A Note from our Director of

Nursing, Stephanie Hicks:

We celebrate and honor Father’s Day

on Sunday, June 17th this year. My father was

always encouraging me to set high goals and be

my best. As a parent, teacher, mentor, we have

the ability to make a difference in others. I’ve been blessed to have strong

male role models in my life. For that, I am grateful. Thank you to all the

gentlemen at Woodlands, both residents and co-workers, for your influ-

ence, leadership, and contributions to society and our community.

We’ve seen some recent stories in the news media regarding Hep-

atitis A. This is spread from person to person by hands that have not been

washed after going to the bathroom or touching items soiled by bowel

movements. It can also be spread by sharing items such as eating utensils,

lip balm, or drinking out of the same container as someone else. The Ca-

bell Huntington Health Department, local pharmacies, or your physician

office may offer the vaccine. Please call ahead for availability. If you have

any questions or think you have been exposed, we urge you to contact

your personal care provider.

In May, we celebrated National Nurs-

es Week. We had a beautiful breakfast bar

for the nurse’s put on by Chef’s Ron and

Bret. We also shared a lovely luncheon for

those who could not attend the breakfast.

Debbie and the dietary team put on such a

pretty presentation. We thank the dietary

department for the most delicious food! In

June, we celebrate our CNA’s (Nursing Assis-

tants). As nurses we depend on our CNA’s

for vital communication. They provide the

direct personal care for the residents. We

value and appreciate our CNA’s every day, but it

is nice to take some time and plan some fun

things for them. We are looking forward to our

fun week of celebrating the CNA’s at Wood-

lands. Please join me in recognizing them and

thanking them for a job well done.

Thank you,

Stephanie

A Message from the CEO-

Our two-year Capital Campaign for the Assisted Living remodel,

including our Memory Care Unit, is in full swing. We started 2018 off on a

good note and I look forward to expanding our services with your support. A

special thank you for the $20,000.00 anonymous gift to help begin the pro-

cess. We are excited to announce, the new furniture for Memory Care has

been ordered and other details are being finalized. If you have any questions, concerns, or want

to make a donation, please do not hesitate to contact myself or our CFO, Eileen Wheeldon.

As always, I thank you for all you do to make Woodlands the premier place to live and work.

Stay tuned for details!

Georgette Connelly

Georgette was born in Indiana, but grew up in the Washington D.C./

Arlington, VA area. She graduated Washington Lee High School and went to

Catholic University in Washington, D.C. It was there, specifically in a chemistry

laboratory, that she met Bernard Connelly. It was surely “love over a Bunsen

burner” as she left school to marry him. Bernie graduated and became a chemical

engineer. Following the family’s move to West Virginia, Georgette graduated

B.S. from West Virginia State and earned a teaching certificate.

It was Bernard’s employment at Union Carbide that brought them to West

Virginia. After working at Union Carbide, In 1970 he invested in a Radio Shack

franchise in Charleston, and in 1983 sold the Radio Shack to work for the West

Virginia Department of Education installing computers in schools. Bernard passed away in 2014

following a twenty four year struggle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Georgette taught chemistry at George Washington High School for two years and, following a two

year break, became a full time homebound teacher for grades seven through twelve in math and science

for the next twenty three years. She managed this employment while she and Bernard parented six

children!

Bernard Jr. lives in Huntington and is retired. Ken and wife Patti live in Boone, NC, and have five

children. They are semi-retired. Thomas and wife Bridget live in Hurricane, WV, have four children and

are retired. David and wife Cynthia live in Lexington, SC. He works for Blue Cross. They have three

children. Their only daughter, Mary Ellen, is a sales manager of a software company in Ashburn, VA. She

has two children. Robert and wife Kathleen live in Raleigh, NC and are retired. They have two children.

In addition, Georgette is blessed with nine great grandchildren.

Georgette has brought with her to her new Woodlands home, a little canine friend. Zoey, a pretty

Shih Tzu, has given the best years of her life to be a companion to Bernie and Georgette. Aging has left

her deaf and blind in one eye, thus she might easily be startled. Grant this dog the deference she deserves

in her “golden years”.

Georgette enjoys playing Duplicate Bridge with a group in Huntington. She reads for pleasure but

finds another pleasure, gardening, too difficult these days. She is happy to be in an environment that

affords her an easier, less complicated life along with interesting activities and pleasant

socialization. Woodlands welcomes Georgette and Zoey. We are pleased that they have chosen to join our

community.

MARSHALL MONDAY– June 4, 2018

6pm, Hampton Room

Brooke Estep, a Barboursville, West Virginia, native and member of the Society of

Yeager Scholars James and Verna Gibson Class of 2018 will present on her travels

abroad during her four years at Marshall.

Part of the Yeager Society curriculum is to study at Oxford in England for the summer.

Do not miss the opportunity to hear a recent graduate present!

Woodlands seems to have many football fans, but, as

far as I can tell, not too many folks interested in chess (yet?).

Nevertheless, both games share a common origin: medieval

warfare. Both games are played on a bounded, measured area:

chess– 64 square board; football– 100 yard field. Both have

warfare related goals: football– take and hold territory; chess–

kill or capture the king. Finally, in terms of configuration, both games feature a line of players facing off

(chess= pawns; football= linemen), with more powerful players behind, and protected by, the linemen/

pawns.

In terms of our Woodlands situation, there is one big difference be-

tween football and chess. Given the demographics here, there is very little

chance we will ever have a Woodlands football team (though of course we can

cheer when others play). But, our demographics here do not prevent us from

playing chess!

The coin has been tossed (it has been decided who plays white & who black). The ball is in the air

(the white player’s hand hovers over the king’s pawn). The ball is caught by a receiver (P-K4). The game

has begun!

Hello everyone:

The next Technology committee will meet on the 14th from 1PM until 2PM in the IT Office.

This committee is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about technology or is willing to help other

residents with their technology. I hope to see you there!

If you’ve recently moved in, & do not have a pass for your vehicle, please see reception to fill out a parking pass

form.

I will be holding another 3D Printing demonstration/workshop in July in the HealthCare Activity room. This

demonstration is open to all residents (Independent & Assisted Living). I hope to see you there as I have many

more cool projects to show you. We’ll announce the date & time in the next newsletter. In the mean time I’m

looking for ideas for something you think would be neat to have printed before the demonstration.

Thanks,

The Barbie Doll Ministry Is A Year-Round Project

We need your Help! Last year we sent 90 Barbie Doll boxes to girls ages 5-10

at Branches, The City Mission, The Salvation Army, and a mission in Dunlow,

WV. Each box contained a new Barbie doll, 4 dresses (some were handmade),

a game, a toy, an educational game or a book, and a gift for the girl’s mother.

We also asked the Physical Therapy students at Mountwest Community & Technical College

to help. The students brought in 15 shopping bags full of all kinds of gifts, and this made it

possible for us to help 90 little girls. The PT students (with the guidance of their professor,

Kelly Terry) have offered to help us again this year. An anonymous Woodlands resident

contributed the funds for each girl to have a pink Rabbit Pocketbook with a shoulder strap.

We will attach the pocketbook to the top of the plastic box with a large rubber band for

Christmas 2018.

This Christmas we hope to reach at least 90 girls again. If you wish to participate, your

assistance in the following ways would be helpful:

Buy a new Barbie doll or donate the funds.

Make dresses for Barbie. Frances Midkiff and I will help you.

Donate gently used jewelry for a gift to the girl’s mother. Put donations of jewelry in

the mailbox for Apt.200.

Donate a small game or toy, a small book, or an educational game.

Donate funds for plastic boxes.

Appreciation is Hereby Expressed to those who made the Barbie Doll Ministry possible for
