Conclusions…

Isothermal oxidation tests at 1000oC for 100 h showed negligibleweight gain (~0.14–0.25 mg/cm2) of three types of glass-ceramiccoated substrate while the bare nimonic alloy substrate had moreweight gain (~0.69 mg/cm2) under identical conditions.

The glass-ceramic bonded TBC system showed high oxidation andthermal shock resistance. The thermal gradient property andthermal conductivity of the present TBC system were satisfactory.

The four point bend tests on three types of glass-ceramic coatedsubstrate showed that the bending elastic modulus values of thecoating-substrate systems were in the range of 124–130 GPa at800oC. These tests also indicated stress relaxation of the glass-ceramic coatings at the higher temperatures up to 800oC.

Page 24: About OMICS Group - d2cax41o7ahm5l.cloudfront.net · About OMICS Group ... Engineering, Management and Technology ... 35 Ar/10 H2 Carrier gas (Ar) flow in the feeder nozzle (standard

Conclusions…

The four point bend test on the TBC system displayed low stiffness(bending elastic modulus−45–52 GPa at room temperature) that led tolow residual stresses in the TBC and consequently relatively highthermo-mechanical stability. Measurement of the TBC stiffnessassessed the reliability of the thermal barrier coating system.

Stress relaxation property of glass-ceramic bonded TBC system wasquite satisfactory.

Based on the present study it can be concluded that glass-ceramicmaterial can be effectively utilized as bond coat in the thermal barriercoating (TBC) system.
