SCENTS Uses of Scent

Billboard: The client’s goal is to draw attention to a specific product. The scent used will be the actual scent of the product. Example: Coffee in a convenience store or chocolate in a candy shop.

Thematic: A scent that is utilised to tie in with all sensory elements of a visual program to communicate an idea, message, story or locale. Example: Coconut in the bathing suit department or holiday scents during the holidays

Ambient: Ambient scents are similar to thematic in that they communicate an idea. Usually the client simply wants to add scent to enhance their store environment.

Signature: Refers to a custom scent created for and used solely by a specific client. This is a scent that communicates a brand.

It’s not enough to just add scent to your environment. It’s about adding the right scent, at the right time and place that coordinates with other elements of your business. Scent can draw attention to a product, express an idea or theme, enhance your environment or create a distinct experience that your customers will remember.

SCENTS

Top notes:Scents that are perceived immediately on application of a fragrance. Top notes create the scents that form a person’s initial impression of a fragrance. Because of this, they are very important in the selling of a fragrance. The scents of this note class are usually described as “fresh,” “assertive” or “sharp.” The compounds that contribute to top notes are strong in scent, very volatile, and evaporate quickly. Citrus and ginger scents are common top notes.

Middle notes:The scent that emerges after the top notes dissipate. The middle note compounds form the “heart” or main body of a fragrance and act to mask the often unpleasant initial impression of base notes, which become more pleasant with time. Not surprisingly, the scent of middle note compounds is usually more mellow and “rounded.” Scents from this note class appear anywhere from 2 minutes to 1 hour after the application of a fragrance. Lavender and rose scents are typical middle notes. Top notes and middle notes are sometimes described together as Head notes.

Base notes:The scent that appears after the departure of the top notes. The base and middle notes together are the main theme of a scent. Base notes bring depth and solidness to a fragrance. Compounds of this class are often the fixatives used to hold and boost the strength of the lighter top and middle notes. The compounds of this class of scents are typically rich and “deep” and are usually not perceived until 30 minutes after the application of the fragrance or during the period of fragrance dry-down. Musk, vetiver and scents of plant resins are commonly used as base notes.

Scent Composition

The fragrance pyramid describes the volatility of the fragrance ingredients, or how quickly they fade away.

The top note, the lightest of the notes, creates your first encounter with the fragrance, and is designed to be a fleeting impression. Then the middle notes of the fragrance begin to develop, as the fragrance interacts with the environment. Finally, the base notes, derived from the ingredients with the highest molecular weight, begin to emerge.
