As we move into the final stages of the year we are preparing for our Presentation Day which is on Thursday, 5th December, at the Saraton Theatre. There are several scholarships on offer for Year 6 2020 students, including the Marie White Scholarship and the Riverside Church Scholarship. Scholarships offer current Year 5 students $150 towards their Year 6 education expenses such as stationery, textbooks, school uniform and clothing, tuition and/or excursions. Scholarship Criteria: All current Year 5 students may apply for these scholarships. These are all-rounder scholarships available to students who have a proven record of consistent academic achievement and positive school participation. Evidence of participation in the wider school community should be provided along with evidence of academic achievement. Specific achievement in co-curricula areas will also be recognised. The application is to be no more than a total of two pages which addresses: Personal Attributes; School and Community Citizenship; Academic Achievement; Other Information; and a personal handwritten answer to: Why I deserve a scholarship. Scholarship Process: The scholarships are assessed following the review of the application and supportive material and an interview. Students are expected to maintain their interest, work effectively and behave appropriately in order to maintain the scholarship. Dear Parents and Carers, There are some moments in time when it’s hard to believe what you are seeing. The current fires across the state have been devastating and, in particular, the fires in our local area have been catastrophic and a sight none of us ever wanted to see or experience. Unfortunately, the number of families affected directly or indirectly by the fires has been increasing at a rapid rate. Many of our local small schools have been closed due to the fires and in order to try and keep some normality for these students, they have been attending other local schools. Grafton Public School has welcomed Nymboida and Baryulgil PS students into our school and they are running their class programs within our grounds. It is lovely to see the community spirit in the Clarence Valley shine at this very difficult time. I am so proud to hear a large number of stories about our students assisting others in need at this difficult time and our P&C support has also been amazing with a contribution of $1000. Today, students from Grafton High School SRC approached our school to join them in a gold coin donation mufti day this Friday to raise money for those affected by the fires. Students can wear bright colours on the day and hopefully a small contribution from everyone can make a big impact for those in need. Thank you also to those families who have donated items for the various fire appeals. Items delivered to the school have been passed on to those in need. Our local fire services have done an amazing job to save as many buildings as possible, but the sheer size, number and intensity has made this task over the past three months incredibly difficult and we are only at the beginning of our usual bushfire season. These wonderful men and women are amazing and true heroes. If your family has been impacted by the fires, please let us know so we can ensure you and your children are supported. Please stay safe. A good news story in amongst it all……..Congratulations to Tayla Willis from 6LS who attended a presentation evening yesterday to collect a writing award. Tayla won the school’s division of the national The Long Way Home writing competition. She got to read her story, with the theme “To the Island”, to all present last night. Her fellow classmate Leni Rush was also there last night as her story was chosen as a finalist. Both girls have had their stories published in the To The Island book which they proudly autographed and gifted to their teacher Mr Stanford this morning. Well done Tayla and Leni. Kind regards, Miss Michelle McDonagh Principal
