A NOTE FROM OUR BISHOPBeloved Resurrection and Upper Midwest Diocese,

Holy Week is not only the high point of the church calendar, but also a most beloved tradition of our movement. While we grieve that we are unable to gather in person during Holy Week 2020, we are resolved to celebrate the glorious life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ regardless of our circumstances.

Our leaders have worked tirelessly to find new and innovative ways to draw together our community for a Holy Week unlike any in our collective memory: one that finds its expression in small groups of faithful followers worshiping in their homes, dotting the entire landscape of the Upper Midwest and shouting of the goodness of the Lord from their living room windows.

This Service Guide is divided into two parts: the first is how to prepare for Holy Week at Home, and the second is how to participate in each of the services by following along with the provided liturgies. Resources for families and supplemental activities, such as a Prayer Walk Guide developed by Father Matt Woodley, are available online at churchrez.org/holyweek.

In Holy Week, we are powerfully reminded how Jesus Christ defeated death. Indeed, Christ ’s victory over the grave assures us that we have nothing to fear, “though the earth gives way” (Psalm 46:2). As we journey through Holy Week this year, I am praying that this Holy Week will make a unique contribution to the planting of a revival of Word and Sacrament infused by the Holy Spirit.

With love,

Bishop Stewart E. Ruch III

Home Checklist

Here is everything you will need to follow along in your home throughout the week!

Get these items ready for the services:

❑ Holy Week at Home Service Guide. You can print this guide at home or pick up a copy in the vestibule of the East Doors of the church from 4/3 to 4/11.

❑ For kids, print-out coloring sheets (churchrez.org/holyweek)

❑ Your largest screen ready for the livestream (churchrez.org/holyweek)

❑ Bibles

❑ Palm branches and/or green construction paper

❑ Basin for foot washing

❑ Towels

❑ One large cross (See “Make a Cross” below)

❑ Smaller crosses

❑ Black fabric

❑ Individual candles, candle holders/drip protectors, lanterns, lighters

❑ Bells, streamers, & noisemakers

❑ Flowers

For online instructions on making palm branches and more, visit churchrez.org/holyweek.

Make or Find a Cross

✦ If you have a cross in your home that is meaningful to you, use that. Use a cross that is simple (not too ornamental or decorative), as large as possible, and that helps you connect to the actual cross of Jesus.

✦ If you don’t have one, this is a great time to get one or make one to have in your living room throughout Holy Week. You could make one out of wood, cut one out of paper or cardboard and attach to your wall, or gather branches from your yard to tie together into a cross.

✦ On Maundy Thursday cover it with dark fabric, on Good Friday lay it on the ground, and on Easter Sunday put some flowers on it!

Share with Us on Social Media

✦ Use #rezholyweekathome to show us how you’re celebrating!

✦ Tag us @churchrez on Instagram or Facebook so we can re-post

✦ Visit churchrez.org/community to see a compilation of everyone’s home celebrations

PARTICIPATE IN HOLY WEEKDuring Holy Week we journey with Jesus through the final moments of his life, his death on the cross, and his resurrection from the grave. Each service has incredible moments where we can participate in the story.

We have adapted the traditional Holy Week liturgies for worship at home. Certain liturgical actions—such as foot washing, candle lighting, prayer at the cross, and more—will be prompted from the livestream, but take place within your group.

At the beginning of each service, review “What you need” and “What to do” to ensure that you have assembled what you will need for each service.

We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

people: Now and for ever. Amen.

celebrant: This is the night that Christ the Son of Man gathered with his disciples in the upper room.

This is the night that Christ our Lord and Master took a towel and washed the disciples’ feet, calling us to love one another as he has loved us.

This is the night that Christ our God gave us this holy feast, that we who eat this bread and drink this cup may here proclaim his perfect sacrifice.

This is the night that Christ the Lamb of God gave himself into the hands of those who would slay him.

Almighty Father, whose most dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive it in thankful remembrance of Jesus Christ our Savior, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life; and who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

I Corinthians 11:23–32 (NVI)

Psalm 78:1–4, 14–20, 23–25

1 Hear my teaching, O my people; *

incline your ears to the words of my mouth.2 I will open my mouth in a parable; *

I will utter dark sayings of old,3 Which we have heard and known, *

and such as our forefathers have told us,4 That we should not hide them from the children of

the generations to come, *

but show the honor of the Lord, his mighty and

wonderful works that he has done.14 He divided the sea and let them go through; *

he made the waters to stand in a heap.15 In the daytime he led them with a cloud, *

and all the night through with a light of fire.16 He split the hard rocks in the wilderness *

and gave them drink in abundance, as out of the great deep.17 He brought waters out of the stony rock, *

so that it gushed out like the rivers.18 Yet for all this they sinned more against him, *

and provoked the Most High in the wilderness.19 They tested God in their hearts *

and demanded food for their craving.20 They spoke against God, saying, *

“Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?23 Because they did not believe in God, *

and did not put their trust in his help.24 So he commanded the clouds above *

and opened the doors of heaven. 25 He rained down manna upon them to eat *

and gave them food from heaven.

Bread of Life

Through deserts you lead us, Where hunger consumes us, To test what is in our heart. In deserts you feed us, Your table spreads for us, So we know that you provide.

Chorus: Every word that comes from God, We eat the Bread of Life.Every word that comes from God,Receive the Bread of Life.Digest it, confess it,Bread of Life, Bread of Life.

Your body was broken, The true bread of heaven, You starved so we might have life. True food for true hunger, With no price is offered, Those who eat shall never die.

Not by bread, but in you, We feast and we’re made new, Day by day, now and always.

Your storehouse—unsparing, Abundant, unending— You never turn us away.

Passion Song

Christian, do you love me? Do you love me more than these? Will you sit beside me, And let me wash your feet? O Lord, I’ll sit with you. O Lord, I’ll sit with you.

Christian, do you love me? Do you love me more than these? Will you eat beside me, And on my body feed? O Lord, I’ll eat with you. O Lord, I’ll eat with you.

Christian, do you love me? Do you love me more than these? Will you pray beside me In dark Gethsemane? O Lord, I’ll pray with you. O Lord, I’ll pray with you.

Christian, do you love me? Do you love me more than these? Will you stay beside me Through my trial of mockery? O Lord, I’ll stay with you. O Lord, I’ll stay with you.

Christian, do you love me? Do you love me more than these? Will you walk beside me On the road to Calvary? O Lord, I’ll walk with you. O Lord, I’ll walk with you.

Christian, do you love me? Do you love me more than these? Will you stand beside me As I die upon this tree? O Lord, I’ll stand with you. O Lord, I’ll stand with you.

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, I will stand with you.

Sinner, will you love me? Will you love me more than these? For I’m the one to save you From the bond of slavery. O Lord, I will love you. My Lord, I will love you.

Crucified Between Two Sinners

The Solemn Collects deacon: Dear People of God: Our heavenly Father sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the

world, but that the world through him might be saved; that all who believe in him might be delivered from the power of sin and death, and become heirs with him of everlasting life. We pray, therefore, for people everywhere according to their needs.

leader: Let us pray for the holy catholic Church of Christ throughout the world . . . That God will confirm his Church in faith, increase it in love, and preserve it in peace.

Let us pray for all nations and peoples of the earth, and for those in authority among them . . . That by God’s help they may seek justice and truth, and live in peace and concord.

Let us pray for all who suffer and are afflicted in body or in mind . . . That God in his mercy will comfort and relieve them, and grant them the knowledge of his love, and stir up in us the will and patience to minister to their needs.

Let us pray for all who have not received the Gospel of Christ . . . That God will open their hearts to the truth, and lead them to faith and obedience.

officiant: O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

all: Amen.

Please stand.

The Veneration of the Cross officiant: Behold the wood of the Cross, on which was hung the world’s salvation.

people: Come, let us adore Him.

You stood before creationEternity in your hand. You spoke the earth into motion,My soul now to stand.

You stood before my failureAnd carried the cross for my shame. My sin weighed upon your shoulders,My soul now to stand.

So what can I sayAnd what can I doBut offer this heart, O God,Completely to you.

So I’ll walk upon salvation,Your Spirit alive in me.My life to declare your promise,My soul now to stand.

Chorus:So I’ll stand,With arms high and heart abandonedIn awe of the One who gave it all.I’ll stand,My soul Lord, to you surrendered. All I am is yours.

The Lighting of the Paschal Candle celebrant: Dear friends in Christ: On this most holy night, in which our Lord Jesus passed over from

death to life, the Church invites her members, dispersed throughout the world, to gather in vigil and prayer. For this is the Passover of the Lord, in which, by hearing his Word and celebrating his Sacraments, we share in his victory over death.

Let us pray. O God, through your Son you have bestowed upon your people the brightness of your light: Sanctify this new fire, and grant that in this Paschal feast we may so burn with heavenly desires, that with pure minds we may attain to the festival of everlasting light; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

cantor: It is truly right and good, always and everywhere, with our whole heart and mind and voice, to praise you, the invisible, almighty, and eternal God, and your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who at the feast of the Passover paid for us the debt of Adam’s sin, and by his blood delivered your faithful people. This is the night, when you brought our fathers, the children of Israel, out of bondage in Egypt, and led them through the Red Sea on dry land. This is the night, when all who believe in Christ are delivered from the gloom of sin, and are restored to grace and holiness of life. This is the night, when Christ broke the bonds of death and hell, and rose victorious from the grave. How wonderful and beyond our knowing, O God, is your mercy and loving-kindness to us, that to redeem a slave, you gave a Son. How holy is this night, when wickedness is put to flight, and sin is washed away. It restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to those who mourn. It casts out pride and hatred, and brings peace and concord. How blessed is this night, when earth and heaven are joined and man is reconciled to God. Holy Father, accept our evening sacrifice, the offering of this candle in your honor. May it shine continually to drive away all darkness. May Christ, the Morning Star who knows no setting, find it ever burning—he who gives his light to all creation, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

O Love That Will Not Let Me Go

O love that will not let me go,I rest my weary soul in thee.I give you back this life I owe,That in your ocean depths its flowMay richer, fuller be.

Glorious Day

I was buried beneath my shame.Who could carry that kind of weight? It was my tomb ‘til I met you.

Chorus:You called my name,I ran out of that grave.Out of the darkness into your glorious day.You called my name, and I ran out of that grave.Out of the darkness into your glorious day.

Now your mercy has saved my soul. Now your freedom is all that I know. The old made new, Jesus, when I met you.

I needed rescue, my sin was heavy,But chains break at the weight of your glory.I needed shelter, I was an orphan,Now you call me a citizen of heaven. When I was broken, you were my healing. Now your love is the air that I’m breathing.I have a future, my eyes are open.

Your Mercy

I once was lost; I walked away. The road was dark; I could not see.My hope was gone; the pain was real. But your mercy.

Chorus:Your mercy, your mercy.I stand before my king,And bow my heart to sing. You saved me, you raised me.You died so I could live.No greater love than this:Your mercy.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORDWe conclude the Great Vigil, which traces Salvation History through the Old Testament.

Like Those Who Dream

When the Lord restored the fortunes Of Zion, city of God,We were like those who dream,We were like those who dream.

Then our mouth was filled with laughter, Our tongue with shouts of joy.We were like those who dream, We were like those who dream.

Chorus:The Lord has done great things for us,The Lord has done great things for us,The Lord has done great things for us.Oh praise Him! Oh praise Him!Sing your praises to our God, Sing your praises to our God.

celebrant: Through the Paschal mystery, dear friends, we are buried with Christ by Baptism into his death, and raised with him to newness of life. I call upon you, therefore, now that our Lenten observance is ended, to renew the solemn promises and vows of Holy Baptism, by which we once renounced Satan and all his works, and promised to serve God faithfully in his holy Catholic Church.

The Renewal of Baptismal Vows celebrant: Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ?

people: I do.

celebrant: Do you believe in God the Father?

people: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

celebrant: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

people: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

Come, restore our fortunes, O Lord,Like the streams in the Negev. We’ll be like those who dream,We’ll be like those who dream.

He who goes out with weeping, Yet bears the seed for sowing,He’ll come with shouts of joy. He’ll come with shouts of joy.

Those who sow in tears Will reap with shouts of joy.

14 The Lord is my strength and my song, *

and has become my salvation.15 The voice of joy and deliverance is in the dwellings of the righteous; *

the right hand of the Lord brings mighty things to pass.16 The right hand of the Lord is exalted; *

the right hand of the Lord brings mighty things to pass.17 I shall not die, but live, *

and declare the works of the Lord.18 The Lord has chastened and corrected me, *

but he has not given me over to death.19 Open unto me the gates of righteousness, *

that I may go into them, and give thanks unto the Lord.20 This is the gate of the Lord; *

the righteous shall enter into it.21 I will thank you, for you have heard me, *

and have become my salvation.22 The same stone which the builders refused *

has become the chief cornerstone.23 This is the Lord’s doing, *

and it is marvelous in our eyes.24 This is the day that the Lord has made; *

we will rejoice and be glad in it.

celebrant: . . . Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

all : Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

celebrant: . . . All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

all: Amen.

celebrant: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray,

all: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive our sins, As we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory For ever and ever, For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory For ever and ever, Amen.

Living Hope

How great the chasm that lay between us.How high the mountain I could not climb. In desperation I turned to heaven,And spoke Your name into the night. Then through the darkness, your loving-kindnessTore through the shadows of my soul. The work is finished, the end is written.Jesus Christ, my living hope.

Who could imagine so great a mercy? What heart could fathom such boundless grace? The God of ages stepped down from gloryTo wear my sin and bear my shame. The cross has spoken, I am forgiven. The King of kings calls me His own.Beautiful Savior, I’m yours forever.Jesus Christ, my living hope.

Chorus:Hallelujah, praise the one who set me free.Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me.You have broken every chain. There’s salvation in your name.Jesus Christ, my living hope.

Then came the morning that sealed the promise.Your buried body began to breathe.Out of the silence the roaring lionDeclared the grave has no claim on me.Jesus, yours is the victory.

Jesus Christ, my living hope. Oh God you are my living hope!

Garments of Praise

Put on the garments of praiseFor the spirit of heaviness,Let the oil of gladness flow down From your throne.Put on the garments of praiseFor the spirit of heaviness,Your joy is my strength alone, My strength alone.

Make these broken, weary bones Rise to dance again,Wet this dry and thirsty land with a river;Lord, our eyes are fixed on youAnd we are waitingFor your garland of grace As we praise your name.

Chorus:Hallelujah, sing hallelujah,We give all honor and praise to your name;Hallelujah, sing hallelujah,We trade our sorrows for garments for praise.

Happy Day

The greatest day in history;Death is beaten, You have rescued me.Sing it out—Jesus is alive! The empty cross, the empty grave,Life Eternal, You have won the day,Shout it out—Jesus is alive! He’s alive.

Chorus:Oh, happy day, happy day,You washed my sin away.Oh, happy day, happy day,I’ll never be the same;Forever I am changed.

When I stand in that place,Free at last, meeting face to face,I am Yours, Jesus, You are mine,Endless joy, perfect peace—Earthly pain finally will cease.Celebrate! Jesus is alive! He’s alive.

Oh, what a glorious day,What a glorious wayThat You have saved me.And oh, what a glorious day,What a glorious Name.

The Love of the Father

Lift up your voices and lift up your praise,Join with the heavens declaring the wonders of His faithfulness forever.

Sing of the victory, the hope of the world. The Savior has risen, the Spirit has come to bring us into love forever.

Chorus:We are the people of GodWith the freedom of hope in our hearts. How great is the love of the Father!

Lifted from darkness and into the light,The sons and the daughters are loved at a price. Our God has made us His forever.

This is the song of the redeemed,The ransomed and the free.Given life at such a price,This is love, this is love.

And when the Father calls us home,And we see Him on the throne,Hear the voices sing as one:This is love, this is love!
