I love the absolute abandonment, absolute commitment, absolute absorption in the moment of riding a wave to the sand. Very often a wave that has enabled that experience initially came at me as a terrifying challenge, looming above the water and careening straight at me, inescapable and seriously dangerous. So often, it has flashed through my mind that I either catch this wave and hang on, or I wind up on the 6 o’clock news as the old lady smashed to bits in the surf! There is a skill, learned and practised, to picking the right wave, at the right time, hanging on to the board to avoid being dumped, and in using your whole body to steer the board as you hurtle forward, choosing the right path to hold the wave for maximum momentum. The resulting ride is breathtaking, and all I usually ever want to do is to wade straight back out there and do it all again. However… there is the ‘push up’ required to get back on my feet (gravity!! ergh!!!), feeling my way through the invisible pot holes with my feet, fighting against the waves to reach the right place to catch another one, and the terrifying moment of hoping that this next impossibly enormous mon- ster wave isn’t the one that I mess up, when whiplash becomes my new companion! But it is sooo worth it! There are other learned and practised exhilarating challenges I face each and every day that do compare, both in satisfaction and in terror rating. Marriage and parenthood have to be up there on the ‘white-knuckle-o-meter’, being a Pastoral Worker and doing a good job is right there too. And allowing God to throw open new challenges to me, sensitively listening to his prompts, and accepting his invitations with faith, can be every bit as scary a ride as catching those big waves. Waves just happen, nature takes care of that. Life happens, ‘things’ happen… good things, happy things, insane things, impossible things, desperately uncomfortable and emotionally devastating things. God accompanies us through it all, even if we don’t recognise it, and I have learned to let go and to let him do his stuff, or rather, my stuff! Through each moment of living life to the full, God accompanies us, using the world around us, the people and situations we encounter, and each wave of life that barrels at us, to reveal himself to us. If we shut our eyes to his presence, we may risk missing the opportunity to embrace the exhilaration of being his companion. When we hang on tight and trust in him, no matter what is coming at us, we grow in knowledge of his friendship, not just learned through books, or other people’s experiences, but through our own powerful ‘being’. This sense of self in God’s love feeds and nourishes us, and radiates outwards from us, affecting others, and centring our own sense of belong- ing in life itself. Life in God’s love can be scary, but, a bit like my waves, it is sooo worth it! The last thing I would want to do when riding a wave is to shut my eyes to the power of the moment. The last thing I want to do when riding each wave through life is to shut my eyes to the powerful presence of God. Gospel & Life Meeng every fortnight.
