Warm Up Exercise

Three volunteers to answer a question

What is your “dream job title” 15 years from now?

Three first year MBA volunteers to answer the same question and then a “follow up” question;

What is your dream job title upon graduation and with what company?

Some facts

Majority of MBA students seeking a career change;

Three years after graduation, majority of class will have changed jobs…

Question for consideration

Is there too much emphasis in the MBA classrooms in preparing students for the job they MAY have 10-15 years later? What about the discussions about the jobs you will almost certainly have upon graduation?

For the comon human being, achieving his or her leadership potential takes time, training and preparation…

” There are no shortcuts to preparing for leadership. The accretion of layers of skill takes time. Polishing one’s gifts requires the tumbling of experience and the gift of great discipline.” Max De Pree

“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.”

(Luke 2:52)

First choose your DESTINATION…

Choose a career you can “fall in love” with. There is no leadership without passion;

Consider the lifestyle implications of your career choices carefully and in every step of the way;

Pick your role models and mentors as early as you can;

Consider the compensation implications of your choices and live accordingly.

The importance of “falling into the right place”…

3 “...Behold, a sower went forth to sow;4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side...5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.”

(Matthew 13:3 - 8)

Q & A Time!

ACELERAR PARA SER MÁS LÍDERES

Leadership: a “commodity” in short supply…

”After conducting 14 formal studies and more than a thousand interviews, directly observing dozens of executives, I am completely convinced that most organizations today lack the leadership they need. And the shortfall is often large. I am not talking about a deficit of 10%, but of 200%, 400% or more in positions up and down the hierarchy.”

John P. Kotter

It starts with “knowing yourself”…

”The first basic ingredient of leadership is a guiding vision. The leader has a clear idea of what he or she wants to do – personally and professionally – and the strength to persist in the face of setbacks…unless you know where you are going, and why, you cannot possibly get there…

“Know yourself” was the inscription over the Oracle at Delphi. And is still the most difficult task any of us faces.” Warren Bennis,

“On becoming a Leader”

Passion is a vital ingredient…

” In part, leadership is passion. It is a passion for what we do, and it is a contagious passion.”

Warren Bennis,“On becoming a Leader”

”The second basic ingredient of leadership is passion – the underlying passion for the promises of life, combined with a very particular passion for a vocation, a profession, a course of action. The leader loves what he or she does and loves doing it.”

Jay Conger

Role models will help you achieve your potential much faster…

” The rules of business aren’t like writing a term paper in college. Plagiarism isn’t a guaranteed F or expulsion; it’s a best practice. Copying successful people and their ideas, emulating them, and improving upon them is a strategy we shouldn’t be embarrassed about ” John H. Meyers,

President and CEO, GE Asset Management

”Every leader needs someone with whom he can let down his hair, confide, complain, and discuss his worst fears and greatest successes.

This may be a spouse, a friend, or a colleague, but it is unquestionable that a leader is stronger with the support of someone brave enough to tell him when he gets it wrong and praise him when he gets it right. For Churchill it was his wife, Clementine, who fulfilled this role”

Celia Sandys,“We shall not fail, the inspiring

leadership of Winston Churchill”

Learn as much as you can in your first career years…and then never stop learning!

” I’ve been in business 36 years. I’ve learned a lot – and most of it doesn’t apply anymore.”

Charles Exley, Chairman, NCR Corporation

” Leadership is learning. Whatever else leaders do, their primary role is to keep learning and to facilitate the learning of those around them.”

John Storey, “Leadership in Organizations”

” When I stop learning something new, and start talking about the past versus the future, I will go.”

Jack Welch

Forced performance curves are an old habit…you are rewarded if you do better than others…

“Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.”

(Matthew 25:28 - 29)

Never hesitate to do the “right thing”

” Effective leadership is a by product of having and demonstrating the right attitudes. The timeless characteristics of honesty, integrity, and accountability are what inspire people to trust and follow their leader – not because that person is their boss.” Keith Harrel,

“The attitude of Leadership”

” Why would you follow somebody around the corner? Or up a hill? Or into a dark room? The reason is trust.

Colin Powell

” Integrity is the basis of trust, which is not as much an ingredient of leadership as it is a product. It is the one quality that cannot be acquired, but must be earned…without it the leader can’t function.”

Warren Bennis

Always well groomed – hair cut, clean, shaved;

Adequate and polite language, no excessive volume or laughing, no bubble gums;

Good table manners;

Good and interested listener;

You cannot hide for too long the type of “gentleman” you really are on your daly life.
