The pace, development and success of The Dean Trust Teaching School continues to accelerate.
We were delighted to have been invited to present at Manchester Town Hall on Delivering
Effective Initial Teacher Training (ITT). This was an opportunity for us to share with colleagues
our innovative provision and its successes. In addition to this, we are hosting the ITT North West
Regional Ofsted Conference at the Teaching School in March.
It has also been an honour to receive an invitation to join the development team for the new
Apprenticeship Trailblazers for both the Teaching Assistant and Teaching Apprentices.
Contributing to the shaping of new qualifications is always a privilege as it enables us to be at the
forefront of the ever-changing educational system.
Within this edition, you will read about how we are extending our leadership provision with Best
Practice Network, Lord Derby Academy’s recent Ofsted inspection outcome and developments
within Teaching, Learning and Leadership, our Maths Hub and SCITT.
Thank you once again for your interest in our Teaching School and your continued support.

The Outstanding Leaders Partnership (OLP) is the leading
provider of school leadership qualifications in the North
West. From September 2017, the Outstanding Leaders
Partnership, which is led by Ashton on Mersey School and
managed by Best Practice Network, will be a national
brand. OLP are joining forces with licensed leadership
providers in the East of England, East Midlands and a
further network of Teaching School Alliances across the
country to create one cohesive, school-led partnership.
‘OLP National’ will enable the regional partnerships to
extend and enhance their existing programme offer,
starting with the inclusion of a new National Professional
Qualification for Executive Leaders. This school-led
partnership will extend their work with Teaching School

We hosted our second SLE recruitment day for this
academic year in January. We are pleased to announce
that all five applicants were successful and are now
designated Specialist Leaders of Education with The Dean
Trust Teaching School.
Many congratulations to:

10th March 2017, 9.30am – 3.00pm. This valuable
training will be available to any new SLEs designated to
other Teaching Schools who may not be hosting the event
at this time.
The programme provides essential information about the
role and will equip SLEs with the tools and techniques for
effective school-to-school support. It also gives SLEs the
opportunity to network and share best practice to ensure
they can demonstrate measurable impact from their
deployments.
Bookings can be made by email to
[email protected] or by calling the

Pupil Premium Reviewer Training with NCTL Accreditation
Specialist Leaders of Education
In partnership with Painsley Catholic College in Staffordshire, we are now hosting Pupil
Premium Reviewer training which will provide NCTL Pupil Premium Reviewer
Accreditation. Building on the success of the NCTL pilot, which has now trained over 70
NLEs in carrying out effective pupil premium reviews in the region, this one day programme
will equip attendees to carry out accredited internal and/or external reviews, as well as
share the latest guidance and best practice from the DfE. This training was initially targeted
at NLEs and LLEs, although SLEs and others who may be deployed on a School to School
support commission, can also attend.
We are proud to have accredited 43 delegates which includes a Senior Leader from each of
the seven Dean Trust schools. This will ensure that we have a consistent approach to the
effective provision of teaching, learning and wider inclusion for our disadvantaged and
vulnerable pupils.
The next programme will run in the Summer term on Friday 23rd June 2017. If you would
like to book a place, please go to our website for full details and an application form at

Lord Derby Academy – The Journey to ‘Good’
One of our Trust schools, Lord Derby Academy, have
recently had their Ofsted inspection on 10th & 11th January
2017. Ofsted commented that ‘Good behaviour is the
norm at the school' and acknowledged that 'as a result
of the huge shift in culture, raising of aspirations and
higher expectations, pupils currently in the school are
making faster progress across all year groups and
across subjects'. The Dean Trust, having taken over the
former Huyton Arts and Sports Centre for Learning when
it was a Grade 4 school and in serious difficulties, is
pleased to receive the Ofsted report that recognises the
great strides the Academy has made in a short time.
Miss Vicky Gowan, Head of School,
commented “Whilst leaders fully
acknowledge that there is still,
undoubtedly, work to be done (and
action planning has already started),
we are very pleased that inspectors
have appreciated the journey we are
on. We are resolute and determined to
continue our upward trajectory. We
are extremely pleased that the school
has been commended for its high

standards of behaviour and that the desire of staff,
parents and pupils for the school to succeed has been
recognised.” Leaders at the school believe that pupils
want to be at school and want to learn. As such, the
trajectory of improvement will increase significantly and
will enable them to move to ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’.
Maths Hub
Teaching, Learning and Leadership (CPD)
This term has seen successful delivery of The Power of Coaching, Train the Trainer to 10
delegates, many of whom attended previous training at The Dean Trust Teaching School;
always a positive sign.
We are currently exploring new programmes that we intend to add to our Teaching, Learning
and Leadership offer. We recognise that school budgets and the time of year are influencing
the engagement of teachers and leaders with CPD provision.
In conjunction with UKFast, we are developing a programme to support teachers in the
delivery of the new Computer Science specification. Four separate sessions are to be offered
in the summer term. Details will be shared when available but it may be worth noting the
following dates: 9th June, 22nd June, 27th June and 3rd July.
We are piloting a programme in English as an Additional Language (EAL) with Dean Trust
Ardwick, with the subsequent intention of adding such a programme to our wider offer.
National Support and Teaching Schools are playing an increasing role in school improvement.
As such, administrative staff in this area make a crucial contribution and we are planning a
Training Workshop/Conference for such a target audience on 16th June.
The Primary Specialist Partnership Network is now fully operational, the five groups having
met for the first time this term with action plans in place to support their collaborative
development.

Learning and Leadership
Mrs J Kenny Director of Maths
Hub
Maths Hub Conference

passionate about Maths! The Key Note Speakers include Ems Lord, Director of NRICH and
Andrew Jeffrey, The Mathemagician. A range of workshops and market stalls will be available

Primary Mastery
Our Primary Mastery Specialist, Sarah Coldbeck hosted two events this term. Introduction to
Textbook Training enabled delegates to understand principles behind Shanghai and Singapore
textbooks, helping teachers to make informed decisions about which book was best for their
school. Year One Cluster Training gave the opportunity for practice to be shared with support
from the Hub’s Mastery Specialist Teachers. Year One provides an important foundation for
the development of mastery teaching across the primary phase. Key principles and pedagogy
were explored during this session to support Year One staff in teaching for mastery.
On Monday 27th February and Thursday 2nd March Sarah is hosting follow-up sessions to our
successful Shanghai Teacher Exchange observations. The sessions will give delegates an
opportunity to further explore key elements of Maths teaching. Key pedagogy and practice
will be explored in each session including lesson structure and key teaching principles to
further develop mastery teaching approaches.

In addition to Kate Baddeley and Helen Parkinson presenting ‘Building a successful SCITT’
at the Delivering Effective Initial Teacher Training forum, we are also hosting the North
West Regional Ofsted Conference, hosted by Angela Milner, Lead ITE Ofsted Inspector. The
objectives of this event are to:
share the key findings from Ofsted’s 2016 ITE inspections and re-inspections
share the results of discussions with leaders and managers about the
recommendations for ITE in the Teacher Workload Review reports
provide opportunities to discuss recent inspections and best practice, to reflect and
network with other regional ITE partnerships
SCITT Trainees
This term saw our trainees starting their ‘contrasting’ placement; going into a new school
can be a challenge but it is also a great way of gaining new perspectives to take into their
final placement. As part of our programme it is the intention that our trainees gain a broad
School for a Science session. The SCITT is currently busy recruiting for 2017/18 courses.
We have availability in the following programmes: General Primary, Primary with PE,
Primary with Maths, Secondary PE with Maths or Biology, English with SEN, Physics,
Geography, MFL, and RE.

Employment
We are thrilled to announce that four of our trainees have already secured employment for September 2017.
Congratulations to Tom Fletcher who will teaching Geography at North Chadderton School; Andy Ritchie who will be
teaching Science at Dean Trust Ardwick and finally Cara Jennings and Bianca Tranter who will both be starting at Forest
Gate Academy.
SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training)

centre based sessions, so it
is great when they get to go
into a partner school and
learn from current
practitioners. An example
