There is a valid explanation as to why so many non-profits are hesitant to initiate planned giving programs as the process seems very complicated. Legal documents, attorneys, accountants, financial planners...any combination of which are typically associated with planned gifts, might lead one to think that the effort will be time consuming and expensive. In some circumstances this may prove to be true, however, initiating your first planned giving program can be simple and efficient. Basically, “planned giving” can be defined as the act of making a commitment to give a charitable organization a major gift, over time or at death, as part of the donor’s financial and estate planning. There are many vehicles that a donor can utilize to give such a gift. They can range from a simple cash bequest made in a will, to charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts that establish major gifts to the non-profit while simultaneously providing lifetime income to the donor. While ultimately a non-profit will want to explore all gift options available to it, to begin a planned giving program the organization can simply ask supporters to consider leaving a portion of their estate to the charity via their will or a trust. Once the campaign gains momentum, the charity can then incorporate more complex forms of planned giving available. Planned gifts can be a game changer for your organization. Every non-profit should focus, in part, on identifying benefactors to leave planned gifts because there is no better way to plan for the future growth and strength of your organization. Workplace Wellness Means Business On Tuesday, May 22, the Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce hosted its spring breakfast forum at the Cochecho Country Club in Dover. ‘Workplace Wellness – Why It’s Important to Your Business’ focused on best business practices to assist with employee retention, recruiting and productivity as it relates to employee health. The Dover Chamber was proud to partner with Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, who not only served as the underwriter but also assisted in planning and delivery of the event. “Workplace programs and policies that encourage employees to adopt healthier lifestyles help businesses set themselves apart as highly desirable places to work,” according to Katie MacKinnon, President of the Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce. “Not only do these initiatives help attract and retain talent, but they also produce more productive employees, build staff morale, combat employee absenteeism, reduce healthcare costs for employers, and ultimately improve the bottom line for businesses.” The ‘Workplace Wellness’breakfast featured Carol Phillips, owner of Health Design and Award-Winning Author of 52 Simple Ways to Health. Following Carol’s keynote, a panel discussion ensued which included Dr. William Brewster, Vice President of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care-New Hampshire Market; Dawn Barker, Vice President of Human Resources & Risk Management for The RiverWoods Group; and Jonathan Sheff, Senior Partner for MKS Performance Solutions LLC. The panel was expertly moderated by Scott Spradling, Founder and Principal of The Spradling Group.
