A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR HOCKER Dear Friends, As we move into the year of clear vision, 2020, I thought it was time to declutter my office at home. As I was reorganizing and cleaning, I was drawn to my favorite Icon as it sat on one of my bookcases. The Icon of the Trinity is truly captivating and when you look at this Icon you become a part of it. This window into mystery was created in the 15 th century by artist, Saint Andrei Rublev, who was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1988. The ‘Hospitality of Abraham, or the Trinity Icon, is one of my favorite Icons. Andrei Rublev brings a soft and comforting encounter with the Trinity. This Icon also brings with it a sense of mystery, an unknowing of the unknowable. I can imagine myself as Abraham, who was resting in the noon day sun, when I see the strangers on the path. It is not until they begin to speak and sit down to the hospitality provided, that Abraham and Sarah realize who these three strangers are. This painting attempts to point beyond itself, inviting a sense of both the beyond and the communion that exists in our midst. The three figures engaged in a divine dance; a dance of relationship. According to this Icon it is the Trinity that is sitting before Abraham. At this moment when looking at this icon I see what Abraham saw. This is an amazing opportunity to witness God in this luminous unexplainable way of three in one. Three winged strangers with their luminosity expressed within a halo. They appear to be sitting down to an extravagant, yet simple feast surrounded in light and gold. This mystery is beyond Abraham’s or my understanding how God can be here now to commune with just me. I feel as if I am a child looking at the big people’s table. It looks as if there is room for one more person at the table, yet I do not feel worthy of sitting at this table. I witness the three as parents who delight in me, little me in all of God’s glory, who is wanted and loved as a child. We are invited to this table by God to participate in this divine dance. This is a dance of communion, relationship, and love. Icons and religious art can be used as a spiritual practice to engage in the divine dance. This spiritual practice is known as Visio Divina, or ‘divine seeing’. Visio Divina invites one to encounter the divine through images which allows the viewer to experience the divine in a unique and powerful way. This type of prayer or spiritual practice invites a seeking of truth of the heart rather than truth of the facts. Allow yourself the grace given to you to experience the fullness of emotion. Enter the image as if you are present in the scene. Try to identify with the characters that are present or may not be present. Place yourself physically in the setting. What does it feel like? What smells and sounds are in the air? Stay with the image longer than you may think you need to. What stirred within you? How are you relating to the characters and physical environment of the scene? This practice may help you find comfort and draw you closer to God. Ignatius of Loyola wrote, “All the things in this world are gifts of God, created for us, to be the means by which we can come to know God better, to love more surely, and serve more faithfully.” Yes, you—and all of creation—are invited to sit at the divine table. You are called “to consciously participate in the divine dance of loving and being loved,” as Wm. Paul Young, the best selling author of The Shack, writes in Richard Rohr’s book, The Divine Dance. ESSAGE FROM PASTOR RANKIN

This window into mystery was created in the 15th century by artist, Saint Andrei Rublev, who was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1988.

Ignatius of Loyola wrote, “All the things in this world are gifts of God, created for us, to be the means by which we can come to know God better, to love more surely, and serve more faithfully.”

Yes, you—and all of creation—are invited to sit at the divine table. You are called “to consciously participate in the divine dance of loving and being loved,” as Wm. Paul Young, the best selling author of The Shack, writes in Richard Rohr’s book, The Divine Dance.

DECEMBER CONSISTORY MEETING HIGHLIGHTS CONSISTORY LEADERSHIP FOR 2020

Consistory approved the following for Trinity’s Consistory leadership for 2020: President: George DeLong Vice President: Tim Geiger Secretary: Scott Owens Treasurer: Ken Zimmerman Financial Secretary: Dan Otthofer

OUR GIFTS TO OTHERS The Board of Deacons made a motion to send $500 from the undesignated gifts in the Our Gifts to Others account to support Hartman Center and to send the $697 balance of undesignated funds to Penn Central Conference as an additional OCWM payment. The motion was unanimously passed by Consistory. The Board of Deacons made a motion to send the $100 balance for local missions gifts in Our Gifts to Others account to Bethany Christian Services to support their safe families for children program. The motion was unanimously approved by Consistory. The Board of Deacons made a motion supporting the motion of the Stewardship Committee to award a $1,000 grant to St. Luke's UCC in Lititz in support of their free lunch program. The motion was unanimously passed by Consistory.

PASTOR HOCKER’S SCHEDULE Due to Pastor Hocker’s work schedule at PennDot during the winter months, he will not be with us much during January and February. He will be preaching on January 26 and assisting with the Ash Wednesday services on February 26. We will also see him at a few meetings in January and February. Pastor Hocker will return to regular worship assistance and pastoral care in March. Stewardship XXXX by Rev. Jack Esbenshade Starting out the year, we often make a list of resolutions. For some it becomes a realistic map to follow. For most it is an exercise in wishful thinking. Instead of this time worn and usually futile activity, I’d like to propose a different approach as we begin a new year and a new decade. There is a television advertisement for a health insurance company that depicts people in various settings. There is a retired couple sitting at a campfire, a farmer feeding hay to his livestock, a grandmother baking in her kitchen with grandchildren at her side and two fellas sitting at a sports arena. The voice over says, “How would you tell your life story in just six words?” And then the six words of each person appears on the screen. What an interesting exercise. What a challenge. How might you express concisely what describes and defines who you are in six words? What is important to you? What do you value? Rather than resolving to exercise more, eat less and lose weight, in 2020 consider how you might tell your life story in six (or seven or eight) words. I’m not sure anyone will ask you what you’ve come up with, but I think the process of reflection and expression are a great way to start off the new year.

*** Dear Trinity UCC, When a youth is place at Bethany, they are scared, angry, and without hope. Most will come with the clothes on their back and if they are lucky, they may have a small bag of personal belongings. They are seeking for someone to listen, provide a guiding hand, and care about them. Though it may be difficult for them at first, our youth begin to see that there are so may new opportunities available to them at Bethany. During this holiday season, we thank you for your supporting our local youth through their process of healing. The gifts you have donated will provide many smiling faces throughout the holiday season and beyond. Thank you for thinking of our youth during this time of year. Your ongoing support will help them to continue to heal and take back their lives. Sincerely, Carolyn Shultz Spano, Director of Development

INDOOR WINTER FUN Your child will benefit greatly from participating in these activities with you at home. Remember, the benefit is in the process of doing, not the product created! Encourage your child in conversation with

questions: How does it feel? What does it look like? How much or how many? Another fun interaction is to simply describe what you see your child doing. They will LOVE it.
