From the SuperintendentRaving Fans

Welcome to the first edition of the end of year celebration for the Honeoye-Falls Lima Central School District. Each quarter of the school year we recognize the students, parents, teachers, and community members who make up this place we call home. This summer edition of the Inside HF-L Newsletter is to celebrate both the raving fans of our schools, and also to thank the many raving fans who created unique opportunities for students to change the world.

One of the key ways we look at every day here in school, is to use the lens of our students. The Central Office team meets with small groups of students throughout the year. We ask them about school, technology use, and the social atmosphere found within our schools. The students always remind us that you may not be able to change where you are from, however, you can decide where you want to go. The work of learning is a challenge in all of our schools. We never take for granted the level of rigor and excellence required by our students. We recognize the amazing impact each of our staff can have on a students’ trajectory.

Every detail of the student experience in HF-L either enhances or detracts from the Cougar experience, everything speaks. When you see a HF-L student performance of any kind, the attitudinal elements of attention to detail, excellence, and honor are easy to spot. Black and Gold is proudly worn in halls, on busses, and across the globe as our students become global leaders.

This newsletter is filled with students who have that WOW factor! They simply exceed their own, their parents’, and even their teachers’ expectations. These students are stars up close and in the classroom. They pay attention to their classmates, they analyze opportunities for learning, and they even understand the needs and wants of their parents. We have amazing students here in HF-L.

Finally, this newsletter is truly a thank you to the community. This school-community commits every element to the students of this district, from construction to instruction. HF-L is truly a wonderful place to raise a family and grow up. The culture of HF-L is a common pattern that includes strong families, sets of instructional practices that include creating a strong work ethic, and finally customs and traditions that determine how everyone will act, communicate, and order their lives. This road map runs right through all of our schools, the Cougar Road Map to creating raving fans!

Have a great summer.

Class of 2018 Valedictorian & Salutatorian

Natalie Northrup

HF-L’s Salutatorian for the Class of 2018

No written letter of reference can paint the true picture of who Natalie Northrup is and what she means to Honeoye Falls-Lima, but also to the future of the planet. Constantly pushing herself beyond the limitations often discovered by high school students, Natalie is an intelligent, forward thinking, and highly driven game changer.

An environmental mastermind, Natalie has thrived on her desire to compost her way to a better world. Starting an independent research project in her backyard, she developed the most effective way, as well as the quickest way, to break down compostable matter into high quality compost. In addition to compost, when it came to spoiled milk, Natalie utilized one of our small science labs during finals week to test some extraction techniques for removing fats for the purpose of making biodiesel!

Natalie has taken this passion and intellect in multiple directions. She has created an after school program at Lima Primary and the Manor School to teach children about the importance of taking care of our planet through healthy life practices and choices. She took it a step farther by training a team of peers from the high school to help implement this program, strategically increasing the number of disciples passing on her message. She has also taught a STEAM course over the summer months to Manor and Middle school students, further engraining our youth with these healthy choices.

Natalie has attended the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment, was accepted into the College of the Atlantics Presidential Scholar Fly-In Program where she engaged in in-depth discussions surrounding the future of the planet. She set up her own meetings with engineers and geologists from Stantec Engineering to look at what is currently available, and being developed, in the world of environmental protection and sustainability. She personally reached out to Cornell University in an attempt to work as a Research Assistant on a study which examined bees – and was successful. Soon she was driving around in a full bee suit, escorting queen bees to new sites around the Ithaca, NY Region. All of these experiences Natalie blends together to concoct a holistic and accurate image of the world. An image that will allow her to make connections on a grand scale.

This fall Natalie will be taking her talents and charisma to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Garrett Ruff

HF-L’s Valedictorian for the Class of 2018

Garrett Ruff is an exceptional student who embraces life with great passion and commitment. One of

the things that makes Garrett exceptional is his

selflessness in helping others. In the classroom, Garrett often

masters concepts instantly so he chooses to assist others sitting near him.

He is a natural teacher and Garrett helps others sincerely and kindly while he remains humble, congratulating others on their accomplishments. An excellent critical thinker, Garrett’s logical reasoning skills are outstanding, and he has taken special interest in his mathematics and science courses where he tutors other students.

Garrett has received recognition for his academic excellence with the American Chemical Society Chemistry Achievement Award. He is the recipient of the University of Rochester Bausch & Lomb Science Award, and he was nominated, and accepted, to sit for the National Chemistry Olympiad Exam. A well-rounded academic, Garrett is a member of the French and National Honor Societies.

Garrett also volunteered at the Manor School. Garrett has embraced the experience and shared that the day he volunteers is his favorite day of the week! Garrett arranged his schedule this year to make sure that he was able to continue volunteering at Manor, helping struggling students.

A passionate athlete, Garrett has played varsity basketball and lacrosse for HF-L. Elected as captain of the basketball and lacrosse teams, he has won numerous athletic awards for his lacrosse play. Garrett plays competitive travel lacrosse for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes where he has excelled. He has balanced his athletics and academics with a variety of service activities including tutoring, mentoring as a Link Crew leader, being a volunteer coach for youth basketball and lacrosse teams and volunteering for Pancakes for Poverty and Euchre tournament fundraisers. Garrett puts his heart into everything he does.

Garrett will be attending Cornell University to study Human Biology while he competes on the Cornell lacrosse team. Garrett’s passion and intelligence will allow him to make a significant impact at Cornell and in the world. He is a driven self-starter, a caring member of our society, and a passionate lifelong learner.

Student RecognitionAttorney General’s Triple “C” Award

Mick Finn and Mia Wood received the Triple “C” Award in May. The award, sponsored by Attorney General Barbara Underwood, recognizes their commitment to bettering themselves, their school and their community. This award is to encourage children to achieve their goals and to continue to make the right decisions in the future. Their courage is sure to guide them through any future challenges.

Mick Finn was chosen as a Triple “C” awardee because of his leadership and passion for volunteering. During his first grade social studies unit, he took to heart character traits of an active citizen. After his first volunteer situation he “got it.” He knew what volunteering meant and how good he felt helping others. After his first volunteer work, he went to lead his classroom in other volunteer opportunities. He personally initiated a safety patrol here at Lima Primary. His charisma and passion for volunteering led three others to assist him with daily safety patrol.

Mia Wood was nominated as a Triple “C” awardee for her leadership among her peers. She is a natural! Her quiet encouragement and optimism elevates everyone around her. While in the classroom, she is always aware of things around her. Someone struggling? Mia is there to help! Her reassuring words encourage and support, too. Helping, peer coaching, and supporting is never a chore. For her, it is the right thing to do. She is a volunteer and is passionate about it. This past holiday season she encouraged her family to be bell ringers. Once the family was on board, she convinced some friends to join them. Passion is what drives her to help others.

Marble Machines

Eighth grade students at HF-L Middle School are learning about how various simple machines work together to accomplish tasks.

Superintendent Mancuso stopped by for a visit to Mr. Waughtel’s set 6 Technology class and was treated to a demonstration of their Rube Goldberg marble machine.

Students have been working in pairs to design and build their own marble machine, but each partnership was expected to coordinate with the rest of the class to design a larger machine. This activity emphasizes the importance of collaboration to complete a project, an important skill that will help prepare students to be college and career ready.

Prevention 1st’s 10th Annual Fire Safety Poster Contest

This February, Manor students in grades 2-5 participated in the Prevention 1st’s 10th Annual Fire Safety Poster Contest. There were over 250 entries this year and the District is thrilled that Manor Intermediate students placed first in several categories. Posters were reviewed by a panel of judges including State Senator Joe Robach, Rochester City Schools Commissioner Beatriz Lebron, Rochester Fire Marshal Christine Schryver, Monroe County Fire Coordinator Steve Schalabba, and the Memorial Art Gallery’s Sydney Greaves.

Congratulations to the winning students! Fourth graders Finley Neenan, Emilia Bennett, Jenna Lawrence, and Sarah Smith collaborated on the 1st place poster in the 3rd-4th grade category and second grader Abby Flagg had the winning poster in the K-2nd grade category. Second grader Meaghan O’Brien also received an honorable mention.

Thanks to supporters of Prevention 1st, the prize for the winning poster in each age category is a $50 gift card with an additional $200 to the school for classroom supplies.

Finally, all participants were entered in a drawing to win a ride to school on a fire truck. And the winner was, Alli Falzoi, a student of Mr. Wilson’s. On Tuesday, April 24, 2018, Alli was welcomed by Manor students as Chief Hanson rounded the corner with her sitting up front on a full sized fire truck. What a way to celebrate HF-L engagement, pride, and safety!

Success of Unified Basketball Leads to Modified Division

The HF-L Unified Basketball Team ended its third consecutive season in May. This year marked the first year that a modified division (grades 7&8) was introduced. The modified division was made possible through a NYS Special Olympics grant. The unified season began in March and culminated in May with a celebratory game that included all 19 participating school districts to recognize each of the athletes. HF-L currently has 28 unified basketball players on the high school level, and 13 players new this year to the modified level. The high school level plays two games a week, one home and one away. The modified division has more of an abbreviated schedule with HF-L being one of only five other participating schools with a modified division. A Unified Basketball Recognition Night was held in May where players took the time to recognize family members, friends, or coaches for their importance in being a positive and influential role model.
