Rev. Tom Rives Pastor
A Word from Pastor Tom….. This is our Fall online edition of the Good News Letter. We are now publishing it once a quarter online and printing a limited number for those who do not have internet access. The printed copies are available at the Connection Center. We also have an email notification list to alert you as to when the newest edition is available online. You can turn in your email address at the Connection Center or Church Office if you want to be added to that notification list. The Fall Quarter (August, September & October) is packed full of so many opportunities for fellowship, worship, ministry, and fun. Our Youth have a Retreat planned around Rock the Universe. Our Children have Harvest Festival at the close of the quarter. Our Music Ministry is getting ready for Christmas programs. Our Drama Ministry will be rehearsing for a reprise of “Baggage Claim”. Some of the JOY group are off to Ridgecrest for the “Glory Conference”. Our entire church will be involved in our attendance campaign called “Family Reunion”. And all of these are just a tip of the iceberg. Take time to check all the ministry pages in this Good News Letter for what’s coming up this Fall. I want to take this opportunity to share how proud I am to be your pastor. Eighteen years ago when we began as a congregation, my plan was to retire at 62. When I got to that age, it just wasn’t the right time. It wasn’t the right time for my family and didn’t seem to be for the church family as well. But two years later I asked the church to help form an exit strategy committee so we could make plans for when I turned 65. Then my 66th birthday came and went and the time was still not right. And now I still don’t know exactly when but I know that we must keep making preparation for that day. However, the one thing that keeps coming back to me is “Look at what I would have missed in these last four years or just in this last year if I had retired.” I have had and continue to have the privilege to pastor the greatest group of people anywhere. You refuse to believe that there is nothing that God can’t accomplish in and through our church. The most recent example is 56 people doing construction work in the inner-city area of Montgomery, AL over these next three weeks at the end of July and first part of August. Two more trips to Brazil happened during these four years. We have had a full staff for almost the entire time. We have met and even exceeded budget during some of the worst years for our economy. I got to dedicate 4 years worth of babies born into our fellowship and honor four years worth of graduates. I got to be the pastor for new people who joined our church and got to see some of them accept Jesus as their Savior. I got to walk with many of you in the loss of loved ones. In other words, I got to be your pastor for four more years than we first thought. In addition to that, there are still some exciting times left for us to experience together. That’s why I’m proud to be your pastor.
Yours in Christ,
“Look what I would have missed...”

September 9 - October 28
During the months of September and October we will be conducting an attendance campaign called “Family Reunion”. Throughout these two months we are urging all of our Bible Study Classes to have everyone make a special effort to have perfect attendance. We also want to encourage each group to contact those people who have not been in a long time to return and give Bible Study another chance. A third emphasis will be for everyone inviting someone in hopes of reaching some new people for their class. During the campaign, our Sermon emphasis will focus on the theme of “Family Reunion”. Using the word FAMILY we will look at Faith, Attendance, Membership, Invite, Loyalty and Yes. Then it will all culminate on October 28th with a High Attendance emphasis with the theme “Family Rejoicing”.
Dear Friends:
With heavy hearts, yet celebrating the assurance of his Homegoing, we inform you of the passing of our beloved “Mr. Jack” - John M. (Jack) Barnes.
After a brave battle with cancer this past year, Jack passed from this earth to eternity with God on Friday, June 29, 2012.
A memorial service will be held on Friday evening, July 27, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at Carrollwood Baptist Church.
With sincere thanks for your love and support.
Tricia, Shirley, Karen, Randy and the Barnes family
