunting companions I’ve ever had, and I’ll tell you why: for Leith, it never seems to be about

the goal of a harvested critter. It’s always about the adventure, the trail, the journey. Armed not only

with shotgun, rifle or bow, but also with his ever-present camera, he’s constantly capturing beauty as it

appears before him. He doesn’t miss much. He’s a good example.

Perhaps I’ll go sit in the woods this evening.

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!

Pastor Stephan S Sandness.

Sunday, May 5,

is our litter clean-up event, again tackling I-90 eastbound, from mile marker 9 to mile marker 10. We will meet at the church at 12:45 PM, assign portions of the mile, and we anticipate about 1 hour to clean up the trash in this section. Please come prepared with sturdy shoes, long pants, thick gloves, brightly colored shirt; also hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen as needed. Trash bags, water, and construction vests will be provided. Sign-up sheets will be available between services May 5. In the event of rain, we will meet Sunday, May 19.

Questions? Call George (645-0107) or Julia Vansco (645-6519) or email [email protected]. Looking forward to seeing you there!

APRIL SHOWERS BRING FRESH FRUIT?

We can all be thankful that the recent showers were not white! Looking forward to green things rising from the ground and coloring the trees.

Mark your calendars for the 42nd Festival in the Park being held July 19-21. For any new members, OSLC has had a pie booth at the festival for the past 37 or so years. We make fruit pies only and cannot use egg or milk products. Pies are made at the church on the Thursday prior to that weekend and members also bake at home. Sign-up sheets will be posted prior to the event. We sell pie by the slice and If we have enough, we sell whole pies on Sunday afternoon. Something new tried last year to resounding success was the sale of 6 inch pies on Sunday afternoon. We will continue that this year. Pie tins are provided for your use.

Keep us in mind if have enough rhubarb to share again this year. We are always thankful for the abundance we have received in past years. Any other fruit you may grow and that would be ripe by the 3rd week in July would also be appreciated.

Keep tuned in here for any updates and developments. Any questions may be directed to me, Aly Scheurenbrand, at 630-0186 or [email protected]

Our Savior's Lutheran Church Council Minutes April 9, 2019, 6:30pm

1. The meeting was called to order by President Rod Custer at 6:32 PM. Members present were Pastor Stephan Sandness, Laura Campbell, Rod Custer, Troy Hight, Michelle Keil, Deb Kimbell, Cindy Koppinger, Kari Webb, Dawn Wood, Gary Dettman, Mark Harding, Dillon Haug, Tom Baloun and Jim Van’t Land.

2. Troy Hight shared a devotion based on John 14:25-31, noting Jesus words of God’s peace to His disciples at the time of His passion. Jesus offered His peace when He himself was in the midst of a difficult time, and that peace is available to us also even during difficult times.

3. Each Council member shared “What’s On Top” in their lives.

4. The Council dinner for tomorrow night was added to the agenda. The agenda was approved with a motion by Deb Kimbell and a second by Troy Hight. The motion carried.

5. March Council Meeting Minutes were reviewed. A motion was made to approve the minutes by Cindy Koppinger and a second by Troy Hight. The motion carried.

6. Mark Harding shared the March Treasurer’s report, noting that giving exceeded expenses by approximately $3500 for the month but we are still behind in contributions by nearly $13,200 year-to-date. The Treasurer’s report was approved with a motion by Jim Van’t Land and a second by Gary Dettman. The motion carried.

7. Staff Reports a. Laura Campbell – 3 of our Friendship Ministry

leaders did a training in Sturgis related to pastoral care in the congregation and in the community. The Lenten Prayer group has been connecting electronically and sharing their faith journeys.

b. Kari Webb – shared her work with the Belle Fourche St. James ELCA congregation, particularly how a recent medical situation has brought the congregation closer to each other.

8. Pastor Stephan – has been counseling the St. James congregation, noting that the 2 communities are very different communities, even though the physical distance is close. The “round robin” Wednesday rotation has been going well; working on preparation for Holy Week services. Confirmation class is nearing the end, so also preparing for the Confirmation service. Reminder that the Annual Meeting of the Congregational this coming Sunday. Council Nominees to be presented at the Annual Meeting on Sunday are Rod Custer (2nd term), Deb Kimbell (2nd term), Dillon Haug (2nd term), Tom Baloun, Helen Merriman.

9. Committee Updates a. Education – Deb Kimbell reported that

Celebration Sunday with potluck will be April 28; KidZone wrapped up in early April with some fun activities; no change in Camp registration numbers.

b. Mission Team – Cindy Koppinger noted Clothe-A-Kid is ramping up, June/July will be the donation period.

c. Communication – Michelle Keil shared that 500 inside “window clings” for cars have been ordered; the team met on April 4 to be trained in back end change procedures; continue to review and improve the content and preparing to go live “soon.”

d. Senior Ministry – Laura shared that there is a game day coming up in early May.

10. Conversation about helping with the Council dinner tomorrow evening, assuming that the weather does not cause the meal and the service to be cancelled.

11. The Certificate of Deposit (CD) at Black Hill Federal Credit Union is maturing in June. The Finance Committee presented an idea to use part of the current CD funds (particularly the monies that came from the selling of the parsonage) to finance several capital improvement projects for the church building and grounds. The Council agreed with this concept and Rod Custer will share it with the congregation at the Annual Meeting. Pastor Stephan also shared that for $3000 we could install an electronic, internet enabled door locking system for the north door – this would eliminate handing out keys and allow remote opening using a smartphone. Troy Hight made motion, seconded by Michelle Keil, to approve the $3000 to get this installed. Motion approved.

12. The South Dakota Synod Assembly is set for May 31 – June 1 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Rod, Kari and Dillon expressed interest in attending, along with Pastor Stephan and Laura Campbell; our church is allowed 6 lay members in addition to Pastor Stephan and Laura and expenses will be partially covered. On-line registration will begin in the near future.

13. The next Council meeting is the Council Retreat at The Living Room on Tuesday, May 14 at 6:00 PM and will include a meal.

14. The meeting was adjourned with a motion by Cindy Koppinger and a second by Troy Hight. Motion approved, and meeting adjourned at 7:55 PM with the Lord’s Prayer.

Respectfully submitted, Jim Van’t Land

The earth is a splendor with God’s beauty- the snow

has melted and left our grass and hillsides green.

Now those poor robins looking for food in the snow

can eat to their hearts content. God always has a

plan and takes care of even the smallest of

creatures. Our praises are being sent to you Lord

for another beautiful day and that Spring has

definitely arrived in the Black Hills of South

Dakota.

I would like to thank Esther Circle for hosting the

Mother, Daughter, Friend and Neighbor Brunch and

General Meeting. What a great turn out for this

very special event. All in attendance very much

enjoyed Jane Klug telling us about being a child of

God while assisting college students on journeys to

Africa and the Philippines. I very much appreciate

all the hard work that was put in to making “Going

Global” such a wonderful experience.

May 5th several women of WELCA will attend the

Lutheran Social Services Supper. If you are

interested in attending and supporting this

wonderful cause please contact Carlene Rosencranz

so that we can make sure we let them know you are

attending.

During the month of May there will be celebrations

for many young people in our church. There will be

20 members who will step forward and confirm

their faith in Jesus Christ. Thanks to Deborah

Circle for providing cross pendants for these special

young people. There will also be 19 who will

graduate from high school and a special thank to

Esther Circle for sending them off to their new

endeavors with an embroidered (OSLC) towel. The

wonderful quilters will give each of the seniors a

quilt as well. These gifts are a reminder of God’s

love and our love for these young people.

I am going to give one more shout out and thank

you and that is to the funeral committee of our

church. Our tireless leader of this group is Annette

Johnson and she had the committee working like a

well greased machine (can you tell I was a farmer’s

daughter). So many women of the church not only

donated time and elbow grease but delicious salads

and desserts. It takes many to make the workload

light and this can definitely be said about our

funeral committee. Thank you to all who help.

God’s beauty is all around us. Please enjoy his

creation.

Baby Care Kits

are due June 15

Esther Circle encourages anyone to check out the Baby Care Kit Display in the fellowship hall and donate a kit or one (or more) articles towards a kit. Please place items or complete kits in the basket near the receptionist desk in the Fellowship Hall.

Each kit should contain: 2 long or short-sleeved gowns or sleepers (without feet), 1 hand towel, dark color recommended, 2 receiving blankets, 2 lightweight cotton t-shirts, 4 cloth diapers, 2 pairs of socks, 2 bath-size bars of gentle soap, in original wrapping, 2 diaper pins, 1 jacket, sweater or sweatshirt with a hood or include a baby cap

Wrap items in one of the receiving blankets and secure with the safety pins. Gently used, clean

items can be substituted for new ones. An entire kit gets kind of expensive, single items really help as well. Do not enclose kit in plastic bags.

LUTHERAN CAMPUS MINISTRY @ BHSU If you haven’t stopped by The Living Room recently, you should come by and check out the major changes! With special Thanks to Rod Custer and Gary Dettman, our kitchen is looking (and functioning) great! We have new countertops and cabinets, as well as a dishwasher, along with real dishes provided by an anonymous donor. It feels much more welcoming, and definitely more eco friendly! Just using the dishes at LCM events has cut our waste dramatically!

Thank you all for helping us to go green at The Living Room - as children of God, we are called to care for creation, and it makes a big impact when we do our best to Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle. We have worked to make The Living Room a styrofoam-free zone, and to reduce our overall plastic use. We try to use reusable shopping bags, and have also installed, energy efficient lighting, along with new, more efficient doors. We have also started collecting our compostables, and hope to start a “Giving Garden” this summer.

At The Living Room, our weekly events include our Monday Night Meal, which is supper and fellowship followed by Bible study and conversation. This weekly gathering has continued to bring students together into a tight knit community of faith. We also gather on Wednesdays for Dinner Church, a reminder of God's promise to us in Communion. There is a short liturgy, entwined with our meal, discussion, and scripture. Dinner church has continued to be a time for the traditional college students and the Adopt-A-Mom group to get to know each other. We’d also love to get to know you! There are still a few meals left this semester, and you can sign up to help with them at https://mealtrain.com/ol8ql4.

Once again, the joint LCM of BHSU and SDSMT will sponsor a trip to the Pine Ridge Retreat Center for a cultural immersion experience over the Easter weekend. Participants learn about our brothers & sisters who live on the reservation, and walk with them through the journey of Holy Week. The goal of the retreat is, in addition to taking a break from school, to bring to light the people and traditions of Pine Ridge, and how we can continue to build relationships in order to recognize and empower the belief that we are all related - Mitakuye Oyasin. When we recognize this, we truly join together in community, as we are called by Christ to do. This tradition is open to our entire LCM community, which includes YOU. If you’re interested in joining us, the deadline to sign up is April 15.

The semester is flying by, and we will have five students graduating from BHSU, and one from SDSMT on May 4th. Please keep out students in your prayers as they start a new journey!

The Cooperative Ministry Agreement between the boards of Lutheran Campus Ministry at SDSMT and Evangelical Lutheran Campus Ministry at BHSU has been in operation for five academic years. Through this agreement, we’ve been able to keep vital ministry happening in both Rapid City and Spearfish. In order to make our organizations even more streamlined, the boards have decided to come together into a single entity, still serving both schools, still offering opportunities for community, service, fellowship, discipleship, worship, and Bible study, still housed in The Living Room and The Luther House, but under one, new name: LuMin: The Hills. This change will enable us to have one board and one accounting system, and to expand to post-secondary schools beyond just Mines & BH. We already have students from SDSU Nursing, USD nursing, and WDT participating in LuMin activities, and now our name reflects the welcome we extend to all, not just folks from certain schools.

Thank you again for all that you do to support LuMin: The Hills in our mission to welcome folks in our academic communities!

Peace,

Rachel Nelson, Director Lumin: The Hills, Spearfish and Rapid City 605-646-3241
