SHGSPC HUNT TEST – DENISE AVERY

The annual Sleepy Hollow GSP Club double header Hunt Tests were held on Saturday, September 16, 2017, at the East Moun -tain Shooting Preserve in Dover Plains, NY. The day started out muggy and a bit overcast, but the sun soon came out affording a beautiful, but rather warm day, as is typical for these tests.

The club is blessed with a beautiful facility belonging to member Mike Holomakoff and family. The East Mountain Shooting Preserve provides 2 scenic courses that run along a mountainside, well-manicured to maintain excellent cover providing a chal -lenging yet fair opportunity for all to prove their hunting abilities. The clubhouse is comfortable and inviting with a complete kitchen that the club fully takes advantage of, providing a quick breakfast first thing in the morning and a full Italian style lun -cheon welcoming all participants in between the morning and afternoon tests.

Sleepy Hollow GSPC holds 2 tests on Saturday, it would be a fantastic opportunity for all to find another club to take on Sun -day, providing 4 tests to run a dog in one weekend. Mike has an awesome group of gunners at East Mountain, all with extensive experience in shooting over pointing dogs. He provides SHGSPC with great flying chukar for the day as well.

Judges Dean Browning and Skip Smith judged the Master/Senior course and Doreen Torre and John DeSandre judged the Ju -niors in the morning, vice versa for the afternoon. With a very nice sized entry, I am sure they logged in many miles by the end of the day. This great group of judges were very fair and extremely helpful to all participants.

Sleepy Hollow has an awesome team running the tests year after year, Jane Rae as the Hunt Test Chairperson does all the orga -nizing and Barbara VanBlarcum, the Test Secretary, does an amazing job of keeping the paperwork in order from start to finish (al-ways with a smile and a positive attitude), along with a fantastic bunch of members that come out to work planting birds, mar-shalling and run the kitchen. Many hands make light work, and a beautiful setting on a warm, late summer day spent with dogs doing something they love, makes for many smiles! Congratulations to the many qualifiers and those earning new titles!

SHOW HANDLING SEMINAR WITH VALERIE NUNES-ATKINSON – DIANE STENDAHL

The Sleepy Hollow GSP club hosted a two day show handling seminar on August 12th and 13th at the High Point Training Cen-ter in Middletown, NY. The seminar was taught by Valerie Nunes-Atkinson, an all-breed handler from Temecula, CA. Although Valerie shows many di erent breeds, GSPs are her first love and she has had tremendous success showing them for others as wellff as many she has bred. Most recently Valerie won Best in Show at Westminster in 2016 with “CJ”.

We had a nice turn out for the seminar, approximately 15 participants each day. The Saturday seminar was tailored for the be -ginner and intermediate handlers, and Sunday’s seminar was for our more advanced handlers. Each day we began with Valerie demonstrating how she starts working with puppies destined for the show ring. Using some of our club members’ puppies, she worked the them on the table for stack training as well as on the ground for leash and gaiting training. I think even longtime breeders took away some new ideas about training their youngsters.

Valerie took some time to discuss her background and the journey she has been on as a professional handler. As an all breed handler, Valerie has a very large tool box when it comes to presenting dogs. This became very evident as the day went on and Valerie worked with the handlers and their dogs individually and in small groups. As an observer I was amazed to see the amount of improvement all the handlers and their dogs made over the course of 7-8 hours. The level of team work between handler and dog was really quite amazing.

We ended each day with a mock dog show with yours truly as the judge. To keep the afternoon a bit light hearted we had Valerie acting as the coach/stage Mom from outside the ring o ering instructions and advice. Since the seminar many of theff participants have been entered in shows with some amazing results - now this is music to our ears!! Congratulations!!
