CES Mission and VisionCommon MissionCollierville Elementary strives to provide a secure environment which challenges students academically and allows them to be confident, self-directed learners and leaders.

BeliefsSeveral components must exist in order to maintain an exemplary school which develops a secure and challenging learn-ing environment. Faculty and staff at Collierville Elementary provide a learn-ing environment which is conducive to developing the intellectual, physical, and emotional potential of each student.

Collierville Elementary stakeholders understand that all students can learn, and thus are responsive to the unique learning styles of every student. There-fore, Collierville Elementary establishes high expectations of all students in order to maintain levels of understand-ing. Collierville Elementary is a learning community, where educators reflect upon teaching practices for the purpose of professional growth and the contin-ued enhancement of quality instruction.

Shared VisionCollierville Elementary understands the importance of a school/community

connection that is conducive to a high performing academic environment. Collierville Elementary views stakehold-ers as colleagues, with whom collabora-tion is vital in order to establish clear purpose and direction in maintaining an exceptional school. This collabora-tion fosters shared decision-making and encourages participation from all stakeholders. Collierville Elementary is built upon research-based data driven decisions. Internal and external commu-nication ensures alignment of policies and procedures to maintain the devel-opment of the school as a community of learners and leaders .

The Little Dragon Family,

Welcome back to school! For those of you joining us for the first time, we hope that you feel welcome here at Collierville E. For those families that are returning, we hope you have missed us over the summer as much as we have missed you! It is our mission to equip Little Dragons with the skills neces-sary to be successful in learning, leader-ship, and life. As a result, we have planned an exciting year full of activities and ex-periences that will help your child learn, grow, and laugh.

Our TNReady scores from last school year came back, and we are so excited to see the growth our school made! We are very proud of our students for working hard all year long and trying their very best on the state assessment. However, while TNReady assesses how well your child demonstrates his or her ability to answer questions on state standards, it does not assess or mea-sure the great things about your child that makes him or her unique and special. A test cannot tell you how much your child is loved or cared for at Collierville Elemen-tary, nor does it take into account the chal-lenges a child may have faced outside of the school and parents’ control. We hope you will be proud of your child’s intellec-tual ability but just as proud, if not even more so, of how well your child is a friend

to those in need, has compas-sion toward others, and gives his or her best effort. Enjoy your results and be very proud of your child’s progress while re-membering that every child has a unique story.

I try to frequently post and share some of the great things going on at school on Twitter. You can follow the school at @CESLittleDragon and me at @MrSalyerCville. Our wonderful PTA main-tains a Facebook page that contains help-ful information as well. Finally, homework resources and district information can be found on our school’s website.

I am honored to serve as principal of Col-lierville Elementary School. It is truly a privilege to be part of a community where parents, teachers, and students care for each other and strive to build positive rela-tionships that support academic and social growth. I am always a phone call (853-3300) or email ([email protected]) away. We look forward to another incredible year!

Every Dragon. Every Day.

A Message from the President

1. To promote the welfare of children and youth in the home, school, com-munity, and place of worship.

2. To raise the standard of home life.3. To secure adequate laws for the care and pro-

tection of children and youth. 4. To bring into closer relation the home and

school, that parents and teachers may cooper-ate intelligently in the education of children and youth.

5. To develop between educators and the gen-eral public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advan-tages in physical, mental, social and spiritual education.

PTA Objectives

Welcome back to school Little Dragons and Little Dragon families. I hope everyone had a safe and happy summer break. As you can see from this Dragon Flyer edition we have made the decision to “go green” by utiliz-ing emails as our way of distrib-uting our newsletter. It seems that more and more aspects of our lives have become digitized so we hope you enjoy having copies of the Dragon Flyer at the click of a button.

Now that August is here it’s time to renew your PTA member-ships. Our goal each year is to have 100% memberships. That means a membership for each student, staff and faculty mem-ber at CES. If you have more than one student at CES please consider purchasing enough memberships to represent each student. Anyone can be a PTA member; parents, students, grandparents, aunts/uncles, and even neighbors. Becom-ing a member of the PTA does not mean we will hound you for volunteering in the health room nor does it mean you are obligated to attend the general membership meetings, but it will help you stay connected to the PTA throughout the school year. The membership roster is how we build our email data base each year. Stephanie Mc-Gavic is our membership chair;

drop her an email if you have any questions: [email protected].

Speaking of volunteering, we have multiple areas at CES that rely on our loyal and loving vol-unteers. We need volunteers in the health room, cafeteria, copy room and library. Should you have a few extra hours in the day once a week you could devote your time to the Little Dragons this school year, please contact Melissa Bollinger at [email protected].

Be sure to put Grandparents Day on your calendars – Sep-tember 6th & 7th. This new event is going to be one you sure don’t want to miss. Look for more information to be coming home as to how you can RSVP for this event.

One last item I’d like to draw to your attention is Dragon Dash….dust off your tennis shoes par-ents, we invite you to join the Little Dragons as they run 4 laps around the track for our Fall fundraiser on October 5th. This fundraiser funds our bud-get and provides wish list items - - what’s that you are wonder-ing? Well our budget allows the PTA to have events for the students such as grand parents

day, muffins with mom, donuts with dads, Memphis in May day, Walk and Bike to school day and many other fun and educational events. Wishlist items are items requested by the school and our principal that Collierville Schools does not provide for them. A few wishlist items we have been able to provide in the past are collaborative learning tables for every classroom in the school, Promethean Boards in many of the classrooms, restocked grade level recess supplies, and sent our teachers and staff to educational learning seminars and conferences.

2018-19 is going to be a great year for each and every one of the little dragons. Please know I have a great board of volunteers that help make each PTA event a success. If you have any ques-tions about any aspect of PTA, we are all are just a click away via our CES PTA emails (see the list of officers later in this edi-tion for specific email). Don’t hesitate to drop us an email with a question or concern.

In 2011, the CES-PTA began the IMPACT Grant Program. IMPACT Grants are awarded to CES faculty every year to provide additional support to CES students.

Each year the CES-PTA hosts the

annual Fair in the Lair to provide funding for the IMPACT Program.

CES PTA President, Milly Mount, announced the amounts for the 2018–2019 IMPACT Grants. A total of $17,125.00 will be awarded

to the faculty of CES. These grants will have a profound impact on your students in the classroom. Thank you for support-ing The Fair in the Lair and this important initiative at CES.

Students are allowed on campus beginning at 8:40 a.m. All exter-nal doors are locked promptly at 9:00 a.m. After 8:59 a.m. you cannot drop your child off on campus—you must escort your child to the office for check-in. Dismissal will begin promptly at 4:00 p.m. each day.

Car Riders Car riders enter and exit in the rear parking lot. Returning families please continue to use your car rider numbers from last year. New families were assigned car rider numbers on Orientation Day.

The car rider line begins on White Road, turns onto Car-ruthers, and then turns left on Burrows (see map above).

You will enter the parking lot from there. There is NO LEFT TURN from White Rd or Bur-rows to Burrows during car rider line.

Parents, please DO NOT turn left into the line in the morn-ing or afternoons. Please pro-ceed down White Road and, if necessary, down Hermitage Trail until you reach the end of the line. Interrupting the line will cause a slow down in the process. PTA Volunteers will be out to help direct traffic.

During drop-off and pick-up please postpone any phone calls while waiting in the car line. During pick-up we are required to place your child in the back seat.

Bus Riders Bus riders enter and exit at the North side of the building (K–1 Hall).

Walkers/Bike Riders Walkers/bike riders enter and exit at the end of the building closest to their home, North (K–1 Hall) or South (2–3 Hall). No students should be walk-ing in front of the building on Peterson Lake Road.

Transportation Information

Teachers and staff will be posted at all entry and exit areas during arrival and dismissal.

We are excited to announce the 2018 Dragon Dash theme

“THE GREATEST SHOW”

The Collierville Elementary School PTA wants to assist our school in providing our children with quality educational opportunities. Keeping them competitive in today’s environment is of great value to everyone. For this to be accomplished, it will require the financial assistance from the members of our community.

The PTA sponsors two fundraisers each year. Our major fundraiser is our Dragon Dash, which will take place on October 5th. Our children are raising funds for their school while focusing on physical fitness. All of the funds raised will stay with Collier-ville Elementary School. Last year’s Dragon Dash raised $43,639.31!

Spirit Week will be held October 1-5th. Lets get excited about Dragon Dash 2018!

Look for information to come home early September. For more information email Susan Gyura at [email protected].

Participating in the Collierville Elementary Box Tops program is one of the easiest ways to support CES. All money earned from the Box Tops program goes directly to the school. Small amounts can really add up! Last year we earned over $3,500.

Here are some tips to help support the Box Tops program:

Check expiration dates! Please discard expired Box Tops. We will not get credit for these.

Clip on the dotted line. With the tens of thousands of Box Tops we receive, this makes handling easier and helps us save on postage.

Count your labels into groups of 50 and put them in Ziploc baggies or enve-lopes. If you don’t have 50, write how many you have for easier counting.

Send in any Bonus Box Tops separately

Have friends and family col-lect for you too!

We will be sending home more information soon about our Fall Box Tops contest. First time sub-scribers can also earn the school 5 Bonus Box Tops (10 cents each) by signing up to get the Box Tops email newsletter by September 30. You’ll receive coupons for Box Tops products, free sample offers, and Bonus Box Tops offers. Just go

to BTFE.com/signup to get started and enter our school ID number 157619.

Welcome back and keep collecting those Box Tops!
