Director’s Report Fall/Winter 2010 Dear Friends of Tri-County GLAD: Summer came and went so quickly that we did not realize it was fall already. The seasons went by in a blur, it seems. A couple of great highlights since last summer: We had a great result from our Strawberry Festival/2010 Food Booth. We sold Strawberry popcorn which was popular for we had long lines of people and children coming for it and various lemonades (Strawberry Lemonade, Mint Lemonade and Lemonade). Due to the success, we will be doing it again at the next Strawberry Festival in May 2011. We received an award to continue the AOD (Alcohol and Drug Prevention) program for the fiscal year of 2010-2011.Ginny Nyholm has resumed her position as AOD Coordinator. Ginny will share more information in her article in this newsletter. Welcome back, Ginny! We had our Tri-County GLAD/WRAD’s 3 rd Annual Beach Day at Marina Park right by the sea in Ventura. People came from Los Angeles, Simi Valley, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Lancaster. What a great social event for everyone especially before Labor’s Day! A new Advisory Board member named Edith Wysinger has joined us. We are so pleased to have her on board. She is the mother of a deaf son. Welcome, Edith! Tri-County GLAD had several exhibition/informative/demonstrative booths at various places and the last one was at Boys and Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme’s Day for Kids. There was over 2,000 children and families who came to our booth. It was a success. Tri-County GLAD had a wonderful opportunity to participate in the annual Young Readers’ Story Fest at Ventura Unified School District in Ventura. We provided 6 great ASL interpreters who volunteered to interpret all the storytelling through books in various tents and from the stage. 1,051 people (families and children) came and saw all the stories interpreted in ASL. On December 18 th , Tri-County GLAD will host the 21 st Annual Holi- day Celebration event at Elks Lodge in Oxnard from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will send out flyers with the announcement and also forms for parents to sign and register for gifts for children. Director’s Report Fall/Winter 2010

Dear Friends of Tri-County GLAD: Summer came and went so quickly that we did not realize it was fall already. The seasons went by in a blur, it seems. A couple of great highlights since last summer:

We had a great result from our Strawberry Festival/2010 Food Booth.

We had our Tri-County GLAD/WRAD’s 3rd Annual Beach Day at Marina Park right by the sea in Ventura.

On December 18th, Tri-County GLAD will host the 21st Annual Holi-day Celebration event at Elks Lodge in Oxnard from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will send out flyers with the announcement and also forms for parents to sign and register for gifts for children.

Enjoy the great autumn and winter with deep appreciation, Julianna Fjeld

Hello Community, Only 2 more months left until 2011! Throughout my years working as an Advocate, I continue to hear from consumers that businesses won’t hire people who are deaf or hard of hearing (HOH) because of their hearing loss and they say they are being discriminated against. If you are a qualified applicant/employee and feel that you are being discriminated against because of your hearing loss, please contact me immediately. As an advocate I will work with the individual and the business on resolving any discriminating issues that they may have. If the individual is a client of and has an open case with the Department of Rehabilitation Services (DOR), I would refer you back to your Rehabilitation Counselor for the Deaf-RCD (VR counselor). The RCD would be the primary person to assist with resolving any issues at work. Don’t limit yourself on what you can accomplish because as long as you have a goal and stay motivated, you can accomplish anything. Don’t assume that an employer won’t hire you because of your hearing loss. Don’t hesitate to give it a shot. Have a wonderful Happy Holidays and Happy New Year 2011!!!

Answer to Spring/Summer Trivia Question

During a job interview the employer is not allowed to ask you about the existence, nature or severity of your hearing loss. Employers are allowed to ask if your disability will interfere with you being able to do the essential

functions of the job.

Fall/Winter Trivia Question

Which city in California was the first to have a VP established in the courthouse?

Well, I am finally back with the AOD Project after a short hiatus! Tri-County GLAD has four exciting

projects in the works for the 2010-2011 academic year, particularly with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students from Cabrillo Middle School!

First, we are launching the video documentary project which the DHH students will be ultimately

exposed to the hands-on experience of being inclusive in the video documentary process in the home, school and community. They will experience the positive working dynamics in these settings before they encounter alcohol and drug issues later in life. The documentary will show the various situations the DHH students encounter in their day with regard to communication barriers.

Next, we will implement monthly communication workshops for parents & families of Cabrillo DHH stu-

dents and the first workshop will begin in mid-November. The workshops will ultimately empower the parents/families and DHH students in fostering and retaining healthy and strong relationships with each other.

In Spring 2011, we will showcase the Drama Project which the DHH students will empower and

enlighten their fellow schoolmates from the neighboring DHH programs in Ventura County with a literary drama project of modeling other refusal strategies towards AOD use. In return, the DHH students will be empowered and enlightened in their leadership and acting endeavors.

Last, but not least, we will entertain a painting project which this project will be an incredibly creative

inner expression of how Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth positively cope with day to day stress. Once the biggest canvas is collectively painted by the true painters (the DHH students) and dried to the surface, the canvas will be given to the Ventura County Behavioral Health’s Alcohol and Drug Program – Prevention Division.

These projects are funded in entirety by Ventura County Behavioral Health’s Alcohol and Drug Program

– Prevention Division. An infinite round of waving hands to VCBH for their belief and support to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community!

I always love to close with a quote -- my heart flutters when I see the Chinese proverb: “A child's life is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark.”

Code of Professional Conduct: PROFESSIONALISM Tenet: 2. 0

Interpreters possess the professional skills and knowledge required for the specific interpreting situation.

Guiding Principle: Interpreters are expected to stay abreast of evolving language use and trends in the profession of interpreting as well as in the American Deaf community. Interpreters accept assignments using discretion with regard to skill, communication mode, setting, and consumer needs. Interpreters possess knowledge of American Deaf culture and deafness-related resources. Illustrative Behavior - Interpreters: 2.1 Provide service delivery regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, or any other factor. (Meaning the interpreter cannot discriminate) 2.2 Assess consumer needs and the interpreting situation before and during the assignment and make adjustments as needed. (The interpreter has to match the consumer’s signing style) 2.3 Render the message faithfully by conveying the content and spirit of what is being communicated, using language most readily understood by consumers, and correcting errors discreetly and expeditiously. 2.4 Request support (e.g., certified deaf interpreters, team members, language facilitators) when needed to fully convey the message or to address exceptional communication challenges (e.g. instruction or language), cognitive disabilities, foreign sign language, emerging language ability, or lack of formal instruction or language). 2.5 Refrain from providing counsel, advice, or personal opinions. (The interpreter cannot give any advice on anything.) 2.6 Judiciously provide information or referral regarding available interpreting or community resources without infringing upon consumers’ rights. (If the interpreter knows of any resources to provide the consumers, the interpreter can without interfering.) • Interpreters must abide by the Code of Professional Conduct. • If an interpreter violates this rule, it will be announced in the RID VIEWS newsletter. For more information you can visit the RID website, www.rid.org. For interpreting services contact LIFESIGNS at 888-930-7776 Voice.

The information in this article was obtained from RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf). *NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct. The explanations are written by Mark Robinson.
