History
• Idea of a 4-year medical school for the Phoenix area dates back at least 25 years..
• Now-famous 2004 Colorado river trip when the ASU and UA presidents reached an agreement with urging from Board of Regents– Expand UA COM from Tucson to a second
campus in Phoenix
– ASU as partner
– Initial ASU contribution would include a new
Department of Biomedical Informatics

Starting with the end in mind…
The options:
1. Continue to operate as we are now, a UA library whose med students have remote access to ASU library resources, or
2. Piecemeal together small solutions to ease the difficulties of access without spending significant monies, or
3. Aim to create a seamless Phoenix Biomedical Campus library system that serves all faculty, students and staff of the PBC regardless of home institution.
![Page 26: A vision for the Phx Biomedical Campus Library in 2013](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052504/547a054fb4af9f6f568b466c/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Challenges for users
• Locating materials• Checking out print
materials, media and equipment
• Accessing resources remotely

Challenges for Library Staff
• Administering the library has many complex reporting patterns
• Supervising Staff and Faculty
• Sharing Resources

Accomplishments
34
• Initial issues identified are being dealt with slowly
• All students can use physical PBC resources
• ASU Students on this campus may apply for remote access
• We’re already collaborating and saving $
• Collections• Teaching• Planning
![Page 34: A vision for the Phx Biomedical Campus Library in 2013](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052504/547a054fb4af9f6f568b466c/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Recommendations
• Be sure everyone is involved that should be involved (on the boat)
• Use technology and meetings to stay connected
• Rely on facilities director and architects
• Read a lot• Collaborate & connect,
regionally and nationally
35
![Page 35: A vision for the Phx Biomedical Campus Library in 2013](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052504/547a054fb4af9f6f568b466c/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Lessons Learned
• An almost entirely digital library IS different!
• Did not entirely gain upper library management enthusiastic engagement (at the University Librarian Level)
• Have not finalized fiscal arrangements/sharing
• Staffing and officing still a bit vague
• ABOR not yet directly engaged 36
![Page 36: A vision for the Phx Biomedical Campus Library in 2013](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052504/547a054fb4af9f6f568b466c/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
