A POLYVAGAL THEORY GUIDED APPROACH TO THERAPY: ENGAGING THE RHYTHM
OF REGULATION
The autonomic nervous system is at the heart of daily living powerfully shaping our clients’ experiences of safety and influencing their capacity for connection. Polyvagal Theory, through the organizing principles of hierarchy, neuroception, and co-regulation, has revolutionized our under-standing of how this system works. We now know that trauma interrupts the development of autonomic regulation and shapes the system away from connection into patterns of protection. With an updated map of the autonomic circuits that underlie behaviors and beliefs, we can reliably lead our clients out of adaptive survival responses into the autonomically regulated state of safety that is necessary for successful treatment.
A Polyvagal Theory guided approach to therapy begins with helping clients map their autonomic profiles and track their moment to moment movement along the autonomic hierarchy. With this foundation, the essential clinical questions address how to help clients interrupt habitual response patterns and find safety in a state of engagement. Clients’ au-tonomic nervous systems are highly tuned surveillance systems sensitive to the slightest cues of danger and challenged to take in cues of safety. Polyvagal Theory gives therapists a guide to becoming a regulated and
co-regulating resource for clients and concrete ways to help them find, and savor, experiences of safety. Working from a foundation of Polyva-gal Theory, therapists have practical ways to effectively help clients iden-tify and interrupt their familiar response patterns and strategies to shape their autonomic nervous systems toward safety and connection.
In this two-day, experiential workshop, Deb Dana shares her Polyvagal Theory guided approach to therapy. Participants will learn the orga-nizing principles of Polyvagal Theory and work with practices desig-ned to bring the power of Polyvagal Theory directly into clinical work. Working individually and in dyads, participants will learn how to map autonomic response patterns, skills to safely explore patterns of action, disconnection, and engagement, and techniques to build autonomic re-gulation and resilience. This workshop teaches participants the langua-ge of Polyvagal Theory and brings theory into practical application with a roadmap to help clients safely tune into their autonomic states, reshape their nervous systems, and rewrite the trauma stories that are carried in their autonomic pathways.
Participants will learn:• The fundamentals of Polyvagal Theory• How to create autonomic maps and use them as a guide in treatment • The importance of the “Notice and Name” skill to track autonomic pat-
terns• Ways to engage the co-regulating pathways of the Social Engagement
System in therapy sessions • About autonomic portals of intervention including breath, movement,
touch, and sound• How the guiding questions of Polyvagal-informed therapy influence cli-
nical practice
Topics covered during the two-day workshop:
• Mapping the System• Patterns of Connection and Protection• The Social Engagement System • Shaping the System• Regulating Resources• Portals of Intervention
