The Mviarie Tremaihe Medal / La Médaille Marie Tremaine

The Marie Tremaine Medal is awarded annually by theBibliographical Society of Canada/La Société bibliographique duCanada for outstanding service to Canadian bibliography and fordistinguished publication in either English or French in that field,preferably to a member of the Society or to a Canadian citizen.Members of the Council of the Society are not eligible for the awardwhile they are in office. The Tremaine Medal Committee invitesnominations for this award.

r999: The Tremaine Medal Awarded To Carl Spadoni

At the Annual Meeting and Conference of the Bibliographical Society of Canada on9-12 June 1999 in Sherbrooke, the following citation was read by Ann Yandle, thePresident of the Society.

The Council of the Bibliographical Society of Canada, onthe unanimous recommendation of its Tremaine ~MedalCommittee, is very pleased to award the I999 Tremaine Medalin Canadian Bibliography to Dr. Carl Spadoni "for out-standing services to Canadian bibliography and fordistinguished publication in that field."

What a joy it is to honour one of our own! On the recom-mendation of the Tremaine Medal Committee, the Councilof the Bibliographical Society of Canada takes great pleasurein awarding the 1999 Tremaine Medal for outstanding serviceto Canadian bibliography, and for distinguished publicationto Dr. Carl Spadoni.

Dr. Spadoni received his Ph.D. in 1978 from theUniversity of Waterloo and his M.L.S. from the Universityof Toronto in 1980. He began his career in the WilliamReady Division of Archives and Research Collections atMcMaster University, first as the Bertrand Russell Archivistand currently as Research Collections Librarian.

His range is astounding, as is his capacity for sustainedwork to the highest scholarly standard. Dr. Spadoni's list ofpublications is long and significant, as is his list of awards andgrants. Author, or co-author, of five books, two ofwhich werepublished in the past year, his major contribution has been inthe field of bibliography.

Dr. Spadoni has received a number of grants from theSocial Sciences and Humanities Research Council; two haveassisted in the publication of astounding Canadian biblio-graphies. In 1990, Dr. Spadoni undertook a major scholarlywork with Judy Donnelly, A Bibliography ofMcClellaEnd andStewart Imprints, 1909-1985: A Publisher's Legacy. Itincludes his scholarly historical introduction, full descriptivebibliographic entries for almost 3700 titles, appendices onimprints not located, archival resources, as well as a land-mark appendix on series, and two indexes. A model of its

type, this bibliography was published in 1994 by ECW7 Press.That very year Dr. Spadoni embarked upon another

major work, again with the assistance of a SSHRCC grant. ABibliography of Stephen LeacockE (ECW Press, CI998) can bedescribed as "one of Canada's premier bibliographies, if notthe foremost in its field": a massive descriptive, analyticaland historical bibliography.

In 1998 Dr. Spadoni received his second Marie TremaineFellowship, this one to prepare a critical edition of Leacock'sSunshine Sk·etches of a Little Town. Anna mirabilis continuedwith the publication by the University of Toronto Press ofhis edition of Leacock's My Recollection of Chicago; and, TheDoctrine ofLaissez Fadire.

~One wonders whatever does he find to do in his sparetime? Much of it has been spent in the service of theBibliographical Society of Canada. An active member of theSociety for many years, Dr. Spadoni has been a conferenceprogramme convenor, a member of Council, a presenter ofpapers, a productive contributor of articles and bookreviews. After serving as English Book Review Editor, hebecame General Editor of the Society's major publicationPadpers of the Bibliographical Society of Canada/Cabiers de klaSodiéti bibliographique du Canada and served in thatcapacity from 1993 to 1997-

Much to this has been accomplished during Dr. Spadoni'smost active period as a bibliographer, and while working full-time at the Mills Memorial Library, McMaster University,where he teaches a graduate course, "Bibliography andProfessional Skills," for the Department of English. He alsoserves the broader scholarly community by his activities onadjudication committees (SSHRCC) and in refereeingsubmissions to scholarly presses and journals.

Carl Spadoni is a scholar, "and a ripe and good one"![Henry VIIr, Act Iv, Sc. ii, I.41] His disciplined philosopher'smind and firm determination demand almost impossiblyhigh standards of himself and others; but, he has the gift ofinspiring excellence. There is no question that he has alwayssought the highest bibliographical good, and today he is our"philosopher king."

It is customary for the recipients of awards to thank their parents,their piano teachers, and a host of other people in the murky past.My parents are very nice people. I am naturally fond of them, butthey know nothing of the mysteries of bibliography. As for my pianoteacher, after a few lessons, she bluntly informed my parents that itwas a complete waste of time for me to continue taking pianolessons, and that was the end of my disastrous career as a pianoprodigy. So let us forget parents, piano teachers, aunts and uncles,and strangers that I may have met in train stations or in airports.They have nothing to do with my bibliographical achievements.With regard to my immediate family, that is to say, my wife and twosons, I hope that they have not suffered too greatly while I havelaboured on my bibliographical endeavours. I wish that they werehere on this splendid evening to share in this personal triumph.

More than twenty years ago, when I had finished a Ph.D. inphilosophy and was hopelessly unemployed, I went to the libraryschool at the University of Toronto. Francess G. Halpenny, theDirector of the Faculty, interviewed me, and said that I was fitenough to complete the M.L.S. degree. In my second year atToronto, I discovered the intellectual wonders of bibliography, rarebooks, archives, and the history of the book. That inevitably changedthe course of my career. Richard Landon, the Director of theThomas Fisher Rare Book Library, was my inspiration at the time.The young and beautiful Pat Fleming taught me about Canadianaand humanities reference tools. I was also lucky to meet BruceWhiteman, who graduated a year before me at Toronto. He sharedmy enthusiasm for books and bibliography. We were soon comrades-in-arms and colleagues at McMaster University.

I joined the Bibliographical Society of Canada in 1979, and it wasthen that I first heard about the Marie Tremaine Medal. I have hada long and fruitful association with the Bibliographical Society ofCanada. Moreover, I owe much to many of its members who haveworked with me either in editing the P~apers/Cabiers or on my variousbibliographical projects. I am indebted to all of you for yourcooperation, kindness, and encouragement over the years.

I treasure this medal very much. I am deeply honoured to be itsrecipient. Bless the memory of Marie Tremaine. May the Bibliographi-cal Society of Canada continue to flourish and to carry out its missioninspired by her great bibliographical legacy. Thank you very much.

Le Dr. Spadoni reçut son doctorat en 1978 del'Université W;aterloo et sa M/attrise en bibliothéconomie del'Université de Toronto en I980. II débuta sa carrière à laWilliam Ready Division of Archives and ResearchCollections de I'Université McMaster, d'abord commearchiviste de la collection Bertrand Russell et par la suitecomme bibliothécaire des collections de recherche, postequ'il occupe présentement. L'éventail de ses compétences estimpressionnant, ainsi que sa capacité à produire un travailsoutenu de la plus haute qualité. La liste des publications duDr. Spadoni est longue et importante, ainsi que celle de sesprix et bourses. Auteur, ou co-auteur, de cinq ouvrages, dontdeux publids durant cette dernière année, sa contribution laplus importante a été dans le domaine de la bibliographie.

Carl Spadoni a été le récipiendaire de bourses du Conseilde Recherche en Sciences sociales dont deux f'ont aidé à

publier des bibliographies de premier plan. En 1990, Carlentreprit avec Judy Donnelly un travail bibliographique trèsimportant intitulé A Bibliogradphy of McClellaznd and StewartImprints, rgop--zp85;: A Publisher's Legacy. La bibliographierenferme une introduction historique, les notices

bibliographiques complètes pour près de 3700 titres, desappendices concernant les publications non localisées, lessources archivistiques, les collections et deux index. Unmodèle du genre, cette bibliographie fut publiée par ECWPress en I994·

Cette même année, Carl entreprit un autre ouvragemajeur, encore une fois avec l'aide du Conseil de Recherche.On peut qualifier A Bibliography ofStephen Leacock· (ECWPress 1998) d'une des plus importantes bibliographiespublides au Canada, probable-ment la meilleure dans cedomaine: une énorme bibliographie descriptive, analytiqueet historique.

En 1998, Carl mérita sa seconde bourse Marie Tremaine,celle-ci pour prdparer une édition critique de Su~nshineSk·etches ofa Little Town de Leacock. Cette anna mirabilis sepoursuivit avec la publication par les Presses de l'Universitéde Toronto de son édition critique de Mly Recollection ofChicago; and The Doctrine ofLaissez Faire de Leacock.

On se demande ce qu'il peut bien faire dans ses tempslibres! Une grande partie de ce temps libre est consacrée à laSociété bibliographique du Canada. Membre actif de laSocidté depuis plusieurs années, Carl Spadoni futorganisateur de conférences, membre du Conseil,conférencier et auteur prolifique d'articles et de comptesrendus. Après avoir occupé le poste de rédacteur descomptes rendus anglais, il devint directeur de la principalepublication de la Sociérd, les Cabiers de laz Socidedbibliographique du~ Canada/Papers of the BibliographicalSociety of Canada, poste qu'il occupa de I993 à 1997.

II accomplit un travail remarquable de bibliographetout en travaillant à temps plein à la Mills Memorial Libraryde l'U_~niversité McMaster oix il donne le cours "Bibliographyand Professional Skills" au Département d'Ainglais. Il sertégalement le Groupe des études savantes en siégeant sur descomités d'évaluation de demnandes de bourses et d'articles dediverses publications.Carl Spadoni est vraiment un savant.Par son esprit discipliné de philosophe et sa détermination,il exige la perfection de lui-même et des autres et if a le dond'inspirer l'excellence. II n'y a aucun doute qu'il a toujourscherché à atteindre les plus hauts sommets de l'excellencebibliographique et if est aujourd'hui notre <<roi philosophe>>.

Carl Spadoni a re'pondu de la façon suivante:~

C'est une tradition parmi les récipiendaires de récompenses deremercier leurs parents, leurs professeurs de piano et une fouled'autres personnes qui peuplent leur obscur passé. Mes parents sontdes gens très bien. Bien entendu, je les aime beaucoup, mais ils neconnaissent rien des mystères de la bibliographie. En ce qui concernemon professeur de piano, elle informa mes parents, après quelqueslegons seulement, que c'était une perte de temps totale pour moi decontinuer à suivre des cours de piano, et cela mit un terme à unedisastreuse carrière de petit prodige. Alors oublions les parents, lesprofesseurs de piano, les oncles et les tantes ainsi que les inconnusque j'ai pu rencontrer dans les gares de train et les aéroports. Ils n'ontjoué aucun rôle dans mes réussites bibliographiques. Pour ce qui estde ma famille immédiate, c'est-à-dire ma femme et mes deux fils,j'espère qu'ils n'ont pas trop souffert pendant que je peinais à mestravaux bibliographiques. J'aimerais qu'ils soient ici en cettemagnifique soirie pour partager ce triomphe personnel.

Il ya plus de vingt ans, ayant termind mon doctorat en philosophieet n'ayant aucun espoir de trouver du travail, je me suis dirigé versl'école de bibliothéconomie à l'U~-niversite de Toronto. Frances G.

Halpenny, directeur de la Facultd, m'a interviewd et m'a dit que jesemblais assez intelligent pour compléter mon diplôme debibliothicaire. A ma deuxième année à Toronto, j'ai découvert lesmerveilles intellectuelles de la bibliographie, des livres rares, desarchives et de l'histoire du livre. Cet évènement a certainementorienté ma carrière. Richard Landon, directeur de la bibliothèqueThomas Fisher, fut mon inspiration à cette époque. La jeune et bellePat Fleming m'a révilé les secrets du Canadiana et les outils deréférence en sciences humaines. Je fut très chanceux de faire laconnaissance de Bruce Whiteman, gradué un an avant moi à Toronto.II partagea mon enthousiasme pour les livres et la bibliographie.

J'ai adhéré à la Société bibliographique du Canada en 1979 et c'està ce moment-là que j'ai entendu parler pour la première fois de lamédaille Tremaine. J'ai eu une longue et féconde association avec laSocidtd bibliographique du Canada. De plus, j'ai une dette envers sesmembres qui ont travaillé avec moi à rédiger les Cabiers/Papers oulors de mes nombreux travaux bibliographiques. Je vous doisbeaucoup pour votre coopération, votre gentillesse et votte soutienpendant ces années.

Cette médaille est pour moi très précieuse. Je suis très honord d'en
