Have you graduated from a relevant Master’s program within the previous two years of the residency start date (i.e. after July 2014)?

Can you legally work in the US from July 2016 -- May 2017?

If you’re selected, are you willing and able to move to where your host institution is located?

The Residency• ten-month paid position, with benefits, as an archivist at a public media

organization

• week-long immersive advanced training session in digital and audiovisual media as well as access to ongoing education opportunities through the course of the residency

• mentorship throughout the project from established digital preservation professionals, as well as host organizations

• travel to three national professional conferences funded by AAPB NDSR

• a small educational stipend for the resident to take advantage of other professional development opportunities of their choice

Job Details• Residents will be hired and paid by their host institutions for a standard

forty-hour work week

• IMLS has funded a stipend of $29,977 in base pay for each resident for the ten months

• Benefits will not come out of this stipend, but are funded on top of it (budgeted at $6,571 – this may vary between institutions)

• Specific benefits (such as insurance & time off) will depend on what the host institution offers as standard for their employees

• Some host institutions may also offer support for residents above of what’s funded through IMLS, such as additional living stipends, travel funding, or paid membership in professional organizations; this is at the host institution’s discretion and not controlled by AAPB NDSR

Immersion WeekBoston, July 23-29

• We’ll fly residents out for the week and provide housing and food

• All hosts and residents will attend classes together

• Training in digital preservation, audiovisual preservation, project management & career development

• Visits to local public media stations and Boston preservation institutions

Ongoing Education

• Regularly scheduled webinars and virtual workshops, held approximately biweekly, for the first half of the residency

• We’ll schedule the first few months of workshops in advance

• Then we’ll start taking input from the residents on what topics are most important to cover

• Finally, we’ll encourage residents to reach out to speakers they’d like to hear, and start presenting their own work

Professional Development • 80% of resident’s time spent on host project, 20% on other projects

• ‘Other projects’ will include some work specifically for AAPB NDSR• attending webinars and NDSR events• blogging on the AAPB NDSR site• creating webinars and presentations• working on joint research projects for publication

• It will also include time to research, develop skills, and work on professional projects of resident’s choice

Conference Travel and Funding• Travel to three national conferences covered by the grant

• Conference #1: Association of Moving Image Archivists Conference, 2016

• Conference #2: TBD!

• Conference #3: Society of American Archivists Conference, 2017

• Residents will also have $589 to use on other professional development activities at their discretion (conferences, travel, online education, etc.)

Mentorship

Host Mentor: the resident’s supervisor at their host institution, who will orient them in the world of public broadcasting and consult directly on their work with their project and their deliverables

Advisory Board Mentor: a well-known digital preservation professional who has been involved with the development of the project, and will have regular virtual meetings with the resident to provide guidance and support on the preservation aspects of the project

Local Mentor: an established local or regional archivist who works in the same geographic area as the host, and will have regular in-person meetings with the resident to introduce them to the regional archival community

Organizational Commitment

• designate at least one staff member to mentor and allow them to dedicate working hours towards NDSR project and events

• treat the resident as a staff member w/ full access, email, business cards

• make sure other staff recognize resident’s position in organization

• provide space/supplies/equipment (software, hardware, storage, etc.)

• understand that approximately 20% of resident time will be spent on other projects (cohort activities, program requirements, professional development)

Host Mentor Commitment

• integrate resident into work and organizational culture of institution

• help the resident understand the public media landscape

• schedule regular meetings with the resident to discuss project progress

• review project deliverables with resident (consult Advisory Board mentor & local mentor when needed)

• attend AAPB NDSR events – virtually and in person

• conduct a professional review with the resident in the middle and at the end of the residency

• should answer the question ‘why are you interested in audiovisual digital preservation and/or digital preservation of public media’?

• shouldn’t take us more than 5 minutes to watch/review it

• does not have to be technically perfect or professionally edited

• shouldn’t use any materials that aren’t allowable under copyright or fair use

• other than that, anything goes!
