AC Milan were confirmed as winners of Group H despite losing their unbeaten record against AEK Athens FC two weeks ago so the main focus in this game is whether LOSC Lille Métropole can qualify alongside them - to do so they have to better AEK's result at RSC Anderlecht. Lille have six points, one behind the in-form Greek outfit, but if the teams finish level the French side will progress thanks to their superior head-to-head record. • Yet it is also possible for Claude Puel's side to miss out on qualification for the UEFA Cup as well and finish in last place. If they lose and Anderlecht beat AEK then that would put the Belgian champions equal on six points with Lille but in third position on head-to-head. • Milan's defeat in Athens was a surprise because before Matchday 4 AEK had gone 21 games in the competition without sampling victory. But the 1-0 win against Lille transformed confidence and they then defeated their Italian visitors by the same scoreline, Júlio César's 32nd-minute free-kick hoisting AEK up into second place. It inflicted the Rossoneri's first defeat in the section and their first away from home in the competition in seven games. Man on a mission • Meanwhile Lille's hopes were experiencing a downward turn as they were held 2-2 at the Stade Félix-Bollaert by Anderlecht. Peter Odemwingie put the home team ahead but Mbo Mpenza was a man on a mission for the visitors and having equalised that goal he struck again at the start of the second half after Nicolas Fauvergue had restored Lille's lead. • In the Matchday 2 fixture between the teams a combination of spirited teamwork and Milan's wayward finishing enabled Lille to claim an impressive 0-0 draw against the six-time European champions. Some believed Lille's porous defence would provide rich pickings for their opponents but ultimately they had as many good chances as the visitors to take victory. • It was the first time the teams had met. Milan traditionally have the upper hand against French opponents at home - winning seven and drawing two of the nine games which began with the narrow UEFA Cup first-round defeat of AJ Auxerre in 1985. Recent semi-final • Last season, Carlo Ancelotti's team drew 0-0 against Olympique Lyonnais at the Stade Gerland before winning the home leg 3-1 to set up a UEFA Champions League semi-final with eventual winners FC Barcelona. One notable Milan defeat by French opposition was the 1-0 loss to Olympique de Marseille in the 1992/93 UEFA Champions League final, a game which featured current stars Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta. • Lille have faced only two other Italian teams in UEFA competition and in each case experienced the winning feeling away from home. In the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round they won 2-0 at Parma FC, a result which meant they qualified for the group stage for the first time. After the group campaign they then went into the UEFA Cup where in the third round they beat ACF Fiorentina 1-0 in Tuscany and 2-0 at home. • This season Lille are yet to lose a game in which they have scored the opening goal. Before this weekend's triumphat Nancy they had not won after conceding first.

• Forwards Odemwingie and Keita were both rested ahead of the Milan game while defender Peter Franquart (thigh),midfielder and captain Stéphane Dumont (knee) and striker Audel (shoulder) were all ruled out with injury.

• Audel, who has been sidelined with a shoulder injury, resumed training on 29 October. He could return to the Lilleside before the end of the year.

• Lille's problems increased after the Nancy match as goalkeeper Sylva and right-back Tafforeau both picked upinjuries. The Senegalese custodian was forced to leave the field late in the second half with a broken finger whileTafforeau completed 90 minutes but complained of a groin problem.

• Coach Claude Puel said: "We were unhappy to give away the first goal from a deflection but I got the reaction Iwanted in the second half. It was a hard-fought win but it was tarnished by Sylva's injury. I think he has a broken fingerand we'll miss him for a long time now, especially in Milan."

• On 25 November, Lille drew 1-1 at home to Ligue 1 strugglers AS Monaco FC, with only Bodmer's late strike earninga point. It was a result that continued a six-year run without a win for Lille at home to Monaco.

• After the draw against his former side, Puel said: "I want to congratulate my players for their second-half performance. We deserved to draw level and a strong reaction is always necessary when trying to get back into a game againstsuch experienced opposition. The players who came off the bench also brought something to the game."

• Promising midfielder Matthieu Robail is an emerging talent after winning a regular role in the first team and scoringan important goal in the 3-1 home win against AEK. Now the 21-year-old wants to play alongside his twin brotherSamuel Robail in the first team, saying: "We have experienced the same ups and downs together. We have been inthe same side since we were 13. It is our dream to walk out at the Stade Grimonprez-Jooris together for the Lilleteam."

• Lille's new stadium is scheduled to be completed in 2010. A brand new training facility at Camphin-en-Pévèle is dueto be ready next June.

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones

Holders FC Barcelona are not having an easy ride this time around. Failure to beat Werder Bremen would make themthe first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (Thisrecord, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage)

In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregatein the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.

Manchester United FC could become the first team to win their first three games in a group stage and still not progressif they fail to pick up at least a point against SL Benfica.

Alessandro Costacurta will extend the UEFA Champions League oldest player record he set on Matchday 5 to 40years and 226 days if he features against LOSC Lille Métropole. Against AEK Athens FC on Matchday 5, the veterandefender was 40 years and 211 days, 94 days older than previous record holder, Club Brugge KV goalkeeper DanyVerlinden when he played the full 90 minutes against AFC Ajax on 9 December 2003. Laurent Blanc is currently theoldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days having found the net for Manchester UnitedFC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002.

For those already-qualified clubs considering giving a chance to young players, Celestine Babayaro is the youngestplayer to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSCAnderlecht against FC Steaua Bucuresti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute.

PFC Levski Sofia have double incentive for wanting to do well at Chelsea FC. They are aiming to avoid joining 1. FCKošice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. TheSlovakian side did just that in their maiden campaign in 1997/98, and have not returned to the competition since. Onlyfive other teams have ever gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point namely SK RapidWien (05/06), RSC Anderlecht (04/05), FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (02/03, first and second groupstage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (01/02, first group stage).

Levski have also shipped 15 goals in their first five outings this term, just four short of the record number let in duringa group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC (19) in the 1995/96 campaign.

Spartak have not won in their last 22 games in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK AthensFC on Matchday 3 this season. AEK ended their run of 21 games without a win with a 1-0 home victory against LOSCLille Métropole on Matchday 4.

Spartak extended their sequence without a win to 22 games with the 2-2 home draw against FC Bayern München onMatchday 5. Those 22 games are made up of 17 defeats and five draws. The last time Spartak won was 22 November2000 with a 4-1 second group stage victory at home against Arsenal FC. Interestingly, Spartak’s last away win wasat Sporting Clube de Portugal, their Matchday 6 opponents, when they won 3-0 in Lisbon on 17 October 2000. Theyhave not won in their last 12 away games in Europe’s premier club competition.

For all their defensive solidity, CSKA have only scored two goals in the first five games. They can take comfort fromthe achievement of Villarreal CF last season and AS Roma in the 2002/03 first group stage, as both clubs advancedto the next phase with just three goals to their name. Villarreal are a particularly noteworthy example, as they madeit all the way to the semi-finals in their debut campaign in the competition.

AEK and AS Roma can still go through with seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introducedin 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/00 and Liverpool FCin 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, afeat achieved by Rangers FC and Bremen last term.

• UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

Domestic champions: This season's competition features 16 domestic league winners from last season, but noneof the eight groups comprising the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League features four champions. Only Group A featuresthree league winners from the last campaign with England, Spain and Bulgaria represented by their champions, namely Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona and PFC Levski Sofia. The fourth club in the group, Werder Bremen, finishedsecond in last season's Bundesliga, five points behind FC Bayern München. All of the remaining groups feature twodomestic league winners with the exception of Group H, where Belgian side RSC Anderlecht are the only champions.Group rivals AEK Athens FC were runners-up in Greece, while LOSC Lille Métropole and AC Milan were classifiedin third place in Ligue 1 and Serie A respectively. Alongside 16 champions, there are nine runners-up and six third-placedfinishers. Arsenal FC are the only club in the group stage to have finished in fourth place in their domestic leaguechampionship last season.

Consecutive participations: This season, Manchester United FC have extended their consecutive participation inthe UEFA Champions League to eleven, a record in the competition. Bayern, PSV Eindhoven, Olympiacos CFP andReal Madrid CF are making their tenth consecutive appearances, one ahead of Arsenal.

Knockout streak: In qualifying for the 2005/06 knockout phase, Real Madrid CF equalled Manchester United FC'srecord of nine consecutive seasons in advancing past the group stage. While United's streak came to an end lastseason, Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. In those nine seasons,United won the competition once while they also advanced as far as the semi-finals twice, the quarter-finals four timesand the first knockout round twice in the other eight seasons. Madrid, meanwhile, have won the competition threetimes in the last nine years while they advanced as far as the semi-finals twice and the quarter-finals twice. However,in the last two seasons their interest in the competition has ended at the first knockout round.

European return: Of all 32 clubs competing in this season's UEFA Champions League, only FC Spartak Moskvaand FC Girondins de Bordeaux did not participate in a UEFA club competition during the 2005/06 season. Indeed, the two clubs are making their first appearance in UEFA club competition since the 2003/04 season.

Past masters: Four clubs competing in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League were involved in the competition whenit started during the 1992/93 season. AC Milan were beaten finalists (losing to Olympique de Marseille), while PSVEindhoven, PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. In addition, AEK Athens FC and FCBarcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle before the group stage.

Long road for debutants: Five clubs have advanced to the group stage from the European Champion Clubs' Cupsecond qualifying round including this season's two debutants, FC København and PFC Levski Sofia. They are joinedby FC Spartak Moskva, FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Steaua Bucuresti as clubs who had to play four matches to claimtheir place in the group stage of the competition. A debutant has not won the competition since Juventus in 1995/96,the Italian side becoming the third club to achieve this following Olympique de Marseille (1992/93, first UEFA ChampionsLeague final) and AFC Ajax (1994/95).

No qualifiers: Of the 32 clubs involved in the group stage, only AS Roma and FC Girondins de Bordeaux have yetto play a qualifying round match in order to reach the UEFA Champions League. Roma are making their fourthappearance in the competition, while Bordeaux are involved for the second time.

Players now play more matches than ever before and in doing so they place theirbodies under excessive physical strain. Head coach profiles

Carlo AncelottiDate of birth: 10 June 1959Nationality: ItalianPlaying career: Parma FC, AS Roma, AC MilanCoaching career: AC Reggiana, Parma FC, Juventus, AC Milan

One of only five people – the others being Miguel Muñoz, Giovanni Trapattoni, Johan Cruyff and Frank Rijkaard – tohave lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup as both a player and coach, Carlo Ancelotti is one of the mosthighly-regarded coaches in European football. He claimed the UEFA Champions League in 2003 in only his secondseason at the AC Milan helm - he would have added a second but for Liverpool FC's stunning fightback two yearslater - and has added Serie A and Coppa Italia medals to an individual trophy cabinet teeming with honours.

His coaching career is proving every bit as illustrious as his days as a no-nonsense midfielder. Ancelotti started outat AS Roma, winning the Scudetto in 1983, before moving to Milan three years later after his hometown club deemedhim too injury-prone. He quickly went about proving them wrong, thriving at San Siro in five years of unyielding successwhich brought two more Serie A crowns and back-to-back European Cup wins in 1989 and 1990.

He started his coaching career in similar vein, leading AC Reggiana to promotion in his debut season in 1996 andwent on to Parma FC who he guided to an unprecedented second-placed finish. By 1998 he was at Juventus andalthough he never managed to better runners-up spot, Ancelotti did earn a return to San Siro in summer 2001. Therehe thrived, winning the UEFA Champions League, Coppa Italia and UEFA Super Cup in his second season andcompleting the set with the Serie A title in 2003/04. He guided the Rossoneri to second in the next two campaigns, although they were subsequently demoted to third last term following the Italian sporting fraud tribunal. In March, heextended his contract until summer 2008.

Claude PuelDate of birth: 2 September 1961Nationality: FrenchPlaying career: AS Monaco FCCoaching career: AS Monaco FC, LOSC Lille Métropole

LOSC Lille Métropole coach Claude Puel may not be the most high-profile figure at the helm of a UEFA ChampionsLeague side but he is no stranger to big European nights having spent 22 years as player and coach at AS MonacoFC. Puel amassed 488 league games as Monaco's midfield anchorman, winning two French titles (1982 and 1988)and the 1991 French Cup in addition to reaching the 1992 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final and the UEFA ChampionsLeague semi-finals two years later.

When appointed Lille coach in the summer of 2001, Puel focused on the long-term, laying down the foundations fora five-year plan; his ambitions came to fruition well ahead of schedule as he steered his team into Europe's premierclub competition in less than four years thanks to a second-placed finish in Ligue 1 in 2004/05. Although Lille failedto progress from the UEFA Champions League group stage the next season, the club went on to the UEFA CupRound of 16 - losing to eventual winners Sevilla FC.

Puel's coaching philosophy is simple: assemble a team with high fitness levels, stamina and speed in abundance anda miserly defence and - with a bit of luck - any team is beatable. Such virtues helped Monaco to the French title in2000 and earned Lille a UEFA Intertoto Cup victory in 2004 before the northern club secured second place in Ligue1 in 2005 - their best finish for 50 years. They earned another tilt at the UEFA Champions League after finishing thirdin the French top flight in 2006 and defeating F.Y.R. Macedonia's FK Rabotnicki in the third qualifying round thatAugust with Puel having signed a new contract earlier in the year.

Referee

UEFAUCLDoBNat.Name603129.07.1963ENGGraham Poll

Graham Poll is one of the most experienced referees in Europe, his status earning him a wealth of big-gameappointments over the years.

The 43-year-old from Tring, just north of London, spent five years in the English professional game as an assistantreferee having reached the national list in that role at the surprisingly early age of 22. He graduated to the middle in1991, took charge of his first Premiership match two years later and made it to the international referees' list in 1996.The same year, he officiated at the UEFA European Under-16 Championship in Austria before going on to the FACharity Shield between Arsenal FC and Manchester United FC in 1998.

He took charge of two matches at UEFA EURO 2000™ in Belgium and the Netherlands - having refereed the secondleg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid CF and FC Bayern München in May 2000 - andhas regularly officiated at the highest levels in continental and domestic competition ever since, not least the last FACup final at the old Wembley Stadium between Chelsea FC and Aston Villa FC in May 2000. Poll also oversaw theLeague Cup showpiece between Blackburn Rovers FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC in 2002 before being selected forthat summer's FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan.

A familiar face around the world, Poll has had the honour of officiating in club matches in places as far-flung as Jamaicato the Middle East. Other notable games include a Unite against Racism friendly played in Moscow in June 2003 andthe World Cup play-off between Bahrain and Uzbekistan in October 2005. A more recent foray beyond this continentsaw him referee Al Ittihad's 1-0 victory against Al Ahly at the 2005 FIFA Club World Cup in Tokyo.

By that time, Poll had already taken charge of the 2004/05 UEFA Cup final, won by PFC CSKA Moskva at SportingClube de Portugal's home stadium in Lisbon, and 12 months later he earned his second World Cup call. Poll officiatedthree matches at the finals in Germany before announcing his international retirement. At club level he was back forMatchday 2 of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League as Real Madrid CF won 5-1 against FC Dynamo Kyiv beforetravelling to Athens for AS Roma's 1-0 win at Olympiacos CFP on Matchday 3.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list willbe reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubsfrom within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the clubfor two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eightin 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubsfrom simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given agreater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as aconsequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is€750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contractsconcluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe'spremier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA tocover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream inexcess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per centof the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to theclubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m fromTV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of€2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive€2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions Leaguewinners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive,at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by theclubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two orone – participating from a given association.
