For many chi ldren, l iv ing in Dubai can be endless fun with the array of amusement parks , mal ls , indoor
playgrounds, toy and gadget shops and many museums throughout the Emirates , a l l in a very safe and secure
environment .For many expats l iv ing in the UAE though, the great outdoors is the best playground, especial ly for
the ones who exper ienced a chi ldhood without the IPAD, smartphones or games consoles . For those of us the who
grew up in the 70’s and 80’s , or ‘Generat ion Y ’ as we’re affect ionately cal led by marketers – tree branches were
our monkey bars , soi l from the garden was our sand box, puddles from the rain were the art i f ic ia l fountains and
our fr iends stor ies and games were our col lect ive entertainment . I t was safe to play out on the street in our
neighbourhoods and we never got bored! In fact , i f you came home before dinnert ime and weren’t covered in a
few cuts and bruises then i t wasn’t a good day! Outdoor play taught us so many th ings when we were growing up,
from how we solve squabbles with people , to how to stand up and dust ourselves off when we fal l down. Losing
was just as much an important part of the game as winning but gett ing involved in the f i rst place and learning to
take r isks , wel l that was crucial to help us make fr iends, develop res i l ience and perseverance throughout
l i fe .Nowadays i t is widely acknowledged that chi ldren are becoming increasingly focused on electronics and
gadgets and there is concern amongst parents , experts and the media that th is ‘screen t ime’ adversely affects
their social , p lay, f ine and gross motor sk i l ls , a long with their expressive language and tact i le percept ion. This is
undoubtedly confounded here in the UAE where for half the year the sun scorches down and prohibi ts lengthy
outdoor play l ike the ones we enjoyed in yesteryear . Alas !Many parents when they f i rst v is i t us at ABLE UK wi l l te l l
us that their chi ld has met several key developmental mi lestones including, master ing the alphabet , numbers ,
colours and even recit ing many rhymes. What parents often do not consider is the importance of play. Due to
busy parent working schedules and so many other factors , chi ldren can miss that essent ial p layt ime that al lows
them to use their creat iv i ty whi le developing their imaginat ion, dexter i ty , and physical , cognit ive , and emotional
strength. P lay is important to healthy brain development . I t is through play that chi ldren at a very ear ly age
engage and interact in the world around them. P lay doesn’t have to be outs ide, with expensive toys , or in fancy
playground. Play can s imply be staying at home bui ld ing a blanket fort , p lant ing in smal l pots , making homemade
clays and s l ime, or even making a snack together . With these s imple act iv i t ies the chi ld can develop more trust in
relat ionships , can also learn new things creat ively together with their parents , leading the chi ld to be more
expressive and conf ident both home and school .
