This will be the second time Texas Tech and Abilene Christian have faced each other in the last week after the Red Raiders took a decisive 3-0 victory on Sept. 3 at the United Spirit Arena. The match marked the first time Tech and ACU had played each other on the volleyball court since 1983. Breeann David totaled a match-high 17 kills while Aubree Piper added 12 to lead Texas Tech in its first match against ACU this year. Rachel Brummitt also collected 15 digs to help boost a Red Raider defense that held ACU to a .080 hitting percent- age, the lowest for a Tech opponent this season. The Red Raiders are coming off a disappointing weekend at the Cougar Challenge that was hosted by Washington State. Tech defeated Montana, 3-1, in the tournament opener before falling to Washington State, South Dakota and Eastern Wash- ington from there. Texas Tech will be looking to get back on the winning path Tuesday evening. The Red Raiders have never lost four straight non-conference matches under third year head coach Don Flora. Abilene Christian is the first of two Texas Tech opponents this week who the Red Raiders will be facing for the second time this season. Tech opens its second-annual Lone Star Showdown at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning against Montana, ap- proximately one week after the Red Raiders delivered the Grizzlies a 3-1 loss at the Cougar Challenge. The Red Raiders have never played two non-conference opponents twice in a season during the Big 12 era. Tech played both SMU and Grambling State twice during the 1996 and 2011 seasons, going 4-0 in those matches. Tuesday night’s match with ACU begins a busy stretch for the Red Raiders, who will play a total of six matches within a period of just seven days. Tech also travels to Incarnate Word next Monday in San Antonio before facing Texas State in San Marcos on Tuesday. Texas Tech enters this week with junior outside hitter Breeann David still leading the Big 12 in kills per set. David, who missed the final two matches of the Cougar Challenge last weekend, is averaging 4.33 kills a set along with a league-best 5.58 points per set. She also ranks second in the conference with 14 service aces and 10th with a .308 hitting percentage. Rachel Brummitt, who is on pace to snap her single-season digs record from a year ago, also enters this week ranked second in the Big 12 after averaging 5.19 digs per set through the first nine matches of the season. Texas Tech has found significant success in non-conference action under Don Flora, who has led the Red Raiders to a 30-11 mark in such matches during his two-plus seasons. LOOKING AHEADThe Red Raiders return to the United Spirit Arena this weekend to host the second-annual Lone Star Showdown presented by Under Armour. Texas Tech will open the two-day tournament at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning against Montana before re-turning to the court later that evening to battle Nevada. The Red Raiders close the tournament at 3 p.m. Saturday against Cal State Fullerton.

BRUMMITT ON PACE FOR YET ANOTHER MEMORABLE SEASONAfter such a memorable debut in scarlet and black a year ago, it may seem difficult to picture Rachel Brummitt duplicating or even surpassing her record-setting numbers from 2012. The junior is doing just that, though, as she is currently on pace to surpass the 510 digs she posted as a sophomore. Brummitt has totaled 166 digs so far this season, 18 more than her total through nine matches a year ago and that is without having played in an additional set as well. Her 5.19 digs per set currently ranks as the second-highest average in the Big 12, trailing only Kristen Hahn, who is posting 5.55 digs per frame. Brummitt is coming off two 20-dig performance at the Cougar Challenge which was highlighted by her season-high 29 digs in the finale against Eastern Washington. DAVID STARTS OFF JUNIOR YEAR IN STYLE For Breeann David, the 2013 season probably couldn’t have gotten off to a better start. The hard-hitting junior has totaled a team-high 104 kills in seven matches this season while averaging an impressive 4.33 which leads the Big 12 entering this week. David led the Red Raiders in kills over the first six matches of the year where she finished in double digits in each match, marking the longest streak to start a season since Kelly Johnson recorded 10 or more kills in the first seven matches of the 2004 season. The Denver City, Texas product is also the Big 12 leader in points per set and ranks second for service aces and 10th for hitting percentage. ABILENE CHRISTIAN BEGINS BUSY STRETCH FOR THE RED RAIDERSTexas Tech begins its busiest stretch of the season Tuesday night as the Red Raiders will play six matches over a seven-day stretch. In addition to its match with Abilene Christian on Tuesday and the Lone Star Showdown this weekend, Tech is also set to travel to face Incarnate Word in San Antonio next Monday and then Texas State in San Marcos on Tuesday. The Red Raiders will then receive a week off before opening Big 12 play on Sept. 25 at Oklahoma.

RED RAIDERS LOOK TO CONTINUE SUCCESS AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE OPPONENTSTexas Tech will look to continue its dominance over non-conference foes this weekend at the Cougar Challenge. The Red Raiders are a combined 30-11 all-time against out-of-league opponents under third-year head coach Don Flora, who is also 25-8 during his tenure in non-conference tournaments. Tech turned in a 14-2 record in non-conference action during Flora’s first season in 2011 and then posted an 11-5 mark a year ago.

SETTING THE PIPE(R)If the start of the 2013 campaign is any indication, Aubree Piper’s senior season could be a special one. The lone senior on the Texas Tech roster, Piper, who has battled several injuries throughout her career, is Tech’s second-leading offensive player so far this year, totaling 91 kills at a 2.84 per set rate. Her presence in the middle has not just been felt offensively, though, as she has also recorded 21 blocks while adding seven service aces. The Amarillo, Texas native has posted a .286 hitting percentage through nine matches, the second-highest total on the team for players with at least 100 attempts on the year. Her seven service aces also rank second as well.

FLORA PICKS UP CAREER WIN NO. 300 ON OPENING WEEKENDTexas Tech head coach Don Flora earned his 300th career victory at the collegiate level during opening weekend when the Red Raiders dropped Grand Canyon in four sets at the Wildcat invitational. The Red Raiders are now 5-4 on the year, improv-ing Flora’s overall record to 303-98 in 13-plus seasons at both the University of La Verne in California as well as Texas Tech. Flora, arguably one of the winningest active coaches at the Division-I level, led Tech to 29 victories over his first two seasons after inheriting a program that totaled just 30 wins in the five seasons prior to his arrival. The California native currently ranks fourth among Big 12 Conference coaches in career victories, trailing only Ray Bechard (Kansas), Jerritt Elliott (Texas) and Jim Barnes (Baylor). All three coaches have longer career tenures than Flora, who arrived in Lubbock after two seasons as an as-sistant at New Mexico State and 11 years as the head coach of his alma mater in La Verne where he amassed a 269-59 record (.820 winning percentage) and led the Leopards to the 2001 NCAA Division III National Championship. OPENING SET USUALLY KEY FOR THE RED RAIDERSOne of Don Flora’s mantra’s since his arrival in West Texas prior to the 2011 season has been to jump on opponents early. Through nine matches this year, Texas Tech has been fairly successful at doing so, winning five of the nine opening sets so far. Tech is a perfect 5-0 when gaining the opening lead this season and an impressive 28-6 under Flora when doing so as well. The Red Raiders have also never lost a 2-0 lead under Flora, going a perfect 19-0 over two-plus seasons.

MILLS, BRUMMITT NAMED TO WILDCAT INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMRachel Brummitt and Mikia Mills also earned a selection to the Wildcat Invitational all-tournament team after the two ju-niors helped lead the Red Raiders to a 3-1 showing in the event. Brummitt totaled a team-high 75 digs from the back row, averaging 5.36 per set which ranks third in the Big 12 after one weekend. She ended the tournament with a match-high 26 digs against host Weber State, marking the ninth time in her Tech career where she has reached the 20-dig mark. Mills, meanwhile, connected on 39 kills, second-most on the team, while adding nine digs and 11 blocks to collect her first all-tournament honor of her career. The middle blocker delivered 25 kills over the final two matches, including a career-high 13 in Tech’s four-set victory over Grand Canyon. Teammate Breeann David shared Most Valuable Player honors as well.

ENSCH MAKES IMPRESSIVE DEBUT IN UTAHTexas Tech freshman Courtney Ensch made what seemed to be a smooth transition to collegiate volleyball at the Wildcat Invitational as she connected on 26 kills from the right side while also adding eight digs and five blocks. Ensch, who arrived at Tech from Southlake Carroll High School, had one of the most accurate performances for a Red Raider in recent memory against Grand Canyon as she recorded 12 kills off just 19 attempts. Ensch had only two hitting errors in the match for a .526 hitting percentage, which was the highest for a Red Raider since Lydia McKay totaled the same average on Sept. 14 last year against Houston Baptist. Ensch closed the weekend hitting .327 over 13 sets, the second-highest percentage on the team.

PIPER RETURNS AS TEXAS TECH’S LONE SENIORWhen Aubree Piper looks walks across the court later this season on Senior Night, she will be the only player on Tech’s 19-person roster to receive flowers and framed jersey. The four-year senior, who has started in 52 matches the past three seasons, will be Tech’s leader both on the court and in the locker room for a program that despite returning 12 letterwinners also boasts seven newcomers. Piper enters her senior season with 440 career kills to go along with 174 total blocks and a .242 career hitting percentage. She ended 2012 with a .312 hitting percentage, which ranked ninth in school history for a single season. The Amarillo, Texas native is Tech’s most experienced returner, having played in 72 career matches despite battling various injuries throughout her career.

WHAT CAN BRUMMITT DO NEXT FOR TECH?After a record-breaking inaugural season in scarlet and black, the best question pertaining to Rachel Brummitt might just be what can she do next? The junior libero shattered the Tech single-season record in 2012 with 510 digs from the back row, finishing with 62 more than previous record holder Melissa McGehee (2000). The Plano, Texas native wrapped the 2012 season ranked fourth in the Big 12 for digs per set (4.32), trailing only Kristin Hahn (Iowa State), Brianne Riley (Kansas) and Maria Fernanda (Oklahoma). A similar, if not better, performance this year would already place Brummitt near the top 10 on the Tech career chart as well as Ginger Carter currently sits in 10th place with 1,092 digs from the 1991-94 seasons. Lisa Hilgers owns the Tech career record for digs after totaling 1,583 from 1995-98 that also ranks ninth in Big 12 history entering the 2013 season as well.

THE DENVER CITY HAMMERNot shy from coining nicknames, Texas Tech head coach Don Flora has long referred to junior outside hitter Breeann David as the “Denver City Hammer.” Named for both her hometown of nearby Denver City, Texas, as well as her hard-hitting ability, David enters her junior season as one of Tech’s key offensive weapons after she led the team with a 2.77 kills per set average a year ago. David, a six-rotation players normally, totaled 213 digs in 2012 despite missing six matches due to an ankle injury that sidelined her early into Big 12 play. David, who comes from a family of Texas Tech athletes, has also posted 239 digs and 135 blocks over her first two seasons in scarlet and black. Her father, Stan David, was a standout football player for the Red Raiders and eventual 1984 NFL Draft selection by the Buffalo Bills. Her mother, Megan David (formerly McGuire), also starred on the volleyball team while at Tech where she still ranks in the top 10 in most career blocking categories. Her younger brother, Clancy David, is also a walk-on football team currently at Tech.

ALLEN EXPECTED TO BOOST RED RAIDER ATTACK ON OUTSIDELike David, Texas Tech is also expecting sophomore transfer Jenna Allen to become an immediate presence on the outside as the newcomer joined the program last spring after spending the 2012 season at South Carolina. Allen appeared in 30 matches while making nine starts for the Gamecocks where she finished fourth on the team with 122 kills while also adding a 102 digs from the back row. Allen is one of two transfers for the Red Raiders from the Southeastern Conference (SEC), join-ing Lauren Douglass who arrived this fall from Ole Miss.

HINNEBURG NAMED BIG 12 PRESEASON CO-FRESHMAN OF THE YEARTexas Tech freshman Victoria Hinneburg was named the Big 12 Preseason Co-Freshman of the Year prior to the season, marking the first time a Red Raider has ever garnered the award. Hinneburg, a native of Leipzig, Germany, is just the third Red Raider to earn a conference preseason award, joining Colleen Smith (1999) and Justine Young (2010) who were both named the league’s Newcomer of the Year. One of the top international prospects in the 2013 class, Hinneburg will give Tech plenty of size and ability for the years to come as she is the tallest Red Raider listed on the roster at 6-4. Hinneburg shared the award with Kansas State’s Katie Brand.

RED RAIDERS WELCOME SEVEN NEWCOMERS TO THE ROSTERTexas Tech welcomes seven newcomers to its roster this fall with three being transfer players in Jenna Allen, Carlie Foust and Lauren Douglass. The Red Raiders also added four freshmen in Katie Daffer, Courtney Ensch, Marguerite Grubb and Victoria Hinneburg. Tech’s seven-player recruiting has been described as the most talented in Don Flora’s three-year tenure at Texas Tech. 2013 TEXAS TECH VOLLEYBALL NEWCOMERS Name POS YEAR Hometown Jenna Allen OH SO Lewisville, Texas Katie Daffer MB/RS FR Austin, Texas Lauren Douglass MB/RS RS FR Flower Mound, Texas Courtney Ensch RS FR Southlake, Texas Carlie Foust DS SO Amarillo, Texas Marguerite Grubb SET FR Houston, Texas Victoria Hinneburg RS/MB FR Leipzig, Germany

TECH TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH BOTH ACU AND MONTANAWhile playing opponents twice during the season is customary during Big 12 play, the Red Raiders will get to know both Abilene Christian and Montana well this year as Tech is scheduled to play both schools twice during the non-conference portion of the schedule. Tech opens its home slate next Tuesday (Sept. 3) against Abilene Christian and then travels roughly 120 miles south to face the Wildcats again on Sept. 10 in Abilene. The Red Raiders have never played two non-conference opponents twice in a season during the Big 12 era. Tech played both SMU and Grambling State twice during the 1996 and 2011 seasons, going 4-0 in those matches.

RED RAIDERS TO MAKE FIRST-EVER APPEARANCE ON ESPNThe Texas Tech volleyball program will face Iowa State in front of a national television audience on Oct. 30 as the Red Raiders and Cyclones were picked prior to the season to appear on ESPNU as part of the Big 12 Conference’s television schedule for the 2013 season. The match is part of a Big 12 double-header on the network as Baylor and Kansas will face off at 6 p.m. CT in Lawrence before the Red Raiders and Cyclones open with an 8 p.m. first serve later in the evening at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. This will be Tech’s first ever appearance on an ESPN network (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU). The Red Raiders are 20-17 all-time against the Cyclones and 10-8 when playing in Ames.

DOUGLASS TO SIT OUT 2013 SEASONRedshirt freshman Lauren Douglass will sit out the 2013 season due to NCAA transfer policy. Douglass, a native of Flower Mound, Texas, transferred to Tech from Ole Miss where she redshirted the 2012 campaign while recovering from injury. She will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in the 2014 season.

RED RAIDERS PICKED TO FINISH TIED FOR 7TH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON POLLTexas Tech was picked to finish tied for seventh in the Big 12 preseason poll that is voted on annually by the conference coaches. It was the highest preseason nod for the Red Raiders since 2001 when Tech was se-lected to sixth in what was then an 11-team league. The Red Raiders 19 points to finish tied for seventh with TCU while West Virginia rounded out the poll in ninth place. Texas was named the preseason favorite as the defending national champions garnered eight of nine first-place votes to sit in front of Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Baylor. BIG 12 CONTINUES TO BE AMONG TOP VOLLEYBALL CONFERENCESThe Big 12 will once again be one of the toughest volleyball conferences nationally this season as the league is boosted by preseason favorite and top-ranked Texas, while No. 15 Iowa State and No. 20 Kansas are also ranked in the top-25 of the AVCA preseason poll. Both Oklahoma and Kansas State received votes in the poll as well. The Big 12 has earned five or more bids to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past four seasons with Texas claiming the national title from a year ago.

RECAP FROM SEPT. 3 TEXAS TECH VS. ABILENE CHRISTIAN - SEPT. 3 BOX SCORELUBBOCK, Texas - Breeann David led Texas Tech with 17 kills while Aubree Piper added 12 of her own to help Texas Tech open its home slate in style Tuesday evening with a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-17, 25-19) of Abilene Christian at the United Spirit Arena.

The victory, Tech’s fourth straight heading into this week-end’s tournament at Washington State, improved the Red Raiders (4-1) to 31-7 all-time in home openers. It was also the third-straight year Tech had claimed a 3-0 victory in its first match on its home floor.

“We were pleased to get out 3-0 in the home opener,” said Tech head coach Don Flora, who is now 3-0 in home open-ers. “There are always a few jitters with it being the first time you play in front of your home crowd. We still have a few things to work on but I was proud of our effort tonight.”

Facing ACU (2-2) for the first time since 1983, Tech put the Wildcats in early holes in each of the opening two sets be-fore closing the match on a 9-4 run to breakup what was then a close third set. This was the first of two matches this year between the two schools who will meet again next Tuesday in Abilene.

Like she was last weekend at Weber State, David played an important factor in Tech’s attack all night as she extended her season-opening streak of being in double figures for kills to five straight.

David opened the match 8-for-10 on kills in the opening set alone before finishing 17-for-34 with just one error for a .471 hitting percentage that her highest of the season and second-highest of her career. She also came close to a double-double with eight digs to go along with four blocks and three of Tech’s four aces.

Piper was also accurate from the field as she went 12-for-22 for a .364 hitting percentage. Tech wrapped the match hit-ting .256 as a team, its second-highest average so far this season.

Tech held ACU to just a .080 hitting percentage as the Wild-cats totaled 24 attacking errors, 10 of which that came off Red Raider blocks. Corrie Reeder and Jennifer Loerch led the Wildcats with eight kills apiece.

Rachel Brummitt led the Red Raider back row with 15 digs while Emily Wright also added six and Emily Ruetter posted five to go along with her 33 assists and two blocks.
