A MESSAGE Welcome to our second newsletter. Summer is over and our Winter Residents and Visitors are already showing up. The threat of hurri- canes seems to have subsided for now, and I’m sure all of us in Sarasota know how lucky we are to have escaped serious damage to our homes and offices. Some of us went without electricity for a day to three, and one of our showroom displays had a ceiling collapse due to roof damage, but all-in-all, we came through it rel- atively unscathed. Our neighbors to the north and south of us did not fare nearly as well and our thoughts and prayers are still with them. Having completed changing out five displays and preparing to change two more, we are ready for another season. Please stop by to say “hello” and see all that’s new in the show- room. Whether looking for kitchens, baths orcustom furniture, our clients are signifi-

cantly more knowledgeable than ever before. They know that the kitchen is no longer solelyfor the preparation and cooking of food, butalso a place for the sharing of food, a gatheringplace and a place to spend quality time withfamily and friends. This knowledge is chang-ing our approach. It is requiring more inputfrom our clients when planning the space, choosing a design, select-ing appliances, flooring, cabinetry, countertops, aswell as window and walltreatments. Our clientsare coming to EuroTechCabinetry, Inc. armedwith a great deal of infor-mation. Frequently, appli-ances, flooring and coun-tertops have either beenselected or the choiceshave been narrowed sub-stantially. Additionally, they bring pictures andarticles gleaned frommagazines, newspapers and the internet reflect-ing their taste in style, color and design. Theyalso have been showing an interest in cabinetryconvenience features, accessories, constructionmethods and more. For example, today’sclients are now familiar with drawer construc-tion using the dovetail joint or doweling meth-ods as well as hidden undermount drawerguides or top-of-the-line accuride drawerguides. They also want to know if the drawersare made of solid wood and are they full-exten-sion. They want to know what materials theproducts are made of. Is it particleboard or ply-wood? Is the interior surface vinyl, melamineor wood veneer? What kind of hinges are beingused - do they open the door 90°, 125° or 176°?They are familiar with the different types offinishes; glazing on stains and painted surfacesand different finishing techniques such asantiquing, burnishing, wearthrough, distressingand more.

What does this mean for us, the design profes-sionals? In some ways it makes our jobs easierbecause some of our questions are alreadyanswered in the beginning of the designprocess. In other ways, it makes our job morechallenging. We must be on our toes, knowl-edgeable of all new products and offerings, andwilling to learn even more. We have to bebecause today’s client not only deserves it, butinsists upon it.

It’s not often that a kitchen designer is fortunateenough to work on a project that’s almost com-pletely designed before he meets the client. Butwhen EuroTech Kitchen Designer, Jim Judsen, met Interior Designer, Ellen Levine, he was for-tunate indeed! Ellen gave Jim her sketches ofhow she envisioned the kitchen and Jim took itfrom there. Jim and his design team were ableto take Ellen’s design concepts and translatethem into plans and elevations, complete withthe technical and engineering details necessaryfor fabrication and installation.

Last October, Ellen found a 70’s condo that “tookher breath away.” It wasn’t the shag carpet, avo-cado green refrigerator, or the foil wallpaper. Itwas the window, the views of Gulf and Bay, andthe vision she had of how the condo could lookwith walls knocked out and the skeleton exposed.

In order to direct the eyes immediately to theviews, the design was kept very sleek and min-imalistic. Exposing the concrete columns andceilings (duct work, conduit and all) are a dra-matic counterpoint to the hi-gloss laminate sur-faces in the kitchen. The hi-gloss “sycamore”laminate is a beautiful contrast to the exposedmetal ducting and grey concrete ceilings. The aqua glass in the upper cabinets andthe island cabinetry add visual appeal.Relating to the sand, sea, and nature,Ellen chose sand colors, aqua blues andneutrals. For interest and relief, abit of red was added

(look at Ellen’s bar stools and very cool lightsat the island).

The kitchen cabinetry needed to feel more likefurniture, now that it was exposed to the livingarea. The stainless steel legs allow the island tofloat off the floor, appearing lighter and moregraceful. Because there are no upper cabinetsat the island, we placed dish racks in the largeisland drawers. The island also houses theGaggenau down-draft grill and cooktop.

We were able to facilitate Ellen’s desire to“continue the same cabinets into the rest of thespace.” A once very dreary and long tunnel-like hallway has now become an angled lami-nate wall panel system that hides the door tothe powder room and a door to the hall closet.

Ellen told us that she was “thrilled with the qual-ity of cabinetry that EuroTech provided. JimJudsen managed and monitored the progresswhile I was at a distance. I now have an incred-ible ‘Eurostyle’ kitchen in my Loft on the Gulf.”
