A MAKEOVER FOR OUR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH UNIT Some time ago, the Behavioral Health Unit of PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center was asked to remove all artwork adorning its walls due to new federal recommendations regarding ligature risk. Last summer, however, was a time to take what was dreary and turn it cheery. With support from PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation’s Healing Through Art Fund, beautiful murals took form in this healing space. Artist Jean Bradbury brought her artistic vision and paints to the unit and involved both patients and caregivers in the creative process. As Jean worked on the murals, she frequently took the opportunity to interact with caregivers to obtain their input about the work she was doing. The best day of the project was when Behavioral Health patients interested in participating in the mural had an opportunity to paint. As Jean worked with patients, she patiently taught them about brush techniques and the painting process. This made our patients feel involved in the creation of the murals, designed to be a therapeutic component of their recovery. Photos were taken of each person as they painted and prints were made available to the patients. We are extremely grateful for the color and calming art that now graces the walls of the Behavioral Health Unit. We sincerely thank you, our foundation donors, for making this transformation possible. Roseanna Bell Chief Nursing Officer A PUBLICATION OF PEACEHEALTH ST. MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT GIFTS NEW BOOKS TO BABIES BORN AT ST. JOE’S

Julie MacPhee, RN, was a dedicated, passionate, inspirational and loving labor and delivery nurse at the PeaceHealth St. Joseph Childbirth Center for 13 years. Her passing in 2018 left a huge void for many. Julie’s family has found a beautiful way to keep her legacy alive and well in our community.

Julie loved babies and books. A generous endowment gift provided by the MacPhee Family will provide a new infant book to each baby born at St. Joseph for many generations to come. The books will be used by caregivers to guide parents in promoting their child’s development – helping to foster early literacy skills and a lifelong love of reading. “We’ll tell each family member a memory of Julie and pass on Julie’s message that reading is important for babies and young children,” explains Gallit Eni, MSN, nurse manager of the Childbirth Center.

“Our family has received so much joy honoring Julie’s life with this endowment,” says Julie’s brother, Dan MacPhee. “It meant everything to us knowing her legacy and love of books and babies will live on.”

Making your personal goals, values, religious and cultural beliefs clearly known in advance of a medical crisis is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, your family and friends. Doing so is a gift of love and peace of mind.

Offered three times monthly in Bellingham and Sedro-Woolley, Your Voice, Your Choice is a free workshop that guides participants through the process of completing advance directives – legal documents naming a surrogate medical decision maker and describing the kind of care you wish to receive in the event you cannot speak for yourself. The workshops and other advance care planning outreach efforts are made possible by generous PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation donors like you.

In the first two years of our five-year community-wide advance care planning initiative, the Foundation’s $1 million grant has enabled us to help nearly 1,000 local families become better prepared for the unexpected. In addition to funding the free workshops, the grant is allowing us to facilitate private advance care planning consultations in clinical settings and helping us to train providers and other caregivers to do the same.

To register for a workshop, please visit our website: www.peacehealth.org/yourvoiceyourchoice.

Visiting the PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center for the first time was terrifying for Colleen, a young woman just diagnosed with breast cancer. While waiting to meet the oncologist and learn about her treatment plan, Colleen grabbed a cup of coffee and browsed the books and materials on display in the cancer resource lending library near the lobby.

“Feel free to borrow anything you like,” a caregiver offered. Upon learning the reason for Colleen’s visit, the compassionate staff member continued, “You will get amazing care here and we will be with you through this journey. Additionally, we have a full calendar of support groups and classes available to you including nutrition, yoga, and art classes. All you need to do is show up. Community donations cover all the costs and materials.”

As a PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation donor, you expand our ability to deliver exceptional cancer care. In the first four months of Fiscal Year 2020, the Foundation allocated more than $70,000 from our Cancer Center Patient Experience Fund to provide educational resources, complementary therapies like massage and acupuncture, and a robust, diverse array of classes and support programs designed to help patients connect and heal.

Patient Shirley S. was grateful for the opportunity to attend a Tai Chi class. “My experience at the Cancer Center has been wonderful and rewarding,” she said. “The free programs offered at the Cancer Center have helped me stay positive throughout my journey.”

Additionally, the Cancer Center Patient Experience Fund provides patients access to a wig, scarf and hat boutique, free rides to treatment, and grocery vouchers for those facing financial hardship. Your partnership enables us to provide healing that goes beyond medicine. Thank you!
